Yoshi's Island is another great game devised by Nintendo. This time Mario is in diapers as an infant who falls out of the sky and into the land of Yoshi. In this edition of the Mario saga it could be argued that this is Mario's first epic adventure into a world where he must fight Bowser for the first time.

The Story
The game opens up with a nice little tune that eventually leads into the opening scenes of what happens that causes Baby Mario to fall from a stork. You find out that Magikoopa flies into the stork and grabs Baby Luigi but dropped Baby Mario into the land below. When Mario falls, he falls into the hands of Yoshi and so does the map that the stork was using. Sure enough, Yoshi decides to help Baby Mario find Baby Luigi and the stork who are being held in Bowser's Castle. This adventure takes off through many castles in search for Luigi and bring a happy ending to this story.

+2.5 -  I really liked the fact that unlike most other Mario games, they actually included a real story with this game and gave reason behind what was going on and led up to the Yoshi helping Baby Mario. I felt that this was both unique and pretty cool.

+2.5 - I really liked the fact that the story was somewhat different than the normal Bowser kidnaps Peach and Mario undergoes a long journey to save her. In this, it ultimately, expands the entire Mario saga with something unique to all other Mario games.

+2 - At the end of the game there's a scene that shows a little more to story like Super Mario World. Aren't happy endings great?

+2 - I liked the fact that your adventure led you throughout many castles and when you ran into the bosses of the world, Magikoopa would swoop in and make the bosses bigger. Also added a bit more to the story because of this.

The Graphics

I know the graphics of the first game were pretty good but I gotta say that these graphics were much more detailed. In the previous game, they were awesome cool sprites with eye catching and colorful capabilities but this time around it really went a step up. These were pushing the Super Nintendo to it's limits and showing off just how great it was.

+2.5 - I really liked these graphics compared to Super Mario World. I thought that they did a superb job on these animations and graphics. They're colorful, detailed and they really catch you. The whole scene just flows together perfectly and you couldn't have asked for anything more creative and artistic.

+2.5 - Each world was artistic in design and very creative. The worlds seemed to feel have layers which made it feel more 3 dimensional and complex. The levels are the same way and very in-depth in design. Perfection is easily the word to choose to describe the quality of work.

+2.5 - I loved the animations. Everything from Yoshi to rocks falling, eggs shooting, losing Baby Mario or even the different items. There was nothing short of eye catching. When this game came out I was just mesmerized by it.

+2.5 - Also, I really like the final boss scene. That was truly amazing and it looked not only sinister but it was just epic. There was no way I couldn't include that here.

The Sound
Music and sound effects are always a key thing that get people into the mood of playing a game. Without great music the game would just annoy you into turning it down or even off. Yoshi's Island is not like that. Whenever you turn the game on and here the music it just makes you want to hum along to it. It really helps pull you into because it's catchy.

+2.5 - Like Super Mario World, I find the songs of this game even more appealing. First off, I love the beginning Intro song. It speaks a story just by listening to it and there are no words to it. I also love the final boss song. It's absolutely epic and it really pulled out the excitement in playing the game at the end.

+2.5 - Levels are amazing. Each song for each level is a perfect representation of that level. It's well worth listening to.

+1.5 - I liked many of the sound effects but there were times that a few of them might be somewhat annoying. I never really cared for the whole Shy Guy jumping out of the pipe stuff.

+.5 - Each time Yoshi would lose or die (Unimaginable) the little noise that would go off wasn't all that great. I thought it was cool but I did find that there were a few times it would get on my nerves.
---------------------

The Depth
This game might actually be larger than Super Mario World. My reason behind this is due to the long levels and some of them took time to complete. There's tons of things to do in this game and it helps keep you playing longer. Like Super Mario World, this game is also just as good for anyone of any age. With so much to do, I'm sure you can find something you like that keeps you playing.

+2.5 - Mini-games were a huge point for me. I loved playing them in this game because they were cool and I could use the items. As an added bonus you were able to play mini-games at the end of every level for a chance to win great prizes plus those mini-games from opening a locked door where you play against Bandit were cool too.

+2.5 - Large worlds kept you playing constantly. Luckily there was no timer so you could play without fear of death because you needed more time to figure things out. I liked that the worlds were large and offered a lot within them.

+2 - I really like the items in this game. There were many different items which gave you a lot of different choices you could choose from. Unfortunately, using items during boss battles was not possible.

+2 - Boss battles were absolutely unique. This was pretty stunning actually. I liked that they were unique and offered different styles of attack. It was both creative and ingenious.

+2 - I really liked the fact that Yoshi was able to transform into different  vehicles. I thought this was weird at first but later I found this to be really cool.

-.5 - I felt that the game was lacking enemies. It seemed like Shy Guys were the main enemy you'd encounter throughout the game and they were creative in how you fought the different Shy Guys but it was lacking creativity in number of different enemies. This was disappointing.
-------------------------

The Difficulty

Like the last game, this game is at a good level of difficulty for anyone to play. I remember playing and beating this game as a child but it was no easy accomplishment. The one thing about this is that you will probably die a lot and it is expected to die. Rushing too far ahead is probably the number 1 cause of death in this game.

+2.5 - I really liked that the bosses weren't too easy but they weren't too hard either. There were times that you'd accidentally end up dead and there was nothing you could do about it.

+2 - Final Boss is slightly challenging but it definitely could have been harder. I liked the boss fight but 1 small mistake and it's all over.

+1.5 - You will need to travel around each level in search of the flowers and red coins. This takes time and really opens the entire game. Levels are already large so some levels will really use this.

+1.5 - There are some cool puzzles throughout the game that require a little bit of thinking to figure out.

+.5 - Most of the enemies never posed any real threat. For the most part they are slow and just kind of hanging out. Maybe if they were a little more aggressive that would have been cool.

The Addictiveness

The cool thing about this game is that you can play a lot of the same parts of the game over and over again. It doesn't get old. Mini-games are also cool and would help keep you coming back and playing more and more.

+2.5 - Between the game's graphics, sounds and all these all appeal to the gamer and would give you a good reason to come back and play the game again.

+2.5 - The mini games are addicting. I found myself coming back to the game quite a lot to play the different mini-games. I thought that they were cool and I couldn't get away from them.

+2 - Like the previous game I would turn the game on to listen to more
music. I couldn't help myself because I was young and well I needed
something more to do.

Overall
Overall, I think that Yoshi's Island is a really great game for the adventure. It has great fun mini-games in large worlds that will take time to play and fully complete. Each world is unique and keeps the game entertaining and enjoyable. The sound and graphics really keep the game up but the game isn't necessarily as addictive as Super Mario World. I could see people playing the game once, twice maybe a few times, but it's not something that people would keep coming back to. I could see more people returning to play Super Mario World because it has shorter levels and is more competitive. There are some improvements that could be made to this game, but overall it is a great game and in some aspects offers more than Super Mario World. In other aspects, it doesn't offer as much. It's fun and worth playing, that's for sure.

I LOVE this game, with all of my heart. Its just so kiddy and in a fun way. Yeah, its pretty child-friendly, but the gameplay fun is pretty cool, and it brings out the best in the game.

Also, great review, Fire. Well done.
