Sometime within the next month or so I plan to start working on adding music to the video game pages. So if you go to Super Mario World for example, you'd be able to listen to the music of the game from that page.

The music will be hosted on youtube and the youtube videos will be embedded on the page. For the game's that have soundtracks available, I plan to make it so every song is available but there's 2 ways of going about it:

1. All of the songs for a specific game are in 1 big youtube video and you'd be able to click a song title and skip to that part of the video where that song plays (so Super Mario world for example, all of the songs for that game would be in 1 youtube video)

2. All of the songs are their own video and would be part of a playlist which would be named after the game (so the Super Mario World playlist would contain all songs from Super Mario World)

So here's where I need some opinions; which route should I take, 1 or 2?

Now the next question is, what should the youtube video be showing while the music in the background is playing? There's a few possibilities:

A. Shows the title screen
B. Shows the title screen and the track that's playing
C. Show a boxart graphic (front or front and back) and a few screenshots of game
D. Show boxart graphic, a few screenshots and the track that's playing
E. Show video gameplay of the game (of course the game wouldn't have sound effects so that the user could listen to pure music)
F. Show a slidehow of screenshots from the game
G. Other (specify what other ideas you might have)

Route 2. It's less confusing, I think (especially if you can still easily pick and choose which to play)

I'm gonna go with B. Only because the title screen is always authentic to the game. Box art can be well... look at the North American box art for Mega Man 2... I don't think that's very representative of what you're playing.

Alternatively, you can have the title screen for the title screen music... and maybe a game play screenshot for stage music (going back to Mega Man, a song of Heat Man's stage would show is stage in the shot) and so forth and so on...

Now I have a question for you: will you only be focusing on authentic, original music from the original games' OSTs... or would you entertain adding remixes of the songs at some point in time?

Crazy Li : I could add remixes in the future but for the time being I'd like to focus on just having authentic music right from the game.

Davideo7 : I would go with the second option, because I think it would be easier to find it. And I would go with E, because then you can see the kind of levels that the music goes with. Although, in some cases, F or C might be better, just to avoid spoiler alerts when it comes to secrets, bosses, and other hidden goodies.

Davideo7 : That would be epic! It is a very good idea! We should be able to put music too, but not only the moderators or staff, like we do with the screen shots.

EDIT: I prefer the option E

Take Route 2.

It's the best one, also, sounds easy to use.

Of the video's options, I think option B fits better. However, Crazy Li's suggestion isn't bad...

Currently I'm leaning toward 2 and B.

D, E and F might add too much extra work. A and B would probably be the least time consuming and that's important since I plan to have this done for every game eventually.

Yeah, I know starting with remixes would be a bad idea. I was just asking for the future. Getting ahead of myself, perhaps. But I really get into stuff like VGM, so it's easy for me to get excited and start asking questions.

I do agree that you need to establish the official versions of the music first as a basis. You can add the fancy stuff later if you so chose to.

I also agree that adding music should be staff and above capable like screen shots. This way, the staff can reduce your workload.

I say option 2. With option 1, some games have a lot of VGM that probably wouldn't fit in one video. As for what to show, I think a screenshot of the stage or the stage's boss should show in the background.

Crazy Li : Yeah, the tricky thing is finding staff who know how to extract music from games or can find good websites that have them already available.

megamanmaniac : That is true, I'm not sure what the youtube video limit size is but I know for sure a game like Final Fantasy VII would probably exceed that limit if all of the songs were on 1 video.

Davideo7 : Would it be possibly to record the VGM from the game itself then record a separate video that shows a picture of a boss or something but simultaneously records the VGM previously reorded? Also, how kind would you want the VGM? Would you want it to cycle twice or be an extended VGM?

Davideo7 : Basically I'm asking if its possible to record the music from the RGR and then rerecord the music in a different video. I'm also asking if the music should be recorded so that you hear each cycle twice or if it should be extended to 15 minutes it so per track.

Davideo7 : *raises hand*

I know how to extract music from video games. Well, some anyway... I get stuff from GB(C/A) and Sega (Genesis/32X/CD/GG/SMS) games for certain. I'm pretty sure I can do SNES as well without a problem. NES, I don't actually have a clue whether or not I can do that... though I might have some tricks to make that work anyway.

I also know how to rip music from disc-based games (particularly Sony ones), not that that's very relevant considering that's not RGR stuff.

Crazy Li : I know how to rip music from disc games as well (I found out about that many years ago when I tried putting a Playstation game into my computer to see if I could play it and had the option to rip the soundtrack lol). That is beneficial because I'd add music to games in the VGR as well.

As for the ripping of Gameboy and Sega systems, how do you go about it?

Emulators, basically. My Genesis emulator has the option to either log sound in a raw (uncompressed) .wav format or in a special genesis music format (.vgm). The latter can likely be converted to a .wav or .mp3... but I'm not sure if it would work properly if I tried it on SMS or GG games since they have a different file format for their music (.kss).

VBA also has a sound logger that would allow me to record audio to a raw WAV file.

SNES games can have their sound ripped to .spc files which should be convertible to WAV or MP3.

I would pick route 2, although route 1 does have a charm to it as well. I think route 2 would be easier to navigate through. Also, the company makes me pay a monthly fee for a certain amount of gigabytes I am allowed to download and if I exceed that limit the whole internet service is slowed down to almost nothing, so I try to keep my downloading to a minimum. So route 2 would suit me much better than route 1.

As for the video itself, I'd pick B. B is simple and I know I won't be staring at it the whole time, so a gameplay or scrrenshot video is not really needed.

I would say pick the second route, and go with B for how you run the images, though I do like the idea of showing a screen from the game that matches the music that's playing.

I am on the 2nd route bandwagon. As for the other options, I think either E or F would be the coolest. But for the pure logistics of what is really feasible, I agree that either options A or B would be the way to go. I just don't see the video or slideshow options getting applied to even close to all the games just because of how much work that entails.

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
