Just as the title asks. Do emoticons really add more emotion to text? If so witch website uses the bat set of emoticons?

For me emoticons really do add more emotion to what I am writing or reading, and I think Acmlm boards in general have the best set of emoticons, they really capture the emotions just right.

pi0x : i think they help convey the writers attitude. For instance if i made a joke or something id put in a laughing/winking emoticon so you'd know i wasnt serious.

I don't think it actually gives the text 'more' emotion. At least not for me, it doesn't. What it does for me is clarify which emotion I am meaning to give. It is very easy to think a sentence in multiple ways by putting certain tones to the words. My fiancée has gotten upset at me for harmless texts because she read it in a tone that makes what I say appear attacking, condescending, sarcastic, etc. Using emoticons helps me assure that my words are received with the tone that I text them with.

I agree with rcarter2. Emoticons seem to do more to capture the proper tone-of-voice for a sentence; however, it can be used improperly just as well.

Attitude, body language, and tone of voice are lost over the internet, since it's just plain text. Adding a smiley helps others determine what you mean. Personally, I use them a lot and find them very useful. I might come off the wrong way without using them.

I like using them. They somehow enrich communications and help you understand better what's the other's attitude. Some people are just joking, but if they don't add a smiley about it, you might misunderstand it as an insult.

But sometimes, emoticons (and the body language in real life) can be deceitful, but that's a different story.

piOX it really depends on the emoticon if its a smiley face you know that person is happy or laughing but it doesn't really add emotion you just know how they feel

rcarter2 : I gotta say that is the worst. Through texting it's really annoying when people take it the wrong way, or for example when your texting a sibling and to him it might seem argumentative, or insulting, etc. But anyways I do feel they add some emotion in the sense it represents attitude whether it be jokingly, sorrowful, or just plain upset.

I use them to convey the 'mood' of the post, or how it should be interpreted. I.E., serious, sarcastic, etc.

I think they do, a smily face is sometimes the greatest thing, it can make a persons day with just one word, or it can express how you feel.

I agree with Annette....considering it's only text...smiley's and emoticons helps portray a sense of "emotion" as funny as that may sound. I use Smileys all the time whether it be on board, or texting a friend on the phone.

Overall, I thought Yahoo Messanger HAD the best smileys because they were all motioned..... until it became infested with hackers and booters. Gr! (If I knew how to make the angry smiley I would have)

I think they do to a degree. It helps to know when people are joking around or mad or whatever. I use the a lot to show I'm not being serious. I think they do help.

I suppose emoticons do help convey what a writer is feeling through text. A post is different than talking to people because you can't see their face, so an emoticon helps a bit with that. But people are saying nowadays that emoticons should be removed from text because they aren't appropriate with words (think about it, people didn't use emoticons 2000 years ago).

I tend to use emoticons in my text a lot, but more out of habit. I don't know if they help others understand me though. x3

I personally think that emoticons are more for light-hearted fun use. I wouldn't dream on using an emoticon when I actually want to express more serious emotions.
