Its clobbering time. Nah only kidding today I am going to be reviewing Battletoads.

Story: 8
The story from the intro and manual of the game goes like this. Battletoad Pimple and Princess Angelica, who is a friend to the Toads, are kidnapped by the Dark Queen and her space forces. Pimple was taking the Princess back to her home planet when they were ambushed. The Dark Queen takes the captives to her home planet. She then hacks the Toads headquarters and invites them to come to her turf to free their friends. She also says they will have to beat her generals in her armies to get to her if they can. Professor T.Bird, who is the Toad's mentor helps Zitz and Rash come up with an invasion plan to rescue their friends. Now, for players who have not played Battletoads games the Toads as they are mutants who basically keep order in the alien planets. Okay, back to the story analysis. I really liked this plot I thought it was creative and a great way to introduce who the characters were in the Battletoads series. The plot has your typical damsel in distress. But you also have your fallen comrade captured too. It really looks like the makers of this game were trying to get away from were the female is the only person in danger. Also the top bad person is a woman. I cannot remember many games before this that had a female in the villain role.  Battletoads, is your typical beat them up scroll along game so it was nice they included a plot. Most beat them up games do not have a defined plot as this game does. However, the plot could have introduced how the Toads became to be. Maybe I am just a guy who likes details though. Still a nice plot for a beat them up game.

Graphics: 10
When I first played this game I was surprised on how well the graphics were. Considering this game was an 8 bit game. The graphics look like what you would find in a 16 bit game. The backgrounds are very nicely done. The waterfalls in the first world look amazing. Also the ice in the Ice world look good too. Tradewest, who made this game, really used state of the art graphics. The controls in this game are also smooth no matter which toad you are playing as the controls are smooth. The sprints are very good for a Nintendo Entertainment system game. In fact, the sprints look like a 16 bit system such as the Super Nintendo. The sprints really shine whenever the toad you are using does a combo. It is funny to see their feet or fists get really big. That took a lot of sprints to do for an 8 bit system. The game also does not lag. I thought the game might lag in the wind tunnel, but it did not. The graphics of Battle Toads really shine.

Sound: 8
The sound in this game is pretty good too. The soundtrack in this game was nicely done. My favorite world themes are the ice stage (world 4) and the first world. Those two themes really seem relaxing. I think it is ironic that they are relaxing because this game is not difficulty wise (more on that later in the review). Also how the toads sound when they are beating up bad guys is funny. The pow sound that the toads make when they do a combo, which is were their fists or feet get huge, is hilarious. The enemies the way they pop out is also a nice sound as well. Moreover, the way the wind sounds in the wind tunnel was a nice touch. The wind really sounds like a big burst of wind is guiding the player. However, they are a few negatives concerning the sound but they are minor. The first negative is some of the stage themes sound like there is a tingle to them. The second world had a tingle. Some players do not mind tingles in the music. I on the other hand do not like tingles. Also when you press pause the sound it makes can get annoying if you have to leave the game for a while. It sounds like a very loud drum to me. Thus, due to those minor negatives I did not give the sound a 9 or a 10. Still, the soundtrack in this game was good and the game had overall sound; so it still deserves a good rating.

Addictiveness and Depth: 9
Battletoads is a fun game despite what the game is infamous for, more on that later in the review,. I really had fun playing this game when it came out. I want to think this game came out in 1991 or maybe 1992. The game does have good replay value mostly because of the graphics and sound. Not to mention it is a game that challenges the player which also adds replay value. I will be honest beat them up games usually do not have a lot of depth to them. However this game is very long. There are weapons to get, health to gain by beating up the bad guys, and extra points to gain. Also what adds to the depth is how long the worlds are. Most beat them up games have short worlds in them. Battletoads does not have a short level that I am aware of in it. Even the first world is a bit long for the first world. So the player will need to spend lots of time if they plan on beating this game.

Difficulty: 10
Battletoads really shines in difficulty. In fact, this is what the game is best known for. I remember reading were game experts ranked this in the top 5 hardest games among the NES games. In addition, the same experts ranked this game in the top 10 of hardest games of all time. I would say, I agree with that. This was a pain difficulty wise. I have played difficult games before Mega Man and Mario games. I thought because I could play Mega Man and Mario decent I would do okay on this game. I was wrong this game is so difficult that I only made it to world 4. Moreover, I went on youtube to see how other video game players made it through these stages. I went back to play this game ugh I still died a lot in it. The first two stages are hard but its world 3 that the game goes from difficulty to extremely difficult. The wind tunnel world 3 was a pain to get through. The blocks they throw at you, is unbelievable it is so easy to plow into one of them. World 4 has icy conditions and there is death spike games. The death spikes are more numerous than the hardest Mega Man games I have played. The enemy placement in this game is also very tough. It is easy to find yourself battling several enemies at one time. Not to mention, they are enemies that have 1 kill attack. If some of the enemies hit you, you lose a life. Also their is  poisonous gas that is instant death, and death spikes. This is the hardest game I have ever played. I really do not mind the difficulty because it requires players to develop skills and creativity to master. But a lot of this game is also based on reflexes you have to be quick to make it out of some of the worlds of this game. In summary, Battletoads is a very hard game to master.

Overall: 9.1
Battletoads is a good game for several reasons that I have already mentioned. The graphics are very good. A lot of games in the early 1990's were starting to be marketed for the new SNES. So for this game to be released on 8 bit and have a 16 bit feel to it was really amazing. The sound was also good. The sound could have been better such as when pausing the game and a few tingles. Some players are turned off by this game's difficulty. I do not find the difficulty a turn off. However, this is a game were you can easily lose your temper over due to how hard it is. I also think having this game as a beat them up style was also nicely done. I remember playing this game a lot when I first got it. I still like to play this game to this day. One of these days I hope I eventually can get past world 4 or 5. Now, is this game in the same league as Mega Man and Mario. I would say not, but its still a good series. I gave this game a very good rating so the question is would I recommend it? This games recommendation really depends on your personality. If you are someone who loves a challenge than I would recommend this game, because you will be challenged. If you are a type of person who gets angry easy, upset easy, or stressed out easy than this game is probably not for you. Because this game will make you angry and it can cause stress. So you have been warned on this game's difficulty.
