I never played Lost Vikings before in my life. I have heard about when I was little, possibly from my older brother. Though I may have seen my older brother play it before, but I don't have a clear memory. Anyways, now that I've played and completed the game, it's time to get this review started.
Story
Being a platformer, Lost Vikings doesn’t have much of a story. There are these three vikings named Erik, Baleog, and Olaf, who get captured and imprisoned on an alien ship. Eventually, the vikings do escape, but matters get worse as they end up throw into a different era. The vikings now must find their way through these eras in the hopes of finding their way back home. That is basically the entire story, you know outside of the vikings dialogue. At the beginning and end of each level, the vikings will converse with each other with the humor of an saturday morning cartoon. While the story doesn’t fare so well, the graphics fare a lot better.
Graphics
The sprites and their animations serve the game’s cartoony art style. The sprites despite having little to no details are rather nice looking. However, the backgrounds are kinda bland with no deviation in them at all during the era you’re in. The sound luckily is a little better than the visuals.
Sound
I have to say that the music in this game is actually pretty well done. Each era has its own soundtrack, which disappointing instead of it being every level. There is also lack of variety with the sound effects. However, despite that the gameplay fares much much better.
Gameplay
Now, I said that Lost Vikings is a platformer, but it’s actually more of a puzzle game. Using the abilities of the three vikings together, you have to think your way through these puzzles with the goal being to get all the vikings safely to the exit. Now, these puzzles start off easy enough but progressively more difficult, though only a few made go: “of course!”. Now each viking of their abilities for each to use solve the puzzles of the game. Erik can run fast, jump, and ram to break certain walls. Baleog can swing his sword and fire arrows to destroy enemies. FInally, Olfar can use his shield to block enemies, glide, and as an extra platform. Outside of using the vikings’ abilities to solve puzzles, there are also items. These include different colored keys, bombs, shields, fire arrows, and tomatoes. These items along with the vikings’ abilities are used to solve the many puzzles of Lost Vikings.
Lost Vikings is great game for anyone who enjoys puzzles. I’m not usually one for puzzles, but I certainly enjoyed this game. If you’re bored stiff with the puzzles in Zelda, then I highly recommend this game. I never played Lost Vikings before in my life.
