I think it comes down to what the producers want and how well the directors actually do. If the producer (say the guy whos paying for the film to be made) wants changes made to the movie which differ from the game, then its his call. The only halfway decent games -> movies I can think of right now are Iron Man and Blade.

This could have gone in Video Games or Entertainment.
