I decided to try my hand at drawing the smooooch meme using pokemon gijinka characters.

VIDEO UPDATED ON 6/15/2012

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FgjLUxU-Yo
(Watch it on youtube if the quality seems low)

Before you ask,

I created this using GIMP, a free layer based download on the internet, and windows movie maker 6.0. To make animations in GIMP, you simply have to draw each 'frame' and play them back as if you were making a flipbook in the real world. Each layer is a 'page' of your flipbook. Then save it as a .gif, put it into WMM, add music, and viola.

The meme is called Smooooch. It isn't as well known as say caramelldansen, but it's still pretty popular amongst memes and if you haven't seen it, google smooooch.

Yes, this takes a long time to do since I need to hand draw and color each individual frame. No, I am not using a template. All the art in the video is free-handed using a digital art tablet. I am, however, using another smooooch video as a reference.

I have been working on this for about... 2-3 days now? Already many hours have been put into this small part of the animation... and this is the easy part. I stopped right before it gets hard.

I stopped right before the (imo) most epic part of the meme because it's going to take a LOT of frames to do and I need a boat load of time to draw them.
(To put things in perspective here, that last bit, the spin? One, single, complete spin is 20 frames. Just one spin is 20 individual drawings.)

The characters featured are Glyph the Gligar (My original character) Delin the Zwelious, and Raimundo the Raichu. I only own Glyph and the other two were designed by friends of mine.

Ahem... Well as this is an work in progress...
Not to be vague, but... Wow! Two to three days... That's an crazy amount of sketches from you in such an short period of time!
Where on earth did you get the motivation from!?
Anyway... I cant think of much to say other then your skills at artwork and video compiling is nothing but impressive.(*Grooming* I feel CREEPY...)
Thanks for sharing this!

Edit : You like creepers!? Now you're scaring me! This is quite the project here... You've done pretty well so far. Best of luck.

On3On : Bring on the creeping. I love creepers.

These particular sketches aren't particularly detailed, nor shaded, so its fairly easy to spit them out one after the other.

I wanted to do my own version of smooooch after stumbling upon this one of Bakura and I'll admit, after finally finishing just the lines of Glyph running in place (just 8 frames on repeat), I wasn't sure if I wanted to finish it.... but then I played the bit I had done. That's what keeps me motivated. I want to see the final product myself. Every time I complete a new scene, I add it in and play it through, not only to make sure the timing is good and it's smooth, but it's a nice self pat on the back to watch and think 'I made this'.

Do you have any advice for creating something like this on your own for the first time? My daughter loves drawing anime characters and chibli and such and has a drawing tablet, she would dig someway to create a .gif or moving frame of some kind. Any advice would be welcomed, always looking for ways to encourage her interest.

lyssiah : Like I said in my OP, use GIMP. It is a free digital art program that can be downloaded here. If you don't want to put out the money for fancy software like flash, or photoshop, Gimp is an excellent alternative. I actually prefer it to software that costs money.

Anyway, creating gifs with GIMP is as simple as making a flip book. All you have to do is draw the pages, then save as a gif. The program will ask if you want to save it as a still image or an animation.

The best way to learn how to handle GIMP is to play around with it, however for newbie gif makers, this is the method I use to make gifs.
1.) Draw your first frame/page. Create a new layer to be your second frame/page.
2.) Set the opacity of the first frame to about 50% (Opacity can be found on the layers dock. If you accidentally exited your layers dock, you can open it again by clicking Windows->layers)
3.) on your new layer, begin drawing the next part of your animation, using the previous frame as a guide. This will help you keep the frames consistent size wise as well as help keep your animations smooth.
4.) Once you've completed your second frame, set the opacity of your first frame back to 100%, then make it invisible. Set your new frame to opacity 50%, and start drawing your 3rd frame.
5.) Rinse and repeat until completed.

EDIT: I also recommend not trying to animate spinning as your first try animating. It's harder than it looks to make it look correct and smooth. Simple memes can help new animators get their feet wet by breaking down and mimicking the frames.
Simplicity is key.

This is really cool.  I can't believe someone is able to do that in just a couple of days!  All the little gajinka Pokémon are so adorable.  Will you post updates when you make more of it?  Also, I'm unfamiliar with the Pokémon that come after Blue and Red, which one is your own character?

Khymera : Yes, of course I'll post updates ^-^ However the updates will be in the form of gifs without the music, as it would be too much of a hassle to remake and reupload the video for one new scene.

My oc is the middle one, Glyph the Gligar.

Well, I took a break from this for the past 2 days to hang out with my friends. You know, instead of sitting in front of a computer all day. But now that I've finished socializing, here's the spin part colored.

I gotta say, coloring takes forever compared to the sketching, which is saying something since I essentially sketch each movement twice. (Once as a generic base for size and continuity, then a second time as a 'clean', detailed version)

Coloring takes longer because I have to keep switching my palette. I've tried going through, coloring one color at a time on all the frames, and I've tried coloring one entire frame at a time. There are no shortcuts to coloring though.

EDIT: I wish there was a delete post option. I don't want to double post, but I want people to know I've got an update.

This is probably the most complicated scene so far, and it's not even done yet. 173 frames down...who knows how many more to go.
NOTE: This is my template layer, so I've only drawn the 'dolls' that I will later detail into the characters above.

NOTE 2: I apologize if it's hard to see. I usually put a background in when I test my gifs. It's fine when it's just 20 or 30 frames.... but 173? Not worth it. Please bear with the transparency for now.

Hawaiianbabidoll : Wow... After watching the other smooooch... You definitely chose an difficult one for yourself.
Its amazing knowing the details of how much effort it takes to make this.
The other one was hard to see, I had downloaded it to my computer and viewed it that way, it showed with an bright background, so I could see it clearly.

It looked good... 173 frames. ; Epic amount of work...
Its even more impressive how far you've got, I mean I would have thought this would have taken longer. Not that I doubted your skill...
Anyway I hope you enjoy yourself with this, it looks hard, but really satisfying.

I have updated the OP with a new, longer video. Cheers, I've reached the halfway point XD

I didn't put the background in yet for the crazy jumping part, nor did I finish drawing the end ball bit. This is partially because I was debating what I was going to do about their tails for the ball bouncing, and partially because it's 2:30 in the morning and I have plans tomorrow (today?) so I should probably be sleeping right now.

Cheers! Halfway... I'm so proud of you! *Cries*
The video just shows how well done it is, it wont be long before you'll find that you're finished...
You better enjoy your efforts, I know I am.
Anyway, thanks for this.

I apologize. Right after I hit that halfway point, I just stopped working on this, but I finally picked it back up again and updated the OP with a new video. I actually have a little more of it completed then shown, but I'm still coloring some of the frames, so I left them out.

My next update will be the completed video... As long as I don't shelve the project again. So close to the end...so....close....

Hey. I saw this thread and got curious. I read the
posts on here and everything sounds very
i
nteresting. I didn't get to see the video at the
beginning, it says that it has been removed. Would
have liked to have seen it. I saw that spinning
thing you did with those three characters. That
is some awesome stuff. I'm actually going to
down load the Gimp software you mentioned
in here and try it out. I have this character that
I've been working on for quite a while now and
would like to see him come to life. Thank you
f
or the inspiration and the tips on using the software.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
