I am a 17 year old girl, and most definitely pro-choice. I've seen it happen, and how nasty people can be to others considering the option. What often frustrates me is that the teenage girl/woman suffers much more than the male.
You may have ethical ideals, or unique perceptions regarding morality, but I highly doubt that you have done much or gone out of your way to make the world a better place. Consequently, this righteous indignation that I seem from "Pro-Life" people is highly misogynistic and unbelievably hypocritical.
One misconception: Women should have used a condom, they weren't safe and they should just deal with it.
This is not true. Studies have repeatedly shown that over half of women who want to have abortions have used contraceptives, and it occurs due to contraceptive failure (pills don't work, condom doesn't work, etc). The Guttmacher report comes to mind as a more recent one, but I can find additional evidence if you guys challenge it.
So, bear in mind that OVER HALF of the women who are engaging in sexual intercourse DO NOT WANT or CANNOT support a baby, and are using methods to prevent this.
I think it's fair to say that women or young teens who are raped should NOT be forced to have the baby. It's ridiculous for ANYONE to say otherwise... Seriously?
Some pregnancies cause severe physical or mental conditions that endanger a woman's health OR serious birth defects become known, so after a few weeks (vast majority of abortions occur within first 11 weeks) the option should be taken. Don't tell me that a life is a life, babies are a collection of cells at this point, barely sentient. If you're obsessing over THIS, then you had better be a vegetarian and extend the same kindness to chickens, lobsters, cats, dogs, etc.
You people assume an actual baby is being aborted. It is a jumble of cells, and first trimester abortion is utilized the majority of the time. 70.9% of later abortions occur because mothers did not have the tools (too poor, idk) to realize that they were pregnant. I agree that aborting a baby a few weeks before it is due is ridiculous, and the mothers should be punished, but oftentimes the daughter of highly conservative, awful parents does it in private, and has to wait. The lazy, lackadaisical mother should be punished, but again, this RARELY occurs.
Teens who are pregnant should not have their lives ruined, and are invariably forced to shoulder the child alone, while the dumb guy just runs away. Abortion is not a cowardly escape. It takes courage to have an abortion, and can be heart-wrenching for a young woman.
Sure, you will find unreasonable stories on one side or another, but I feel that despite the clear reasons for abortion (and as you can see, girls can get abortion in EVERY state, since 1973, including illegally. Those who oppose abortion are in a SMALL, but vocal minority. As time wears on, the issue will become clearer and clearer, and more people will have the correct opinion.
I understand that you may have a set of beliefs based on how you were raised, your parents, your religion, and other things like that, but in the face of logic it is academically dishonest to not change one's opinion if there is no adequate response. Pig-headed-obstinacy will never be swayed, but there are many intelligent people out there who are mature enough to change their opinions on such an issue when they are proved wrong.
