Okay, so my boyfriend and I are planning out an MMORPG. Now, keep in mind, we aren't very far into it and won't be looking for a team until we start the design and coding stages.
- I know this is a VERY long process, and might cost quite a bit of money. But I've wanted to create an MMO for a while now, because there are some things that have been left untouched, that I believe can be doable.

Now, explanation behind the question aside, I want to know, what is it that you look for in an MMORPG? What "sells" it to you the most?

What I am looking for I still haven't found. I would like an mmorpg that looks medieval. The story for it should take its roots from european myths. It would have to have a lot of cool races and classes and a great about of character creation, I hate mmos that have very little character creation. It should have one main quest and a ton of side quests. Lots of skills would be nice. If you have like 10-20 skills that should give the player alot to do and have less chance of them getting board and giving up. 3D graphics is a must for an mmo. Alot of action and that's about all I can think of.

GenesisJunkie:  Have you ever tried RuneScape yet? There have been a lot of updates over the years, and it looks fantastic now. It is indeed a medieval-like game, with the sound track to support that claim. LOTS of side quests, and a lot of main quests too. Skills such as fishing, cooking, thieving, etc. It is 3D. However, be careful of the lag. It's pretty popular, and so it may annoy you actually quite a bit.
The game experience is a bit better, or probably, much better with a membership. I think they give a free 30-day trial when you sign up. That's what happened to me, dunno about now.

Anyways, back to the questions! I have not found many good [free] MMORPG's, especially ones that aren't a hassle to my computer.

3D graphics really enhance the game,  so it kinda is a 'must-have'. There are games that don't use 3D graphics which are somewhat popular. Adventure Quest is a 2D side scroller, and is popular because it is so easy to start playing, and is fairly easy anyways. If you don't want to do 3D graphics, 2.5D is fairly nice as well. I have played a 2.5D game called Crystal Saga, which incorporates a flat back round with 2.5D characters/sprites, which does not look bad at all.

The story is very important!! A game that doesn't keep the gamer hooked in is not going to be successful. I myself have been trying out many MMORPG's, and not many have hooked me in. I recently saw that Wizard101 and Pirate101 where very successful MMORPG's, and I tried them out. Boy...I was at a loss for words. It looks like a kiddie game, it really does. But when you play it, you are so immersed into it...the story line is pretty predictable, but the events that take place really keep you going. The story is like a book you absolutely cannot put down. The graphics on both were in my opinion, flawless. The controls were fairly easy, seeing how you don't really fight until interaction, so there's no need for hot keys and such.
A good story would be something that is always entertaining and not too hard. You don't want to come up to a boss you can never beat and is always boring. What a drab. You can also smother the game with seemingly endless side-quests, such as what RuneScape has done. It may be a little boring at times, but usually, each side-quest offers its own style...some with humor, some with action, some with even romance. Keep that dynamic inconsistency in the game, and players will be hooked, trying to guess what's next.

Difficulty is big factor as well. This part is pretty self-explanatory, and really common sense. You don't want to have a game too hard, but not too easy either. Present some pretty complex challenges here and there, and balance out with some easy quests and such. Quitting because it was legitimately too hard doesn't bode too well.

Diversity.

- Character customization
- Classes
- Quests (not always the grinding quest, or the collecting/harvesting)
- Items (weapons, armor, costumes, etc.)
- Maps (if there are multiple maps, make them very different from each other, like in Wizard/Pirate101. Adventure Quest does not follow this well however.)
- Events (special events that are on at certain times, dates, etc, should never be a drab...make em inconsistent, keep the player guessing!)

Anyway, those are the few that I can think of. It seems that the stuff I posted was advice, but those are just things I look for in a game. If you take it as advice, then great.

Good luck with your MMORPG making!

Before I can really answer this, I must ask: Are you looking to make a profit from the game? I could list some things that I looked for back when I was looking for MMOs, but some hinge on the idea of money making.

GenesisJunkie : Fail summon fix. Look at Sidewinder's post.

Make it 13+. Violent and has mild language. (Tip: Don't make it shooter) Some people like to swear, and put it as their hobby. Make it so people can chat and swear, as long as it's not the F-word. If you do that, younger people can play it and it will become more popular.

I like more action oriented type MMOs like Rusty Hearts or Tera...but seeing how those aren't doing so well, I guess I am the only one.

In an MMO, I look for some originality. (unless it's an already licensed IP like Neverwinter)
If the game does something different, not copying the basic World of Warcraft formula then I'll give it a try. Guild Wars 2 and Neverwinter have stuck to me for that exact reason.

A game that you don't have to spend your lifetime into in order to get a reasonable experience. Unfortunately, that is the case with just about any MMO of any sort nowadays.

Well, that's how companies keep people playing.
Give them levels quick really on then make it progressively longer until the last few levels take seemingly forever.
World of Warcraft had me grinding for weeks maybe over month to get from 85 to 90.

I like an MMO that doesn't let you level every 5-20 minutes, leveling should feel rewarding.I also look for MMOs that aren't based on one story, and instead lets you shape out and create your own character. So far the only MMO that has done this well is Mabinogi, but my computer has an outdated graphics card so I cant play it.

I like an MMO that's has a good story line, which keeps me interested in the game. I like when there are games that I can relate to playing when I was young (ie. SWToR really caught my attention because I am a huge Star Wars fan).

I like games that level up quickly, but gets consistently harder. At lower levels the quick leveling up makes me feel good but eventually I feel accomplished when it gets harder.

But my favorite part I look for in an MMO is other options besides main quest line. Maybe some other games and holidays to keep the game variable, anything to keep a game interesting.

I think battle mecaniques would be the thing to focus on.
Most MMORPG's have a slow yet heavy battle style which is fine but maybe something with a bit more speed and lightness could make the game fun. Battles should feel like the older Final Fantasy games where the battle animations are fast rather than what we have nowadays where we have to sit through massive swings of huge blades, epic but not fun.

Multiplayer is key. Co-op, trading items and equipment. Anything like that will make you game stand out.

Thank you everybody for the feedback! I apologize for coming back so late (and if this is a necroed thread, I super-apologize), some personal stuff came into the scene... But, I'm going to take all this into mind and try to make a great MMO!

I look for action, age limits of at least 13+, and great quests with seemingly endless levels to level up. I don't want to have to grind my levels for quests but get levels through quests and only grind to reach a higher level more quickly, not because it's necessary.

I look for the same thing I look for in regular games but just on a massive scale. I like to feel that this is my adventure, my character, and I am exploring it not with just people but with Adventures as we fight are way to the top. I like it to be action based like WOW or Star Wars. I don't really have the time anymore for MMORPG but I sure wish I did.

I like games that have lots of things to do. That can be played by anyone and is not to complicated. I play a lot of World of Warcraft but only because I have invested so much time and money into it already. I don't like the rude people and how no matter how much you complain about it nothing is ever done. There is a troll on my server that about 90% of people have blocked him because he harasses them and is very rude. He calls people names and threatens them. I know people who have actually called Blizzards people and complained and yet they still have not banned this guy. In my opinion they should contact the kids parents and get him some help. He is doing illegal things but clearly the guy needs help. The fact that he gets away with it is the exact reason why I have let my subscription run out and have no interest in renewing it any time soon. I will not give money to people that condone this sort of behavior. Sorry for my rant. But back to the point. I will only support user friendly games. Harassment and rude people is just not ok with me.

The social environment is the most important part of a game like this.  It isn't the graphics, it isn't the depth (though text-based games are better) and it isn't the character building.

It's the people that play.  There is no 'winning' a game and you're there because your friends are there.

Create that social environment and you'll do just fine.

I agree with warmaker. For me playing with other people is what makes an mmo fun. It just isn't fun when I'm by myself. But since I like playing as healers I also like for their to be a good healing class. And I want to be able to heal myself while targeting enemies. I also like to be able to level at a decent rate and I get tired with dark, serious environments, so I like it when mmorpg's have some color in them.
