Final Fantasy VII was an amazing game, no questions asked. Although not "the" best, it is one of the best RPG's out there, and I would like to share my thoughts on the main points in the storyline. I don't need to say that SPOILERS ARE HERE! If you haven't played or completed Final Fantasy VII, then do so before reading any further. Also remember this is my own opinion, and I would ask you to respect that. Beware those tl;dr readers, spoilers last until the end. As a flamboyant God once said in a video game: "Gaaah! Spoiler Alert!"

SPOILERS START HERE!!! Now, for those who have completed the game would agree that the storyline was amazing. It does leave me speechless when I try to make words for it, however, I feel there are some flaws in the ending that I want to point out and how they felt a little out of place. Before I do that though, I want to talk about probably the most discussed part of Final Fantasy VII, The death of Aerith. Yes, I'm calling her Aerith and not Aeris. If I'm not much mistaken, the word Aerith is her real name, but it is pronounced "Aeris". There were some translation problems and the "TH" got mixed with the "IS" when putting in her name. It's the same for the "Last Elixir" you found but never saw in your inventory. That was also a mistranslation on a "Megalixir". Where was I? Oh yes, the death of Aerith.

Aerith's death was a shocking and tragic part of the game, but in all honesty, it wasn't as breathtakingly tragic as I was lead to believe. I found the build up to following her to the forgotten city created a mood, and I loved how my greatest fear was "if she's alone, she'll be killed by Sephiroth." which turned out to be true, but it didn't make me cry. However, the entire thing, from when Sepiroth put his long sword in the back of Aerith's heart, to the point where Cloud placed her in the water and she sadly drifted away, was a touch of beauty. The heartbeats played marked the emptiness of our hearts when they stopped, and the White Materia slowly bounced away. The words Cloud spoke over her dead corpse were very touching and true, and the most amazing part of it was, you were thrown into a battle nearly straight away after she died.

This was quite a clever thing to do. You don't want to fight Jenova Life after Aerith died, you want to be left alone and pay your respects, take your time as you recover from the shock, but the game insisted that you fight there and then. What's more, the music played when she died is playing during the fight. This is simply beautiful. I was standing there for a full three seocnds (a long time in a ATB combat system) before using my first attack. I didn't feel any blood lust or raged at full fury at this creature, I wasn't in the mood for fighting. I just wanted to say my last goodbyes. I will agree it was all very touching and sad, and don't get me wrong, I would have loved to be able to resurrect Areith.

The thing that annoys me about this is that Aerith didn't get a whole lot of character development. There was little about her past, and the parts that were about her past, they focused mainly on her Mother in present, not on her. It would have given the whole thing more depth if they talked about what Aerith did when she was young. She claimed to have been used to danger in Midgar, so why not expand on that? What trouble did she get up to and who picked oh her, or was she picked on? What were her past experiences with the Tusks? And how was she able to grow flowers in a Mako dry area such as Midgar? (yes, it might be due to the fact she was an Ancient that made the flowers grow, but still putting that in as a flash back would have still been nice). All of these questions would have gave much more depth to the character of Aerith and would have made the blow of her death much more crushing than it already was. It was still sad to see her go.

Why? She was a load of fun to have in the team; I loved seeing what she had to say; she was a load of help in battle with her limit breaks; she was cute (let's face it guys, she was. Sure, the obvious choice would have been Tifa O-O, but I would pick Aerith any day); the love triangle between Cloud, Tifa and Aerith was fun and interesting; I liked her hair; it was great to save her from Shinra; the date in the Gold Saucer was a joy to watch; and she was cute. These things made good use of the lack of character development and in fact gave the illusion of it, which worked for a time. Aerith, I won't forget you....

The thing I want to talk about regarding the ending is most of the second disk and the end of the third disk. In disk two, stuff starts to get real as Sepiroth summons Meteor and Weapons start to protect the planet from further harm. You spend the first part of this disk chasing Sepiroth, and the second part collecting Huge Materia to get to Sepiroth. During this time, it's a race against the clock against Shinra and their top-men the Tusks to get the Huge Materia. This part of the game is so intense that you sort of forget about Sepiroth and focus everything of Shinra. As the Sister Rays fire their great blast at the barrier, you then go and finish off Shinra before the Corporation is destroyed by the blasts by a Weapon, killing Rufus in the present (I loved how he just magically disappeared in that scene with a quick cut).

At this point, you’ve been focusing so much on Shinra and the Huge Materia that you kinda forget a little about Sepiroth and his plans to become a Godly being. There is also little to be spoken of Sepiroth at this point in the game. It seems like such a bold connection. If you think about it like this, it’s just like your RPG, and the Sister Rays destroying the barrier is a trigger for you to get to the Northern Caves, but the battle between you and Shinra was so intense, it was almost more like a “race” of who can get to Sepiroth instead of trying to just kill him. But that’s fine compared to how the game ends.

At the end of the third disk, you will come to a point of no return where you go into the core of the planet. Jenova’s theme starts playing (Gee, I wonder if I to fight another Jenova later on….), and you fight through some enemies such as Iron Man (Yeah, I know, looks nothing like him T-T), and you get to the center. You fight….*sigh* another Jenova, the final one, thank Notch, and then the floor floats away and you fall though further down into the earth. What’s so bad? Nothing. This is pretty good as final battles go, however this is the point I’m going to nit-pick at. You met Sepiroth by Holy, trapped in some red vine stuff of (probably) Jenova, and he starts blasting bursts of energy at you. You get together in three different teams and start to fight Bizaro-Sepiroth.

What was missing in this scene was that Sepiroth didn’t speak a word. In fact, he doesn’t say anything in the third disk. You have been chasing him all this time, and now your fighting him. Isn’t he going to say anything like “What a pest you are” or “I can’t believe you made it this far. I’m afraid you go no further”, or “I told you not to push your luck!” or anything? Something like this could have rekindled the fury that Cloud has against Sepiroth and motivated the player to defeat him and settle the long awaited score. Cloud is just as bad; he doesn’t provoke this motivation of rekindling or anything, just talks about the memories of the planet or something.

So you enter the first fight, which has quite jammy music and is generally a good boss fight. I like this, After you defeat this, you fight “Safer-Sepiroth”, with the song “One-Winged Angel”, a terrific Latin song to be played when fighting someone as mighty as Sepiroth. There isn’t any transition to the fight. The screen is black for a couple of moments, and suddenly, the background is different and so is Sepiroth. I don’t mind a background changing into something crazy for a final fight, but I would like to see it happen. It’s like making a smooth fade from blue to red, but taking out the fade. But this annoys me further when you defeat the boss. He just sort of gently fades away into nothingness. This was the guy that burned down your home town, tried to destroy the entire earth and heartlessly killed Aerith, and this is how he dies? In a slow, unsatisfying dissolve? I don’t want to see that! I want to see him suffer in a loud explosion. All the other bosses gave a great explosive and shaky effects when they were defeated, and those gave satisfactions. This just feels empty.

After that, you are surprising at the point of no return again, and Cloud says a few things, and you start to head off home. Then Cloud hears Sepiroth laughing, there is some of that animation that made me laughs a bit, and then there is a cut scene of Cloud going through the Life Stream. At the end of it is….Gasp, it’s Sepiroth. Now you go in on a one to one fight, to settle the score, winner takes all. This feels like it was just added there for the sake of a final “final” battle. It annoys me to see that they defeated the final boss, and then they made it look like it was finished, and then just put, “you know what, they really need a one to one fight, and so let’s just put it here”. It just doesn’t flow well. Here’s what I would do to make this transition to the final “final” battle to Sepiroth.

*Safer-Sepiroth is defeated, he starts to have small explosions all around his body, parts of him break off, and then there is one final explosion ridding the screen of Safer-Sepiroth, but the real Sepiroth takes it’s place. He floats down slowly, and pushes about three party members away with sheer force. “I told you not to push your luck!” He pushes another two away with sheer. “Just give up!” And with an amazing amount of energy, he blows away the remaining party members, knocking Cloud back a little. With each surge of energy, the background slowly turns darker and darker. “Let’s finish what we started in Nimblehemi….” Now the true final fight begins.*

Doesn’t that make it more dynamic? Doesn’t it feel more structured that way? Doesn’t it feel the desire for those two to fight one on one without it feeling like it was placed there just at the last minute? Apart from that, the final battle with Cloud and Sepiroth was good. I loved the build up and the flashing and the OMG OMNISLASH! It was a good way to defeat Sepiroth. However, I felt this was short lived. They give you Clouds Level 4 Limit break nearly instantly, and the build up was too short for my liking.

You could have had them exchange attacks for a bit, you doing quite a bit less damage than he does to make it feel you aren’t strong enough to defeat Sepiroth, and then on the edge of defeat, you could use Omnislash to defeat him, and settle that age old score. I felt this almighty Sepiroth, whose power was so great you could never truly express how strong he really was, could be defeated with just one attack was rather pathetic.

So there is, me ranting about what I didn’t like and praising what I did like about the key points in the game. It doesn’t mean I hate the story line, I loved it, loved it a lot. I just felt I needed to express my feelings on these points. Do you agree with me? Do you think I’m mad? How did you feel when Aerith died? (I warned you tl;dr that there were spoilers in here to the end!)
