So this is something that I've always been curious about... I've heard of Christians who are of the belief that any illness can be cured through prayer. That if you just pray to God (or enough people pray to him), he will cure whatever the ailment is.

Now that part is probably normal as far as Christian beliefs go... but I've also heard of people who take it to the extreme that this should replace doctors and healthcare. That when people are sick, they refuse any kind of medicines or other humans trying to figure out what's wrong with them and possibly cure them. They believe only God can actually heal them and reject modern medicine.

Are any of the members of this board of that belief or know anyone who is? If so, what's the harm in being treated by medical professionals that dedicate their lives to trying to figure out how to cure illness?

If not, what do you think of people who take the idea of prayer-based healing to this extreme?

Crazy Li : I have met a few who take it to this extreme they say science therefore medicine is of the devil or demonic in nature and if god wants you healed he will do it...

a little too extreme in my view but I have seen some amazing healings that god has done untreatable cancer shrinking and even going into remission , damaged back being healed and depression cured to name a few.

The biblical basis is obvious Jesus heals lepers, Blind,Paralyzed and even dead people and the faith in these people is amazing.

Crazy Li: I would have to say they are wrong. I would highly doubt God would automatically heal you as you are praying. It doesn't happen very often. I also think that medicine is something God let us discover.

The power of prayer rests on your faith (as far as my opinion). There are scriptures that say for example: "For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them." (Matthew 18:20) which implies there is power in prayer between 2 or more believers, if you look at it that way. However, I believe, in addition to that, it will be answered according to God's will and not ours...

As fa as replacing the healing of doctors, I think God put them here to do his work - He does use vessels (us) for his plans.

I think that going with the idea that God gives certain people the ability to find cures and heal people is a good way to look at it. Just because God can cure someone (if you believe in that), doesn't mean he's just going to make it magically happen. You usually have to do something yourself (take something, see a doctor, etc) for you to receive that healing.

I mean if you're of the belief that God can give people talents in the first place, why not the talent to work with medical treatments?

Also I used to hear the phrase a lot: "God will only help those who help themselves." Basically, you have to be willing to make some kind of effort yourself for help to received. You can't just sit around waiting for it to miraculously happen.

There's nothing wrong with the idea of praying that whatever the doctors do works (because pretty much no treatment has a 100% success rate), but you need to see those doctors in the first place still.

That's my take anyway.

There is a pretty well-known story (with some variation) that might illustrate the point:

"Once upon a time there was a man that lived by the river. He heard a radio report that the river was going to rush up and flood the town. The report said that the whole town should evacuate immediately. But the man said, "I'm religious, I pray. God loves me. God will save me." But the waters began to rise. A man in a rowing boat came along and he shouted. 'Hey! Hey you! You up there. The town is flooding. I can take you to safety.' But the man shouted back: "I'm religious, I pray. God loves me. God will save me." A helicopter came hovering overhead. A guy with a megaphone shouted. 'Hey! You there! The town is fully flooded. Let me drop down a ladder and I will help you to safety.' But the men shouted back that he was religious, that he prayed, that God loved him and that God would take him to safety. The man then drowned. When he got to the pearly gates of St Peter, he demanded an audience with God. 'Lord,' he said, 'I'm a religious man, I pray. I thought you loved me. Why did this happen?' God said, 'I sent you a radio report, a helicopter, and a guy in a rowing boat. What on earth are you doing here?'"

God gives us the privilege to pray to Him, whether if it is a request or seeking help, and God answers them according to His will and unconditionally ("God helps those who hep themselves" is not a biblical concept). God does heal, whether if it is unexplained or through His creation, like doctors and medical advancements. I think there is a misunderstanding that going to doctors is displaying a lack of faith in God's healing powers, which is simply not true. God can heal you in whatever means.

I had favorited this thread with the intentions of coming back and answering it, but everyone else was pretty much spot on with what I would have said anyways.  It's like of like a joke floating around somewhere about a blonde who wants to win the lottery, and keeps praying to God to win the lottery.  When the lottery is drawn and she doesn't win, she questions God why.  His answer?  "You didn't buy a lottery ticket."

God heals.... oh boy do I know that.  But you have to show faith AND you must be willing to act.  It's foolish to sit around (most of the time) and expect God to heal you when you can't be arsed to take some action yourself.  That isn't to say there AREN'T miracle healings in which someone didn't go to the doctor to receive the healing.  But you can't expect that.  It's like -expecting- my dad to hand over $1000 just because he felt like it.  There's always a chance he might, but I shouldn't depend on it.

Anyways, great question, and even greater responses.  I really can't add anything more valuable than what is already here.

My former neighbor lived to be around 94 or 97 and she claimed that she never took any medicine. She lived a good life and I believe if your heart is true and you pray to God, that anything is possible.

I do know a few people that are of this type of faith. As I understand it, it is in their belief that going to doctors and having modern medicine is having a lack in faith toward God in his ability to heal the sick. I don't believe it has anything to do with doctors or medicine being wrong, but more on the lines of having a strong faith. God can certainly heal anything and God should always come first in any endeavor, however, I feel that the talents, dedication and practices of doctors is a gift from God. That these people are given the gift of healing. Being a doctor is extremely hard work and takes dedication.

PokemonNuzlocke : I don't tend to take medicine myself either but that has nothing to do with religion. I just don't like putting strange stuff in my body that has who-knows-what side effects. The only stuff I take are things that are natural. I don't even take asprins or stuff for pain or cold medications for colds... all that does is try and make me unaware of what's wrong with me. The body feels pain for a reason and the best thing to do is to give it the opportunity to heal. If it doesn't heal on its own, you need to see a doctor. Pain medication isn't actually going to solve the problem at all, though. And cold 'remedies' also don't solve any problems. They just cover up the symptoms so you think you're no longer sick when in reality you still are. That's a bad thing because you tend to overexert yourself and take longer to recover.

I personally do not believe that such a thing is possible...at least on the surface.

I do not believe that prayer heals a person in any way. That being said, scientific studies have shown the benefits to some people with a "placebo" where as if they believe something is working it actually helps them in some way shape or form.

I will also point out that I am not always a believer that you need to take as many medications as the health industry would lead you to believe. Cutting out processed foods and eating healthier in general can do a lot for your well being. Although I do admit that this is not a total replacement for a Dr. There has to be a middle-ground.

There was a congregation around here who tried to raise up a deead person. He supposedly moved around a little bit but no go. Suppousedly they heald people from cancer and AIDS but this was too much of a task. Their leader was later outted as having... well not so good things with a fellow member, but they went pretty far.

I agree very much with Li's and (the last bit of) Jordan's last posts.  I'm not a fan of medicine myself.  In fact, if I get a headache, I'd rather sleep it off than take Tylenol.  If I have a cold, I'd rather adjust what I'm eating and take care of my body... than go to the doctor.  It's not that I have anything against the study of medicine, but that I'm weary about filling my body with chemicals.  I already have to take medicine on a daily basis for my disorder, and I hate that.  Messing with chemicals in my body does not suit well with me.

That being said, if I really have to get something done and my headache is just keeping me from it... sure, I'll take some headache medicine.  I even went to the doctor a few weeks ago for some flu medicine, because it was cheaper to pay $120 for Tamiflu, than to lose $350 for missing a day of work.

I don't think we should dismiss medicines and doctors for the sake of a faith healing, even though I think faith healings are very possible.  God puts talents into people's hands, whether they have faith in Him or not.

Like Jordan said, I think the health industry pushes medicine far too often and too frequently.  It seems must of society is drugged up now on various things, for various symptoms.... and most of the time it seems unnecessary.  (For example, how many kids are put on Ritalin that really don't need it?)  It's a little sad, but I guess they've got to get their business somehow... :/

Almost everybody I know and their cousin is taking some drug for some thing...

Jordanv78 : I assume then you are not a Christian ... as for prayer healing I for one can tell you it certainly can or maybe I should say God can if we ask and prayer is a great way to ask.

I personally have been healed from addiction to pot and alcohol as well as many headaches some of witch I tried taking pills for without relief.
and I know of many other that have been healed of Pain and sickness in Gods mighty name.

I would however add that it is a supplement  to living healthy after all out body is the temple of the lord and medical science god gave us brains for a reason

on a side note anyone have Christian take on "Alternative Medicine" a few of the churches I have attended just say if it's not from God it's from the devil.

on a side note anyone have Christian take on "Alternative Medicine" a few of the churches I have attended just say if it's not from God it's from the devil.
