The Kingdom Hearts series was actually pitched inside of an elevator. Basically, Nomura happened to be in the same elevator as a Disney executive, and pitched the idea of a Final Fantasy and Disney crossover to him.

And it took off from there!

Fun facts I found:

1. In Megaman 7's intro sequence, Dr. Wily is mostly covered by other graphics. Extracting his sprite from the game will show that he has distinct breasts. The orientation of his shoulders and arms mean they couldn't be pectoral muscles. This could simply be poor rendering by the artist, but given the precise nature of pixel art it is more likely to be intentional, and possibly a joke by the developers.

2. The super mushrooms in Mario are based on a fungi named Amanita Muscaria. They make the user feel as though they are growing in size. This effect was also referenced in "Alice in Wonderland."

3. When the Pokemon Paras evolves into Parasect, it's actually being engulfed by the fungi growing on its back. It takes over the Pokemon's and does all the thinking. This essentially leaves the Pokemon zombified and lifeless, as illustrated by its lack of pupils.

4. Donkey Kong was originally set to be a Popeye arcade game. Mario was Popeye, Pauline was Olive Oyl, and DK was Bluto. Nintendo lost the license to the game, but Miyamoto did not want to drop the project, so he filled in the blanks with his own characters.

5. Megaman's Dr. Light and Dr. Wily's full names are Thomas Light and Albert Wily, based off the scientists Thomas Edison and Albert Einstein. Einstein made the formula that allowed the creation of the atomic bomb, and could be the reason a Japanese developer would choose him as a villain.

6. The school from Silent Hill 1 was based off the school from the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie "Kindergarten Cop."

7. In Final Fantasy X there is a scene between Tidus and Yuna on a bridge in which Tidus attempts to teach Yuna to whistle. She is unsuccessful, but then says to Tidus that if they were to become separated that he should whistle and she would come running. Later on in Final Fantasy X-2 you can visit the same bridge and hear a faint whistle off in the distance.

8. According to a recent interview between Shigeru Miyamoto and the French publication 'Gamekult', Miyamoto loves Disney, and their interpretation of Peter Pan inspired Link's design. This inspiration could also be why the Kokiri never age.

9. When the demonic boss 'Diablo' is released in the final level of Diablo 1, he says something in a bizarre language. When played backwards the voice is English. It says, "Eat your vegetables and brush after every meal."

10. According to the Super Mario Bros. instruction book, when the koopas first invaded the Mushroom Kingdom they turned its people into blocks.

11. In the NES game Punch-Out!! the Russian fighter Soda Popinski was originally named Vodka Drunkenski. They changed his name to avoid controversy.

12. There's an old Japanese idiom that says, "A duck comes along carrying a leek." It means a happy convenience, as duck with leek is a popular meal. The Pokemon Farfetch'd is based on this saying. The anime also states they are rare due to them being delicious. It seems Farfetch'd were designed to be eaten from the very beginning. Any notion of them being used as food was later toned down or dropped, along with the word 'leek', which is now called a stick or a stalk.

13. Those aren't silver boots. All spacecraft pilots in the Star Fox Universe amputate their legs so that blood doesn't drain from their brain when they are under intense G-forces.



14. The biggest map in any video game belongs to the Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall. It's 62,394 square miles. Over 4,000 times larger than the map in the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

15. Mario and Paarthurnax (Skyrim) are voiced by the same person, Charles Martinet. Cortana, Peach, and Toad are also voiced by the same person, Jen Taylor.

16. The announcer in Super Smash Bros. Brawl (who also voices Crazy Hand and Master Hand) is Pat Cashman, who was the announcer for 'Bill Nye, the Science Guy'. He even acted in some scenes of the show.

17. The 7th dungeon of Twilight Princess ' City in the Sky' is speculated to be based on a painting called 'Another World' by M.C. Escher. The creatures in the paintings resemble oocca's and are seen standing on walls, in Twilight Princess the oocca are found running on the walls and floor.

18. Toy Story's Woody and Buzz were set to appear as summons in Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix but were removed for unknown reasons. These models were found in the code, untextured, and amongst the game's summons.



19. The design of the PlayStation 2 is based on an old Atari computer, the Falcon 030 Microbox. Sony bought the design patent when Atari were going bankrupt.

20. A penguin in the english version of Wario Land II throws bowling balls at Wario. If they hit, he becomes dizzy, burps, and needs to splash himself off with water to go back to normal. In the Japanese version the penguin actually throws beer. This explains the out of place animations and why Wario needs water. The beer was censored for obvious reasons.

21. Nintendo allocated $80 million to provide gaming gloves to players who had hurt their hands while playing the notorious Mario Party joystick rotating mini-games.

22. Shigeru Miyamoto had originally intended for Bowser to be an ox, and based him on the main antagonist from the animation 'Alakazam the Great.' This is likely why his modern design has horns and a defined muzzle, despite him being a turtle.

23. In a recent interview with 'Game Informer,' Miyamoto revealed that the Koopalings are not actually Bowser's children.

24. In issue 260 of Nintendo Power, Yuji Naka revealed that the initial concept for Sonic the Hedgehog's gameplay came from playing level 1-1 Super Mario Bros. over and over again as fast as he could, since you always had to play the level first regardless of whether you used warp zones or not. 'I always tried to get through the level as fast as I could. And that inspired the initial concept of Sonic the Hedgehog.'

25. There's evidence suggesting that Psychic Type in Pokemon is weak to Bug, Ghost, and Dark Types because they are basic fears, and fear can manipulate the mind. This is further implied by the ability Rattled (or jitter in Japanese) where the user's Speed stat is raised one stage when hit by Bug, Dark, or Ghost-Type moves, implying they have been shook up, or scared.

Did you know, while the original Atari Football game was first created in 1973, it wasn't released until 1978? It was delayed because the game couldn't scroll the screen -- players couldn't move beyond the area shown on the monitor. When the game was finally released, it became the first game to utilize scrolling, a key part of many games today.

Did you know that, Link, the main protagonist from the Legend of Zelda series, is literally based off Peter Pan, a famous Disney character. Both of them are very similar by appearance, both wear green tunics, and both have a fairy. This is because Shigeru Miyamoto loves Disney so much.

Did you know that the Master Chief was only 6 year old, and was already jacked up when he was abducted. There are reports that his family was killed, but they have been recently sighted, according to the #HUNTtheTRUTH thing Halo 5 : Guardians is doing. ( I might have some of that wording mixed up, but it's close enough ) 

Did you know that in the game League of Legends, the Zombie Brand skin references Micheal Jackson's Thriller dance? It's true, really. He's just one of a few characters who reference Micheal Jackson, the other two being Warwick and Talon... While Talon's dance animation is iconic it couldn't be more awkward lol

Originally Donkey Kong was meant to be an arcade adaptation of the "Popeye" comic strip. When Nintendo couldn't secure the rights, Miyamoto moved on to create new characters and settled upon the love triangle between Pauline (A name that was adapted from a Nintendo America's Warehouse Managers Wife) a carpenter named "Jumpman"(Later adapted into a Plumber named Mario in later years) and a gorilla. This obviously mimicked the story between Bluto Popeye and Olive oyl.

With regards to Donkey Kong, Miyamoto was mistaken in his English when coming up for the name of the game. Donkey he though meant "Stupid" in English. So he figured the name would translate into something similar to "Stupid Ape"

Sadly, that was not the case and when he presented this idea to Nintendo of America, his name was met with Laughter....but that being the case, it still "STUCK" so to speak and the rest was history.

Which Super Mario Bros. 2 is the original is not actually clear. After the release of the original Super Mario Bros, Miyamoto started working on a two-player sequel. In this version, the screen scrolled vertically as players jumped from platform to platform. They could also pick up and throw certain items, as well as the other player. However, The Lost Levels ended up being finished and released first. Mario 2 was slightly re-designed with more horizontal segments and a new cast of characters. The game was changed to "Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic." Nintendo thought that the difficulty in the Lost Levels might alienate children of North America, so Doki Doki Panic ended up being released in NA as Super Mario Bros. 2. The Mario re-skin was later released in Japan as "Super Mario USA."

Halo 2 and Halo 3 were suppose to be combined but do to time restraints this was scrapped thus making Halo 3 its own game

Not sure if anyone's posted this one or not, but the original Final Fantasy supposed to be the last game that Square would ever make because of their financial troubles. The success of the game is the reason why Square's still around as Square Enix, and it's also a huge reason why JRPG's have become so popular.
