Homosexuality is still not completely accepted in the U.S. It still causes massive rifts in social groups and is a hot topic. States are beginning to accept same-sex marriage (My Hawaii does) and other states are allowing for same-sex civil union/partnerships and other legal status.

When will sexual orientation be as mundane as being right- or left-handed? Specifically in the U.S. but if you're not from here, tell me about your country, too.

I highly doubt it will stop anytime soon. People are still homophobic about the whole situation or it's a major sin to have the same sex marriage. I'm a straight guy, but I have nothing against the gays. To me it doesn't matter. If you love the person you are with and they make each other happy regardless if they are both male or female. I say go get hitched. You shouldn't have to worry about it.

I find it wrong when two women are together. It's hot and sexy, but it's disgusting when two men love each other and ridicule for it too. Constantly being picked on and sometimes ends in worse.

When they realize that it is nothing wrong with being with someone they love. They will still try their best to ban gay marriage. I believe it haves to do with Christan community what keeps gay marriage apart that and the government in my opinion.

Natas : You said that it doesn't matter to you, however, you refer to them as "the gays" and "find it wrong when two women are together". Your diction confuses me. You make them sound distant and your post seems contradictory.

I think America will be more accepting of homosexuality, bisexuality, etc. once people understand that it is not a choice and stop seeing it as disgusting.

The Ancient Romans get a lot of flak for many things, however, they were very tolerant of homosexuality (which would be an understatement). In fact, I believe that there was only one emperor that was heterosexual.

As much as I would desire to see total equality of all people, but based on the current state of humanity, it would be a little naive.

Call me a fool, but I am one of those people that firmly believes no one should be treated unfairly based upon gender, color, ethnic backgrounds, wealth, sexual orientation etc. We shouldn't be judged based upon any of those factors etc.

However, it is difficult to see gay marriage as universally accepted in the near future. I reason I say this is simple: the concept of environment, and the often stupidity presented by humans. Basically, if someone was in an anti-anything environment for a prolonged period, and no other opinions were offered by any solid constituency then they will likely harbor the same opinion. A perfect example is the racism against African Americans in the U.S. From when it was first colonized to until only a few decades ago people faced immense prejudice because of the color of their skin. The reason it was continued for so long, and still exists today, is because people grew up learning that racism was acceptable.

Attitudes against homosexuality is the same way, but they are even deeper rooted. We are making progress but it is excruciatingly slow...some people just refuses to change their ideologies because it is too "foreign."

Ok I am tired and rambling so the short and simple: It will take a lot of time before all the states receives the rights for gay marriage.

I think it will be eventually... although I seem to remember hearing that the majority of people (according to polls) already are okay with it and the legislation is just lagging behind that.

I wish that people would stop forcing their morals on the majority. There are certain things that 90% of people agree on in the moral realm.... and this is not one of them. I'm the type of person that I would rather people were free to choose and we could find out if gay marriage is a good or bad thing based on actually trying it out rather than banning it out of prejudice or fear without knowing.

Gay marriage has been legal in Canada for at least 5 years and as far as I can tell the fabric of society hasn't fallen apart.

warmaker : it goes further than that,in quite a few states being gay is an imprisonable offence, thats the kind of opression you expect from africa or middle east.
its ironic that so america was founded on the idea government wouldnt medal with there rights, yet many americans have no problem regulating who can sleep with who,the supporters would be up in arms if the government tried to regulate how hetrosexuals did it.
you should watch on youtube michael moore sodomy mobile, its the funniest gay rights video ever.
NotJon : i think he believes its wrong but that you have no right to force one groups beliefs on the others

I really don't know. I'm straight but I believe people should have the right too choose what they will and will not do in there life. And some people think its just a choice that they choose but I don't think it's a choice. I respect every single one of them. But I really do not know when and if it will ever be acceptable.

NotJon : Considering I majored in Ancient History, I find that last statement about the emperors interesting since it is news to me. They did have a somewhat more tolerant attitude, but it was really the Greeks that were more accepting of it... in Athens anyway. Not Sparda though, Sparda needed a constantly replenishing population because of all the wars (this is ironic considering the pastime of oiled up wrestling).

Honestly, as much as I want people to wake up tomorrow and have no prejudice against anyone, I know it won't happen. I figure in another century or so it might be more acceptable... but considering that there are still areas where people act like Jim Crow laws still apply I find it doubtful it will any time soon.

Elara : I have degrees in military history and I'm shocked that you said Sparta did not engage in homosexuality. Plato himself wrote "Republic" in which his Ideal Society was based on Spartan militaries, where gay sexuality was the glue that held the armies together and instilled greater bravery in combat.

Thebes had their Sacred Band but homosexual relationships were built into Spartan military structures from young training on. Spartans, specifically the military, practiced pederasty just like Athenians. Pre-marital sex between males and females was considered socially taboo and men often married after they proved their mettle. It was at that point that they turned to heterosexuality to procreate.

Homosexuality was central to relationship-building in the Spartan military structure.

I would also love to wake up and find no one cared about what others did as long as they didn't hurt anyone else. That would be a nice world.

I do not know and I still do not get why they are so offensive about this. Let people be who they want to be, God is probably not going to be mad at you if you are in love with a guy if you are a boy or a girl in love with another girl. I do not have any gay friends, but if I do, i would accept him for who he is because there is nothing wrong being homosexual.

What do you mean by "accept"?

If "accept" meaning that believing that certain states have it legalized, then I would say that has been fine. Nothing you can do with the government if they ruled it to be legalized other than continue to argue against it. If it is legalized, I disagree with it, but we will move on.

If "accept" meaning not discriminating or abusing homosexuals, I would say that this has been fine in the US. Only extreme bigots show hatred and dehumanization towards homosexuality. Those who are truly Christian would disagree with their lifestyle, but would not dehumanize them and still love them as people.

If "accept" meaning that it is ok to have a homosexual lifestyle, then as long as there are Bible-believing Christians in this country, it will not be accepted as right. This, to Christians, is not a religious issue, but a moral one. Believing that it is a sin means believing that it is wrong to do it, just like all other sins. If you look at other things that are considered wrong, there would be some support of limitation or law against it.

As a person who believes that homosexuality is wrong, it would be consistent to my beliefs not to support gay marriage.

I don't understand how people can find lesbian relationships "sexy or hot" but if it's two guys it's completely wrong. I say let people be people it may or may not be their choice but you don't have to ridicule them. What if Jesus was a homosexual would you still think it's wrong or immoral?

Choko453 : "What if Jesus was a homosexual would you still think it's wrong or immoral?"

That is not a valid hypothetical situation, because Christians believe that Jesus is God and is sinless.

Choko453 : I understand your point, but in this case it's not a valid point; you'd have to use another example. First, according to the Bible, homosexuality is an abomination to Jesus. Second, Jesus was God in the flesh - therefor he had no sexual orientation; for him to be attracted to his creation would be a perversion, and he's perfect without any perversion.

warmaker : I consider Sparta to be more of a bi-sexual society... generally though, regardless of your actual feelings, you married and had children. Hence why I say they were not really that accepting. I love Sparta, it was one of my favorite things to read about.

I would like to point out that contrary to what play4fun said, gay bashing is in no way limited to the extreme bigots in this or any other county. The violence might be, but every time someone shies away from a gay person just because they are gay, not talk to them because they are gay, tell others to stay away because they are gay, etc it is discrimination. Just look how hard it was to get DADT revoked... I mean, what, gays cannot fight to defend their country? It will cause problems and make people uncomfortable? Those are the same things they tried to use to bar women from the service, and this time they couldn't even argue that gays are 'physiologically weaker than men' like they did with us.

I would like if it were, because there have been findings that gay men have more stable relationships than heterosexual marriages, but it won't happen. There are too many bigots and xtians that believe that being gay is "morally wrong."

There is a certain mod on here who, by his profile, is only fourteen or so but believes that all homosexuality is disgusting and deserving of death. I don't see who someone has sex with should be anyone's business.

I'm not preaching or anything because I think gay sex is disgusting, homosexual men sex, and I don't like seeing them kiss in public or in the movies and such. I respect their lifestyle and choice to live in such a way.

(I don't like seeing anyone kiss in public. I think it is tacky and should be reserved for privacy.)

When will sexual orientation be as mundane as being right- or left-handed?

I have no idea. It could even go through cycles as far as I know.

When will homosexuality be acceptable in the U.S.?

This is basically the above still, but I added this because I think the more important aim is tolerance. Admittedly, homosexuality and heterosexuality aren't right-or-left-handed to me. In my opinion, government shouldn't have any power to define the terms of relationships like marriage; it should be left to private marital contracts with the details, like property and child custody, visitation and such left to the adult parties involved.

I feel the only thing I can add to this topic is my personal stance on homosexuality. Feel free to reply to me with any questions --I do not know how I will answer them, but it is worth a shot.

As a born-again Christian, I do not find homosexuality to be merely a moral wrong but as a sin that is deserving of punishment. However, this should not mean in any way that I would be discriminating against people with such sexual orientations.

I strive to be accepting of homosexuals, but I should explain it in greater detail. The big issue I stand against is gay marriage. Because of my faith in God, I believe that allowing gay marriage would be trampling on my faith. Please understand, I do acknowledge that no one would want me to receive it this way, but I simply stand against gay marriage. I do believe that homosexuals should have a right to pursue a domestic relationship.
