I grew up with the Genesis Sonic games but when I play them in 2014 they end up boring me because they're so easy. The only stage in any Sonic game that ever gives me trouble is the final Robotnik battle in Sonic 2.

I think if Sega had wanted a 'speed-oriented' game but still wanted it to have a little challenge, they should've made it a time-based challenge; ex. given you a very short time to beat the level, but allow you to gain extra seconds by passing checkpoints, or collecting rings, or something (similar to in a racing game). They could've also included multiple difficulties so that beginners wouldn't have a hard time, but experienced gamers would still have a challenge.

Just my two cents - if they'd taken the games in this direction then they might have aged better like the Mario platformers (plus I definitely prefer the artistic style over Mario) - today they're more of a novelty that I play once in awhile just to relive my childhood.

Sonic segas Mario. I like the changes you would make to this game. Have you ever thought of making a hack sonic? You have some great ideas and should use them. It be a game I would play. The time base was a super idea it be fun to go as fast as you can and beat the clock.

marianne26 : That doesn't make sense. Oh, and by the way, play the mach courses, it's the only thing sonic 2006 has to offer.

I think if Sega would just release a full side scrolling sonic game and just ditch the 3D sonic that absolutely no one likes, they'd have a lot more success. I know they tried this with releasing sonic 4 in episodes but why not just a full sonic game? I'd buy it for sure. Episodic games are inconvenient.

These are some good ideas for a Sonic game. I'll admit that I'm not very good at video games, but I never have much trouble with Sonic. It would be very interesting to see them release a game like the first few Sonic games, except more difficult and speed oriented.

The sonic series has gotten too easy in recent years. a great way to repair the series would be to make the games have better storylines and to make the games more challenging.

I don't think necessarily adding a time limit would "fix" Sonic. I think one of the bigger problems with some of the later Sonic games is nothing has time to mature, and be fully refined. This is going back all the way to Sonic Adventure 2, really. For some reason, Sega feels like they have to reinvent Sonic for every new game in the series. When really, the games Sonic Heroes and Sonic Lost World were okay games, and you could even argue Sonic Unleashed could be put in that category (I haven't played it, though), but none of them had a game after it that refined the game before it. After Sonic Heroes set up an interesting premise with the 3 character rotation, they quickly dumped it in order to make Sonic 06, which was dumped completely for Sonic Unleashed, which was thrown away for Sonic Colors, and so on.
I'm not suggesting they go the route of Call of Duty and the sports games, and make it a yearly affair with little change, but I believe Sonic has had some good premises, even in the 3d areas, that just need to be built upon. They do not have to reinvent the wheel every time. So, those are my two cents on Sonic. Oh, and also, don't let BigRedButton make the next Sonic game either.

There are a number of ways the Sonic games could have been better, but a fair amount of those "Ways" Will vary from person to person.

For one, I'm a Strong supporter of the Sonic Adventure Series. Even Concepts in Sonic 06, (But not the game itself. I haven't played it, so, can't judge. Even so, they had some great ideas. Of which Giving Sonic a human girlfriend was not one of them).

Since I want to get that jersey, let's start. (in a non spammy manner)

1 - Get character development right.

In Sonic 06, Silver the hedgehog appears in a ruined future with Blaze as the closest thing that he has for a family. He fights to defend the innocent, but nothing can be done Iblis continuously reforms after every defeat. He's invincible. So what happens?

Mephiles, a creature who looks like Shadow the Hedgehog offers Silver an opportunity.

A way to travel into the past and kill the person who started this calamity.

Silver takes it on, and then moves in to kill the very one who could be his ancestor.

In the process however. Silver has a change of heart and find a different way to save the future. But at a terrible sacrifice of someone meaning. . . everything to him as he comes to slowly realize his feelings rather than someone who meant little to him.

Perspective change.

Gamma also had his own developing as did Shadow.

These characters share in common the "Turn against evil" trait. But more than enough people have developed on these two and I've already made my point. Moving on.

2 - Make the games play right.

No more glitches, just good gameplay. Please. Nothing is more boring than a game where. . . .you just do stuff and it seems like it doesn't even have a reason. Like in Skyward Sword with all the fetch quests for example. Butchering the design of the overworld to match it's new purpose along with it and killing that original feel.

Sonic Generations was a great game. But I really don't mind not going fast all the time. Playing as Gamma was tones of fun. And hey, as an important character for the storyline, built the way he was, how would you expect him to play? It was great and a smooth new entry in the series for level design that fit in well with the Sonic Series. We would get to have similar gameplay in the next title, Sonic Adventure 2. Only this time we would play as the mad doctor himself! Sega shouldn't be afraid to so stuff like this every once in a while! I want it back! (Only not in a form quite so dependent on homing shots though.)

Retro Sonic gameplay was another great thing. Sidescrolling areas are nothing that I'm against. So long they aren't too overused.

I haven't ever played a sonic game that I've found boring and I've only heard of a few that played badly. These I have avoided. Though I did find Sonic Heroes a bit wide and empty at times. I did enjoy Grand metropolis though.

Oh, and multiplayer. We really need that back. It made SA2 so AWESOME!!!

And that's all I really have to say. I'd go into music, but Sega get's that right pretty much every time. (go crush 40)

Dark knight of the blackened sun. I am Sword Legion, one of many. My mask is thick, and my armor is strong. All the more necessary in a world such as this. . .

Okay... hear me out on this idea for a quick moment...

Multi-game story arc.

The first game ends with Sonic losing for once.

Maybe he wasn't fast enough, or he got hurt.

Let someone like Tails or Knuckles step up for him for a while.

Sonic has to come to terms that he won't always be the best. Make him take some time off, clear his head, recuperate, whatever...

Sonic then returns to settle the score, faith renewed because he now knows what had been done wrong the first time, rises back up as the legend he once was. Kicks some butt, and takes names.

Boom.

Much rejoicing.

Ace102 : You're exactly right! I always thought for something that's supposed to be super fast that it should be timed. I do not much about the early sonic series, as I have personally tried it but cannot seem to get into it. The one I liked was sonic colors. The design of that game was really great, I felt. And there is a timer...just not a time limit!
