Plot This is an interesting one. If you try to leave your room at first, your Mom stops you. So much for staking out Oak's lab and getting the first pick. Ha! The first thing you do in this game is get in your pyjamas and go to sleep. If you pick girl, your character will morph into Ash Ketchum when the PJs go on, but your trainer card will still have a girl on it. Then you start dreaming about a certain trio of Pokémon and when it is time to wake up you are already late for your appointment with Professor Oak. You go to his lab in your PJs and he makes you check all the Poke balls on the counter before he tells you all the Pokémon are gone. Thank you science! Luckily (or is it my destiny?), there is one Pokémon left, but this one is a little hard to handle. Enter electric mouse! Then Oak talks your ear off for a minute, you leave and your Mom stops you on your way out and gives you a few things. Then PJ mode is over for the rest of the game I presume. When you decide to leave town, Pikachu will refuse to battle with a pigeon Pokémon. If you try to talk to him, a sparrow Pokémon will attack him. After Pikachu defeats the sparrow, four more will block your path back to Pallet Town. The only place you can go that is not tall grass is jumping in the water. When you come out the other side, a girl approaches you and acts like you somehow disturbed her fishing spot. Then you take her bike (and morph back to girl if you picked that) and flee the scene of the crime. Then you get into another spear-type incident. Pikachu comes to your defence. Zap! Right after that, the Ho-oh looks nice as it makes its way across the game screen. On your way into the next city, a police officer stops and questions you. She said my Pokémon was in bad shape even though he did not have a scratch on him. Then she takes you to the Pokémon center in town. Upon entering the center, the girl from earlier finds you and vows vengeance. As you try to leave, Jesse and James Team Rocket ambush you. The snake goes down in about three hits to a level 5 Pikachu. It is the same for the bag of poison. After the battle, Team Rocket will disappear and the center returns to normal. You can also call home with the phones in the corner and talk to your Mom for a bit. Then you can receive a call from Professor Oak. There are Rockets guarding the Gym door. Now there is a sure sign the Gym leader is Boss Rocket. Graphics changes Your character, if you pick boy as I did, is the spitting image of Ash Ketchum of Pallet Town. He even has a PJ mode. Most of the exploration realm has changed from Pokémon Fire Red. Pallet Town is much bigger. You can now explore the fully complete Pokémon sanctuary in Oak's backyard, the upper half of which is part of Route 1. You can also go to the houses of the two Pallet Town trainers who left the same day as Ash and Gary. They even have names. The hacker entirely redesigned Route 1 to fit the bike stealing and Pikachu rescue scenario. The Pokémon centers take their model after the television appearances on the outside. Route 22 looks the same, except there is no guard at the Pokémon League front gate so you can explore up to the water until you know how to SURF outside battle. Viridian City itself is a creative redefining of meagre proportions. Viridian Forest is more like the actual maze they say it is with turns that can lead you nowhere. If you see a cabin, you have gone in the right direction. The museum in Pewter City is gone. You can meet all nine of Brock's siblings now. They all have names too. Mount Moon is now a completely different cave than the one experienced Pokémon players know. New characters along the way have fresh new dialog to spout off. Occasionally the shading of the character’s surroundings will change. That is apparently the night and day shift as far as I can tell. Difficulties All of the cocoons have damaging attacks now. Watch out for the one that stings. Butterfree learns Sleep Powder instead of Confusion right after evolution. The first gym leader Brock must be defeated twice. Something tells me that the game programmer was following the Anime cartoon a little too well for the good of the game. There is a glitch where if you teleport back to Viridian City and go back to Pewter City through Viridian forest, Team Rocket will appear again and if you talk to them this time they will freeze you on the spot until you return to your last save point. Due to a glitch at the mouth of Mount Moon, you cannot go through it from Pewter City again once you have reached Cerulean City. So to summarize those last two points, do not bother using teleport outside of battle if you wish to make any progress at all. Sounds The sounds are all the same, except for the Pokémon League front gate building. The musical theme for it seems to be Viridian Forest. Depth I can really tell the game designer went all the way with this one. There are sure to be many more surprises to come. Maybe they will not be so surprising if I read brief notes on the Anime. That is only if you like to be prepared which I usually do. Addictiveness I will play this game again. Probably a lot because it is Labour Day weekend. I could possibly spend ten hours a day just on this game. Summary There are multitudes of modifications that make this hack much different from Pokémon Fire Red, but also better in some spots. It is a very enjoyable game as long as you do not trap yourself with the game ending Teleport glitch. Please let me know what you make of this game. Plot This is an interesting one. Graphical Changes In Pallet town, the Xanadu nursery was not there in previous versions. You can get to it by using CUT. Oak has a backyard with a few Pokémon in it. Route 1 extends into a second route. There is a raining thunderstorm on route 2. It also rains when you are in battle. Misty is fishing on route 2. Ho-oh makes an appearance. The Pokémon League guard stands outside instead of in. There is a house in the north end of Viridian Forest. The layout of MT Moon has changed considerably. That blabbermouth who tells everyone how to win is gone from the gyms. That is good riddance! The hack programmer modified many other routes to mirror the Pokémon Television Anime story. Storyline modifications Oh, no! Something has gone very wrong in Pallet Town. I am late for the selection of my starter Pokémon! Beginners who did not sleep through their alarm have already pocketed the turtle, salamander and dinosaur monsters. Not to worry. I get the cutest Pokémon from the first generation. I make sure to ask the assistant person for some Poke balls on my way out the door. Look out! There is a rival trainer staring me down at six O'clock. Wait, I have a type advantage. Sweet! I had to talk to my mommy before leaving town. She gave me some running sneakers and told to me change my underwear. Yeah right! I am a Pokémon trainer now. I do not have that kind of time. I am busy fending off random sparrows on Meta steroids at route 2. Somehow, I already have a Pokedex. After fending off a few scary birdies, I find a Misty-rious girl and upon talking to her find myself on a bicycle. She says to give it back, but somehow I cannot. I soldier on. I zap one more “Captain Jack” bird and then see a Ho-oh flap across the screen. There is a nice person waiting to take me to a Pokémon center so I can heal my new pocket monsters. Whew! I go back to the girl and she says it is okay that I took her bike. (Now, there is a great message about stealing.) She gives me an Old Rod after we battle. I try to advance from Viridian and Officer Smarty Pants says I need ID. I head back to Pallet Town. I guess I forgot to ask the other aide for a Pokedex. I did not expect a trainer to appear a few steps after the Officer checked my Pokedex, so bear that surprise in mind. Jessie and James Team Rocket ambushed me in the forest ahead. They go down quicker than a taser victim. Bug Catcher Samurai waits by his house so I challenge him and win and get repel from him. There is a trainer with a bulbous dinosaur and a flaming salamander in the forest. He is tough to beat. When I reach Pewter City, a man named Flint tells me the story of Gym Leader Brock's life and directs me to a place where I can get a power up for the gym battle. I go there and I receive a light ball from a chrome-domed dude. The plot point where the boy stops me from leaving town is gone. All the trainers from route 4 have vamoosed. Instead of all that, a Team Rocket Grunt simply bars my entrance to a closely placed Mount Moon. I get to check out Brock's house with 5/9ths of his siblings inside. The gym trainer that battles you before Brock is his brother. He uses the Pokémon Brock got after leaving Pewter in the Pokémon Television Anime. I guess that makes sense. After tearing Brock a new one, I talk to Flint again. Brock comes up behind me and talks to Flint as if I am not even there. Wait, hey! I thought they looked alike. Flint just revealed he is Brock’s papa. They disappear together. What is that yellow thing on the ground? In MT. Moon, Seymour the scientist disturbs by a colony of bats. I rescue him and he hands me a moonstone. In the cave, I battle Jess, Jim and their little p**** cat again. (90 minutes into game at this point; maybe this is an easy game, but I am having fun!) A non-descr Upon entering Cerulean City limits, I have a nice battle with my rival. There is a Hidden Village just west of Cerulean so I jump off the bridge and get to it. I just realized there are no trainers on the bridge. I cannot win a nugget. At every turn, Pokémon breeders battle me in the Hidden Village. The last breeder just gives me a Pokémon with a green bulb on its back. I guess I am ready to take on Cerulean gym. Before starting on the trainers inside the gym, I must beat the red head one outside. The gym itself is set up like a swimming pool. I face all three of Misty's sisters before battling her. That is as far as I have gotten so far. I am sure there are many more changes to the story after this. This is quite an exciting adventure. Difficulties The prices at the Poke marts are outrageous. That makes it twice as hard to raise money for the necessity of Poke balls. Many antidotes are a good idea for Viridian Forest. Keep in mind that as you advance you may not be able to get back as easily as you left. Depth I can tell the hacker went to great trouble to get every single plot point right and put the same Pokémon Ash Ketchum encounters where he found them in the show. Ash does not catch many Pokémon in the first season, but I can catch as many as I please. Addictive Qualities I will likely play many times. The story and surprises waiting for me are sure to delight all Pokémon fans. Ash's Quest is bound to be a very popular version and a big credit to this site. I liked this review very much. They may well be too many grammatical errors to count, but I enjoyed reading your introduction and I can tell you really thought this one through. The analysis seems quite thorough and you made an effort to engage first time Pokémon players. The reader becomes smarter for having read it. You have written a substantial, intelligent piece. I salute you! -------------------- |

legacyme3 : I really just made that the title to be cool and relevant to my review. Sorry to disappoint you. I suppose I could review a wrestling game, but I've played them before and they don't really engage the analytical part of my brain.
mike345 : Thank you so much. I actually had a glitch happen to me right after you posted. I was buying up a bunch of Poke Mart stuff and when I finished buying my character froze. The music was still playing and other characters were still moving so I just loaded my last save file and continued playing. I'm having so much fun, nothing can stop me now. mike345 : Thank you so much. I actually had a glitch happen to me right after you posted. GRAPHICS and SOUND The scenery and introduction of this hack are quite different from Pokémon Ruby. After you start playing, you see Professor Birch as usual, but the silhouette of a Charmeleon pops out of his Poke Ball instead of the Lotad. The moving truck you so cruelly had to ride in the back of is really a copy of Mr. Briney’s boat on the outside. If you pick a girl character, it is still a moving truck. The girl who I will call “May” has hair that changes color as she walks. Once you are in your house, (and if you pick a boy character) you will notice the Pokémon workers are now a Team Aqua member and a moving truck. They still sound like Pokémon, but if you talk to the T.A. Member (or lower Machoke in May’s adventure), he will curse profanely about how heavy his load is. Every time you step into the outside of your new hometown, it will snow and then stop right away. The ground is a blanket of white as are the trees. It could just be frost, hence Pokémon “Frosty”. Get used to this because frost, rain and various levels of snowing are a dominant theme throughout the game. The townspeople are different looking. Professor Birch’s aide is a Magnemite that talks. The person who stops you from leaving town is a Team Aqua grunt. There is what looks like staircases on the first two routes that help you avoid the grass. I quickly learned why I should avoid the grass on the first three routes. (I will give you more on that later.) The sounds and music are usual for the Hoenn region games. The imagery and dialog seem bizarre, yet somehow still enjoyable. I still like the way my character morphs into a little person with a cape when he runs. The bike helmet is not too shabby either. Note: As you catch more Pokemon and fill up your box, you will notice some are slightly discolored when in the box. STORY Moreover, on dialog, Professor Birch now calls his laboratory a “tunnel“. The first television broadcast your character sees returns to a show called “The Many Assassinations of Barney”. The T.A. Grunt that bars you from escaping town initially says that Pokémon will violate you if you go into the grass. So far, so good. When you talk to your rival for the first time, it is the same as normal if he is a boy. If it is a girl, she is viewing some unseen (thankfully) “adult material” and talking to herself about it at first. Then as usual May acts surprised, but then swears, introduces herself and offers her “services” to you as long you don’t tell Professor Birch about her leisure time “activities”. Then she briefly mentions snuggling and excuses herself to do STUFF. Yes, in bold type. Have I mentioned I like this story? You pick from Charmander, Squirtle and Bulbasaur. I usually pick Bulbasaur. The second town has a hidden compartment that you can enter. The rest of the early game goes off without any major change. DIFFICULTY The game is easier in some respects. There is a strong temptation to use dirt cheap Master Balls and Rare Candies to catch level 50 Pokémon and level them up right to the maximum. What fun would that be though? I now know what I would do with veritably unlimited Rare Candies. I’d use them only sparingly for Pokémon that are weaker than is manageable for steady game play and ones like Abra and Magikarp that don’t have attacks to effectively defend themselves in battle. The level 50 monsters on the first three routes are not the kind I like to own. They have already forgotten the level up attacks I really want them to have. I did not catch them in my most recent save file. I prefer to take my time and raise my team normally. The Master Balls for sale are always a big plus. I do not have to spend a ton of time catching a good team. I can just throw a purple ball and have it done. Many other good items are also cheaper than spit. That includes the Mach Bike. Hooray! The route trainers are lined up in nice little rows for you to challenge whenever you please. The gym trainers are easier to get at. The third route tall grass is shaped in the word “COOL” so it is easier to avoid. I suggest learning CUT before challenging the group of trainers on route 116 because accidents do happen. You may find yourself in a situation where you have to CUT your way out. ADDICTED? I am. This hacked version of Pokémon Ruby adds so much adventure to the fold that I will probably see this one through to the end. I will maybe log 100 to 200 more plays on this game alone. That is somewhat normal in today’s world. With video game culture so prevalent, who isn't a gamer? Can I get a Hoothoot? (Maybe not in this game.) That is right! I just made a Pokémon double entendre. Ha! DEPTH As I explained earlier, this game has as much depth and difficulties as you want it to have. You need only resist the urge to make it too easy for yourself and you will have hour after hour of entertainment. The Pokedex seems to keep up with to reorganized wild Pokémon supply. You can find Pelipper and Wingull by running over water on the fifth route. Yay! OVERALL I would say you should try it. The worst that could happen is perhaps losing control and going on a Rare Candy feeding frenzy. Then you might have a bunch of high-level brutes that will not obey you. Does that sound like fun or is my way better? Either way, I believe the choice on that issue is an improvement on the game. Let me know what you think. -------------------- |

I believe every reckoning of each game can be as fun as you want it to be. I myself have a strong preference for Pokémon games, but Mario can be an equally fun game depending on how you look at it.
As a character, Mario is super cool! Games with his face in them are very enjoyable. If you just look at the bulbous nose and black mustache, you know you're in for a good time. As I type this, the vote count seems as split on it as I am. Nintendo forever!!! As a character, Mario is super cool! Games with his face in them are very enjoyable. STORY It seems about the same as Pokémon Fire Red and Pokémon Leaf Green except for minor details. The man right outside Oak’s laboratory was modified to say some of the same things the Lapras donor in Silph Co. Says. He will ask if you want Bulbasaur. If you say no, he will ask again next time you talk to him. I suggest taking him up on his offer as you will then be able to beat Brock right away and pound Misty easily by letting it evolve to Ivysaur. As you head out of Pallet Town, Professor Oak will stop you as usual and then shift to battle mode like in Pokémon Yellow. He will be the old man who shows you how to catch Pokémon in Viridian City when in battle mode. After he catches a Weedle, he will revert to the Pokémon Professor and bring you back to the lab to do the whole Pokémon Yellow song and dance where he says you can have the Eevee. His grandson says “No way! This one is mine!” Professor Oak then gives you a Pikachu he caught when you were not looking. Your rival battles you. This battle is much easier with Bulbasaur’s presence so make sure to pick it up before you try to leave town. After that, it is just straight Pokémon Fire Red. DIFFICULTY However, it will be Pokémon Fire Red with the twist of having Pikachu and Bulbasaur as your two starters. This one will be unique in that more than likely you have never before started with two Pokémon you did not have to catch yourself. Advantage: Player. It is a small advantage, but a welcome one. The challenge as with any Pokémon video game is to be ready for challenging trainers. DEPTH The creator of this hack did not go all the way and make Pikachu follow you like in Pokémon Yellow. That would be a tad difficult in the programming department. Unlike that game, you can probably evolve your Pikachu any time you like. Although I never tried it, I think Pikachu from Pokémon Yellow could learn Surf. That could be true for this one too. This game offers just a bit more than Pokémon Fire Red. ADDICTIVENESS I cannot put this game down. I have been playing sixteen hours thus far. If you could play just one Pokémon game for a year, all you would need is this one. GRAPHICS AND SOUND I just turned it on and the screen is slightly blurry. It could just be me though. As mentioned above, I spend hour after hour on the computer. There is a new Game Boy Advance effect that did not appear on Pokémon Sapphire or Pokémon Ruby. The Poke Balls shoot a few stars when you catch a Pokémon. These same graphics appear on Pokémon Fire Red and Pokémon Leaf Green. The sound quality and musical diversity is on par with all Game Boy Advance Pokémon games. Very good. IN SUMMARY Try it. You may find yourself advancing quicker with two starters rather than just one. In addition, you may not feel the need to spend hours searching in Viridian forest for a Pikachu. I have logged less than a day and already have many strong fighters on my team. If it worked for me, it should work for you too. OVERALL, I would say this is the best Pokémon game on the Game Boy Color System. Something awesome about it appeals not just to me, but all Pokémon trainers. Pokémon Topaz is a stand-alone adventure. There may be a few minor dialog mishaps, but it will not be enough to ruin your game. Do not be put off from playing Pokémon Topaz. Give it a chance and the brilliance of this unique version will reward you.
GRAPHICS You first start the game much like Pokémon Silver except your character looks like a cross between LT Surge and an old mad scientist. The hacker restructured many character images including your rival and gym leaders. As for the quality of these graphics, I would say they are on par with Pokémon Silver. SOUND I really like the music and sounds. They are a virtual carbon copy of Pokémon Silver. I have always enjoyed the music in Pokémon games so on my review it always rates a ten. The sound quality is also quite as good as Pokémon Silver is. ADDICTIVENESS I started playing Pokémon Topaz in early July. Then I started playing it every day. Something about this version of Pokémon makes every other game I own take a back seat to it. It was my July game of the month. I did not touch another game until after catching Groudon. Pokémon Topaz is now the game I think about on the way home on the bus. This terrific hack is now my prime gaming endeavour. STORY It is a little different. The starters are the Generation I selection. I picked Charmander. Squirtle or Bulbasaur probably would have worked better though. There are different "obstacle Pokémon" that block your progress until you battle them. I would suggest catching them because they are strong. The Johto gym leaders have been supplanted by Kanto ones. Misty was especially tough. It took much training to beat her. I do not know what I will find when I reach Kanto though. I will just have to keep playing. DEPTH The creator rearranged the first six towns to open up the game a bit. I rather get the feeling this is going to be another long, epic Pokémon journey complete with more surprises along the way. DIFFICULTY On one point, this one seems easier than Pokémon Silver does. That would be the Master Balls provided at every Poke mart free. It will not take such a long time to catch a Pokémon now. Catching your team is much easier, but you still have to raise them. Some rare bug Pokémon only appear during the Bug Catching Contest. You still have to use Park Balls for that. As I mentioned before, you face the Kanto leaders first. I must warn you, the gym leaders all have evolved Pokémon with super strong attacks. Be prepared or prepare to be frustrated. In summary, this game has been good to me so far. If you are in the market for a good game to while away the afternoon, I suggest trying Pokémon Topaz on for size. I will start by saying that Pokémon Rebirth might actually be funner than the official Pokémon Emerald. Previously one of a kind Pokémon that you would normally begin a game with, are now plentiful on the very first route out of Littleroot Town. You can even catch Togepi there. Basically, if it is a Professor provided Pokémon (PPP, I know, LOL) it will appear on that route. They can be a bit hard to catch though. I would advise whizzing through the trainers ranks once you get a few good Pokémon, so that you can stock up on Poke Balls. I always buy ten at a time because a minimum purchase of ten gets me a free Premier Ball. Trust me. It is so satisfying to get all the PPP's on your team. Enough about what I like, let's get into what makes the game so awesome.
DIFFICULTY While keeping the basic struggle of Pokémon Emerald intact, Pokémon Rebirth adds convenience to the layout of certain areas. Jumpable ledges have been removed in key places. This allows you speed right through that annoying maze like forest that appears in every Pokémon game. You can even get to spots that would ordinarily require cutting down a tree without needing the badge and HM for CUT. Extra passages through caves, neat new bridges crisscrossing bodies of water and little alternate routes opened up if you want to avoid trainers and face them later; these are the things that make Pokémon Rebirth a player's game. As much as it pains me, I must give this segment a nine because Rebirth is slightly more open-minded than the mother game. DEPTH This version is so much bigger all at once than other games. All avenues of travel are opened immediately. There is this Cave of Origin that I didn't even know was there in other games. I expect to find very rare Pokémon there. I have been able to catch so many brilliant Pokémon already. There is also a rearranging of the Pokémon locations so that you can encounter new species all over the map. There is even wild evolved forms that don't appear in Pokémon Emerald. It is going to take a while to get all my Pokémon battle ready so that I can strike out in all directions as the game allows. STORY Same story as Pokémon Emerald, but with ways around the basic preordained event sequence. I could send Wally back to Verdanturf and beat Wattson and the Trick Master and go back to beat Brawly and Roxanne later. I can now choose which path to take first. Sweet! ADDICTIVE Oh, yes. I am hooked. SOUND and GRAPHICS The music is splendid. That is something I have come to expect from the advance games. I didn't expect my party Pokémon to light up and dance as I sent them out. That was quite cool. Moving sprites are reserved for some of the best games. I like how Pikachu zaps to attention when he enters battle. Picture all the originals with their own little dance. The music and sounds are on par with all Pokémon advance games and the Pokémon sprites have a super extra flair to them. Not a single glitch discovered. Flawless work! When you look at how far Game Freak has come since they started developing Pokémon games for Game Boy Color, it should come as no surprise that Pokémon Crystal was so successful. It is the most well thought out of the Pokémon games for the system. It has features that have yet to be matched by any of the official Nintendo Pokémon games rented on this site. For instance, I can have as many custom Poke Balls as I want made for me. I just have to save my Apricorns. In the two prior Pokemons, the best I could do was sell my extras. Now I don't have to. There is also a new radio contest where you can win all sorts of cool prizes that aren't available in stores until later in the game. I also like catching Jigglypuff at a higher level too. Enough about the actual game; let's get into why such a great game lost so many points on my score chart.
SOUND and GRAPHICS That is it, in a nutshell. It's all the Java Boy Emulator's fault. On a Game Boy Color, the graphics and sound would be normally quite as good as other Color games. The JBE is the best though, according to the page; so that is the one I use. Most of the graphic and sound issues are triggered by just moving around. Water attacks used in battle tend to look like the screen is partially covered up by white spaces. Sometimes you hear good sounds and then they get garbled. The music seems a little different than Pokémon Silver and Pokémon Gold. Maybe they just changed the pitch. The Pokémon sprites move and blink when you check their stats or when you are starting battle against one. Only your opponent moves upon entering battle, not your Pokémon. Their signature sounds may get a little blippy. Except for these minor glitch issues, the game play runs rather well. Speaking of.... GLITCHES The Battle Tower doesn't work. Yet another good feature trumped by Java Boy. They fixed that issue in the advance games. The advance games have battle tents all over the place. Maybe the Tower would be different. I don't know. ADDICTIVE You bet your boots it is. You can have hours of fun training to beat a Gym Leader. Level up your weakest to take on second generation Team Rocket. Catch one of a kind Pokémon that can run from you at any time. So much has been packed into Pokémon Crystal. Knowing all that, if I could not play both this and the advance games, I would choose Pokémon Crystal over them. THE STORY It is the most complex story thus far in second generation Pokémon versions. You will not have noticed anything too out there after beating the fourth Gym Leader, but there are sure to be plot twists. Mount Mortar is not a darkened cave any more. That should be easier to get through. DIFFICULTY There are many new features that render this one more difficult than others. The places trainers stand have been rearranged. You have to battle them and win to get by. A certain cover Pokémon will be a much rarer sight. It is possibly harder to catch, but it has avoided me thus far. DEPTH The game world is much bigger than the original Pokémon world. This one spans Johto and eventually Kanto. It has offered me plentiful opportunities to catch Pokémon I have never seen before. It will likely take all my gaming time for the next year to finish the basic storyline alone. There are a lot of tasks that you must complete to call yourself the undisputed champ of the game. In summary, this is one of the best games on the site. Give it a try. I liked it, so why wouldn't you? Stop reading! Start playing!
