I recent read an article that was kinda interesting, titled "reading the Bible in Spanish" It was not really about talking about reading in Spanish, but it was talking about how many of the people and events in the Bible has been created "innocent." We can see all this when we have Bible stories spoken to children. All the heroes have been depicted as innocent and amazing, when in reality, the Bible talks about them still being human, and that they have flaws. Example: David has been depicted as the great and pure King, but in the Bible, we see David struggle in sin, including lust and murder; Gideon was one of God's judges, but we see him fail by creating an golden idol and worship it.

The author was compare this depiction of these events in the Bible with history, that there are times that we make history innocent to the children and it actually distorts reality. If we see the Spanish, they have to deal with their horrible history of inquisition, destruction of a civilization, and they learn and cope from it. Compare it to American history, some people try to create an innocent version of American history and distort the truth.

Basically, the author reminds us to read the Bible with what is in the Bible. Just because there are heroes in the Bible does not mean that they are perfect, which they are not. And making them look innocent is distorting the truth.

What do you think?

I think holding up the average character in the Bible to such high standards is unfair to us living now. We look back and figure they were these amazing unshakable people who never doubted God, or sinned, or anything like that.

The truth is very different. Moses committed murder. Noah was a drunk. David was an adulterer. Peter denied Jesus 3 times. Paul killed Christians. Those are the ones that just popped into my head. To ignore the imperfections and mistakes that these and others made is to create false expectations for ourselves. We can still make mistakes that aren't nearly to this level (not that I'm suggesting there are "worse" sins.... but the effects of these sins on the lives of those who commit them are worse.... totally different topic ) and still have strong faith and do many great things. We don't need to live under the false idea that because we aren't as good at being good as some of the people in the Bible that we can't be saved.

Yeah I think it's an error to put people in the Bible on pedestals because it takes sin out of the picture. In reality the stories of the Bible were in part written for our benefit to reflect on in our Christian walk, we can't live up to them if they're sinless.

Edit: (Not saying live up to sin) just asserting that everyone in the Bible, except for Jesus, was a sinner.

This is a great post. It's good to be reminded that people in the Bible were only human as well and had their own shortcomings and God still used them in spectacular ways. It can be discouraging sometimes when we compare ourselves with great people in the Bible and thier accomplishments. But, that's the profound message revealed in their lives, that though they were imperfect, God is perfect, and was still able to achieve His will using ordinary people. Because it's not about who we are, its about who He is.

It is annoying that they do this and I almost consider it to be lying. Gods followers in the bible were some of the nastiest people around before God found them. This is the same kind of thing they do with Jesus, make him out to be a hansom white guy with pretty long beautiful hair. When reality looking the exact opposite.

Watering down the Bible is as bad as changing the Bible. It makes me angry, because if you want your little Jimmy to be all safe and comfy in that bubble, just don't even bother teaching the kid a thing. Why? Because the bubble resists anything that can be connected to knowledge, and the mind.

If these parents want Christian kids, and just keep watering the crap down, they are just getting half-born Christian fetuses. Sex is something God made. Don't teach them it's gross. I could go on, but no. I won't.

On the bigger picture, it's stupid to make anyone from any holy book become some boring anime character. If I want to get an annoying cheerleader type character, I'll watch the 4Kids dub of Yu-Gi-Oh!. Not read water in paper form. Sin is bad. Yeah. Sin exists. No, because little Jimmy is supposed to be another Jesus.
