So the scripture is Ecclesiastes 7:16,

Do not be overly righteous, Nor be overly wise: Why should you destroy yourself?

So what does this scripture mean to you?

Edit: I gave a link that went to the rest the chapter, however, as a whole, it's not really applicable to the verse... I think. I mean I have my own perception of course, but I think at first glance the verse seems out of place, lol.

I think it's saying to not take life so seriously. I don't think it's a contradiction at all. For righteousness to exist, there must be a qualifier, in this case evil. Overly wise I would interpret as being a way of saying "don't over think what you have to do." It's saying not to be too extreme. You must live a life of balance. You must accept that the right thing may not always be the right thing and that you must analyze all of your actions or choices. I assume that this would lead to stress and stress can kill you know. Just do what you can and learn as you go along.

(SIDE NOTE)Remember what the entire theme of Ecclesiastes is. It is saying that there is nothing "under the sun" that can give meaning to life. Throughout this book, it would seem that it is talking about living a life with pleasure, but it is to say that we should pursue a God-centered life. Good things and bad things will happen and they are unavoidable, and know this:

"When times are good, be happy;
but when times are bad, consider:
God has made the one
as well as the other.
Therefore, a man cannot discover
anything about his future." (Ecclesiastes 7:14)

That does not mean that we should avoid the pleasures in life, because they are gifts from God. But the whole point of the book is to seek a God-centered life.

As for the verse that you mentioned, I have to go through the context of the verse:

15 In this meaningless life of mine I have seen both of these:
a righteous man perishing in his righteousness,
and a wicked man living long in his wickedness.

16 Do not be overrighteous,
neither be overwise—
why destroy yourself?

17 Do not be overwicked,
and do not be a fool—
why die before your time?

18 It is good to grasp the one
and not let go of the other.
The man who fears God will avoid all extremes.

Seeing the surrounding verses, the author used his experiences and concluded his observation that "righteous man perishing in his righteousness, and wicked man living long in his wickedness", which concludes in verse 16 and 17, to not go on both ends of the spectrum. Also notice that in the end, it said that "The man who fears God will avoid all extremes." (v.18)

So from all of this, the verse is saying that we should not be self-righteous (overly righteous). I don't see it as a contradiction because this would lead to pride of self, which is a bad thing in God's eye.

I think this is the best way to explain the verse. It says elsewhere that the only good or righteous person is God (in fact Jesus might say that himself). And no matter how good we might be we still are sinners. No matter how much good we try to do there is always more we could do or more we could sacrifice to building up the kingdom of God on the earth.
