Are gamers ready for a subscription only console? Microsoft released in early May what they say is and experiment. The experiment was to release a $99 X-box 360 with a monthly fee to pay off the full price of the console. But are gamers ready for this if this was to become successful. Microsoft believes that they are, saying that people are already doing this with cell phones.

Retailers and I’m sure gamers are going to be keeping a close eye on this to see if it will work. If this does work we should expect this to be rolling in all retail stores with in the next 12 months. It is predicted that if this does work that the next generation of game consoles will be sold this way. Instead of consumers paying $399 all the way up to $600 for a new console. Consumers just might be paying $99 with an added “Data Plan,” which will cover the cost of just the console.

If we continue to want to the best we can get in our game consoles are we as gamers and consumers willing to add another monthly bill just to have the latest in games? Or would it be just better to give us one price and get it all paid off with one payment. I guess we will have to wait and see how well this experiment that Microsoft has started does. However, This gamer is a little afraid as rumors continue to grow on this and how games may no longer be available second hand.

Well I am kind of iffy about the new consoles, a while ago Sony was wanting to implement an idea where you buy a game place it into your console and that disk can only be played on THAT console period, that meant that if we knew each other in real life and I had a game that you wanted to try out you wouldn't be able to play that game unless you were at my home playing on my console. I'm also a little worried about Nintendo as well, with their announcement that they are going to try to make money off of "Lets Players" videos for their intelligent designs. Like Mario and Zelda. And that Nintendo has region locked their previously unlocked portable consoles, I see this as a terrible and scary thing that Microsoft is doing as they might charge interest  for doing this so instead of paying maybe 5 - 6 hundred dollars for their new console you might be shelling out upwards to 8 hundred to 1 thousand dollars for that console. And Microsoft has a terrible track record about their consoles having loads of issues for the first year or so. Not to mention that Microsoft also has a tendency to lose money on their consoles which is often made up by their other products that they sell. So all in all I would say that this might be a disguise to try to rectify their record of loosing money by racking in potential interest by the pay monthly approach.
