Before you go "lolno laws", listen. The chat room is composed of 10 or so rooms. Uniform rooms, might I add, except for different mods, greeting messages, and titles. What really makes these rooms different from general chat except the self-imposed age limit? It's stupid. Yes, yes, laws, I know this. But really, are any of the chat rooms different from the next? You have the same exact sensors on words. And while the 13+ room has more risque subjects, it's usually stupid innuendo. But the current system of chatrooms are inefficent if the age limit was created strictly to follow the law. Now, I also understand it's also used as a picket-fence for underage spam. But, seriously, there are as many idiots, trolls, flamers, spammers, that are 13 +. You also may be asking, "WHY ARE YOU COMPLAINING NOTHING GOES ON IN CHAT". We all go on this site to waste time. When I'm tired of playing games, and the forum is slow (like it usually is), I want to go on chat. "GO ASK A FRIEND" well, that could work, you know, if they didn't have other contacts in THE GENERAL ROOM. ;n; Point is- Age block seems useless when there are 10 other rooms people can go to- same as others. Only reason people use 13+ room is because it keeps out some spam, and not even wholly. (I understand people are concerned about more spam and shiz, but that could easily be countered by at least centralising it into one room and/or a more effective mod system. Votekick could work to an extent.) Other rooms are useless- no one uses them because it's not a large enough forum to warrant. (RP Room, Immature, Guest/Help. I mean, I haven't seen ONE person RP, and if they did, there's a small enough crowd to keep it in 13+.) Laws? What laws are you following? Hell, I bet a ton of 11-12 year olds are being exposed to crap worse that that. On this forum. Chat isn't the only way to see things. PM. Profile. Now, I know we could just use the other chat rooms, but no one else uses them because (I'm going out on a limb here), they think it's some metaphorical spam wall. (That's also why no one uses the mature room) The only reason that you're keeping this "law" to me is to provide some accordance to the actual law- which is purely sentimental. Plus, you're also trying to keep out spam from younger users, but that really won't help if half the other users are spammy anyways. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Vizzed doesn't require children under 13 to have parental consent in order to sign up for an account, does it? If not, then it already violates the very law that it's trying to follow, and simply preventing children from entering the chat room won't fix that. Of course there are some children who need to be kept out of the chat room, because of the "mature" content of the conversations at times. And it shouldn't be Vizzed's job to parent these kids. But rather than booting everyone who's under 13, it could be handled in a case by case basis. In the case of the OP here, I think he's "mature" enough to handle the chat room. |

Not to be a total jerk, but your numbers are way off. There are over 273,000 members. Some are re-regs or system based, so even if we shave off those there's still over 250,000 members. That's 125 times as many as what you said. Also, we have had over 1700 different users post at least once in the past 30 days. More than 8 times as many as your guess. Get it right

I was on staff when this rule was applied. Banning users under 13 from chat was discussed by the staff for a while. You really don't know how much crap was going through there before the ban was put up. 12 year olds shouldn't even be in online chat rooms anyway. Most kids who sign up are here for the videogames. We don't want to ban them from that, so there isn't an age limit to register. Some of them will post which is okay as long as they don't spam. A few might try to enter chat, but it's been a pain before so we blocked that. We also don't want to deal with angry parents who get mad at us for what people discuss in chat sometimes. BNuge : Parents may be angry, but the whole "Vizzed is family friendly" thing kind of prevents stuff from happening. Or otherwise, I've never heard of a parent complaining about Vizzed. If there was an example, I'd appreciate it. And while numbers do change the facts of the whole situation, how many of the posters are newbs that post once? And how many are inactive? While it is still much greater than my estimate (Which was foolish by the way) does this site warrant the attention of the US law often? Well, to be parents would eventually chastise people because this site has underage users. It's a normal part of having a forum like this. Which brings us back to the main point. Why are we still blocking chat if- The laws are useless when we allow underage users on the site itself. People still spam on general, and we could easily counter spam by centralizing the chat rooms and a more efficient mod system. Age doesn't determine maturity. Why should someone that is 13 be immature and get in the room? Why should someone who is 12 and is mature not be allowed in the room. Just not liking the 12 under crowd is ageism. Parents would still just chastise the site even if we block the chat room. Again, we allow underage users on. I can understand some limitations, like a mod age limit, but why block off a significant portion of the site to young patrons? Which brings us back to the main point. There have been instances where parents have complained. And Vizzed being family friendly while kids are in the chat room was practically impossible to enforce and just made the chat room miserable for everyone. I know we could just use the other chat rooms, but no one else uses them because (I'm going out on a limb here), they think it's some metaphorical spam wall. (That's also why no one uses the mature room) Missed that the first time. It's not really true. The reason no one goes into other rooms is that there's no reason to. Everyone is in general chat, and it's more fun to be where everyone else is. There was a time when mature topics had to be in the mature room, but it was tough to keep up with two chat rooms at once so most people stuck to general and just brought the mature topics in there. Well, yeah. But damn, you know, it's pretty unfair to say you're enforcing the law if you're really not. The age limit does have it's merits, but, again, you're blocking off content to a large user group. Couldn't we have some sort of test, or pass, or something? I was offering alternative ideas so hopefully the limit may be removed in the future, if more people speak against it. That last part of your post was a bit... off, if I may say so myself. Rather, I understand this won't do s***. This is the SUGGESTIONS forum. I've never seen a forum that generally listened to this forum. Also, what are these reasons? Is it because of spam or flaming or what? Many measures could be implemented to stop this. (Tests such as the newbie one, etc) This forum (usually) doesn't post any racy or other offensive things.
