A little more of an update.

I found out this morning that it's going to have to be resolved through lawyers. It definitely is a couple of the developers. They are trying all sorts of copyright stuff, and it's gonna have to go through lawyers to be resolved. We could be looking at a bit of a wait, not sure how long.

I agree, and I hate that the developers are choosing to drag this out. Obviously Mojang should win, as they own bukkit and were the ones giving the paychecks. The developers are choosing to drag this out as long as they can though. Hopefully they'll be able to get this resolved sooner than I expect.

Oooo, that really does stink. I didn't realize you were gonna have to wait, that sucks. You'll have more blocks to change the textures for, though, which will be a huge plus. You can still access 1.8 to change textures though, right? I'd assume that you wouldn't require bukkit to get those textures.

mrfe : I'd need access to the Vizzed Server because when I'm working with the textures, I like to see how they look on the Pokemon World I've been making. I can still continue work on the Pokemon World but I'll probably just hold off on the resource pack until this is all taken care of.

Ah, that makes sense. I mean, there are ways to work around it (such as building a wall and testing the texture pack stuff on it in a private world or something), but waiting makes sense as well. Hopefully you won't have to wait too long though.

Davideo7 : I did some more research, and there really isn't much to update. Craftbukkit is the actual server-side updated needed currently, as bukkit itself has been updated (based off of what I've read). However, in order to release an update for Craftbukkit (which is the only way to update the server), Mojang (and now Microsoft) need to resolve the legal issue with a few former developers. Yes, it's still the same case. Apparently, this one developer just wants to drag this out as long as he can.

Basically, the legal issue is based with a developer named Wolvereness. Here's a quote from bukkit's forum: "There is a guy called Wolvereness who contributed a lot to Bukkit when it was still seen as an indepentdent project, but since Mojang owns Bukkit now, he made a DMCA violation against Mojang for changing the code he contributed to Bukkit. (AKA they violated the copyright on his code)" That pretty much sums up what is going on.

Another quote: "Here's a summary for those that don't know what they are talking about.

Key points to start off:
•First: Wolvereness is not a part of the section of the Bukkit team which was hired by Mojang.
•Mojang have claimed that the GPL license used by CraftBukkit is invalid due to the distribution of Minecraft server files with CraftBukkit.
•Wolvereness has claimed that Mojang are violating copyright over code he authored in CraftBukkit as he committed it under GPL [EDIT: It seems his claim is largely about him not being notified of Mojang's ownership of Bukkit despite him already being a contributor].
•He has therefore submitted a DMCA takedown on CraftBukkit's downloads.
•If Wolvereness' takedown is deemed valid (there are bad consequences if it isn't), then Mojang will need to do one of the following things:◦Remove all of Wolvereness' code.
◦OR not use CraftBukkit and update it at all.
◦OR pay / otherwise convince him to withdraw it.

•The problem with this is that his code is rather crucial to the project - he has authored the 3rd most contributions out of anyone.
There are some complexities to the current situation, these being:
•Nobody is 100% sure whether the DMCA is really valid or not - however we can assume Wolvereness is very confident because there are heavy consequences for submitting an invalid one.
•Mojang are not allowed to release an updated Bukkit without making the source public.
•Nobody can download CraftBukkit [EDIT: Bukkit repo is now down too] until it is resolved.
•Even if Wolvereness' code is removed ANYONE else who has a single commit to CraftBukkit can submit a similar DMCA.
•It is also unlikely that Mojang will even try to update Bukkit before the DMCA's are entirely sorted out."

And yes, I'm ignoring words for this post.

mrfe : Well that stinks. Are there any good alternates to Craftbukkit out there? I guess that wouldn't matter though since the current plugins would no longer work.

mrfe : I might consider switching to Spigot. GriefPrevention, which is the most important plugin that we use, has just been ported to Spigot as seen here:
http://www.spigotmc.org/resources/griefprevention.1884/

I'm not too sure how hard it would be to migrate from CraftBukkit to Spigot but it's something I'll look into and consider if enough users think we should make the switch.

Davideo7 : As I mentioned before, I didn't want to post here until I got more info on spigot. I've done some research, as well as chatted with other Spigot users, and here's a bit of what I've learned.

-Spigot is not 1.8 yet, but plans to update to 1.8 by the end of the month
-Spigot is compatible with most, if not all, craftbukkit plugins
-Transferring to Spigot shouldn't cause any data loss, but back the data up just to be safe (source: a spigot user)

Davideo7 : Yep! In essence, Spigot is a minorly edited version of craftbukkit (they took craftbukkit, and personalized it. It runs craftbukkit as well, though). That means we shouldn't have to worry about anything, really. Here's their site, in case you want to read up more: spigotmc.org

mrfe : I did read a little about it over the past week. It sounds like it runs a lot better and is more efficient with CPU and RAM.

Next month I plan to host a minecraft competition where the 1st place prize will probably be $100. I'm also going to try and get users, such as djinn8345, to stream themselves playing on the server. Heck, maybe I'll even release the Pokemon Kanto Region to the public in its beta form (I really wish more progress was made on that, it really could drive in a lot of traffic).

Once we upgrade to Spigot (or update to the latest craftbukkit if that comes out sooner, which it probably wont) then we'll basically be doing a Grand Re-Opening of the server. Can't wait.

Davideo7 : Yeah, the better efficiency could also eliminate some lag, which would be fantastic in Megod and Vizzed Ville (the two most heavily populated areas). From what I've read, Spigot is also heavily supported by the developers, so if we have issues we can just talk to them.

Ooo, that'll really draw in activity. I think that having streamers stream the server will also boost activity a ton. I think the main reason that the Kanto project hasn't had a ton of progress is because of the timing out issues, but now that the server is back up we should be able to jump back into Kanto.

I'm stoked to go 1.8! That'll also bring up activity, I think.

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
