The Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past Review by: chaoscontrolx - 9.7/10

Don't underestimate a kid with a sword!
This is Chaoscontrolx with my second review ladies and gentlemen! Today we are looking at what may be the most favorable title in the Legend of Zelda series, Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past! The third Zelda title in the series (if you want to be literal here) for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System! And boy, do we have a lot to cover this time around! So why don't we get started! Like all my reviews will be, let's begin with the plot.

Plot:
Let me get one thing straight. I won't be going over how this game's plot effects the franchise as a whole, no. I will be going over how the plot in this game is. Besides, back then only 3 games were present. the first, the second, and this game. So without further ado let's get started!

As a prequel to the first 2, Link to the past is a whole different generation. So this game takes place way before the others. Anyways, there exists a "Golden Land" that contains the Triforce itself. Many have died trying to reach the Land and obtain the triforce to make their wishes reality. The Golden land later in time gives out an evil energy cause chaos to erupt. to stop this, Seven sages use their powers and abilities to seal the passage to the Golden Land, thus having peace prosper over Hyrule. Centuries later a dark wizard known as Agahnim discovered the way to get to the golden land. With this, his plan begins to take action. He obtained the king of Hyrule and... Well, kills him in the most harsh of ways. He kidnaps the Seven Maidens (descendants of the Seven sages) and attempts to use their power to establish a connection between the Golden Land and the Light World. During the nighttime, Zelda, (one of the maidens) speaks telepathically to Link's uncle. Despite the uncle's warnings, Link proceeds to the castle anyway. He finds his wounded uncle on the floor. With his dying breath, he gives link his Shield and Sword. The beginning his adventure. Our hero eventually rescues Princess Zelda and leaves her with the priest located in the sanctuary, who informs Link that he will need the master Sword, A.K.A "The Blade of evil's bane" to successfully defeat Aghanim. To obtain such a blade, he must find 3 pendants that are located all over Hyrule, and present them to the sword.

After pulling the sword from it's resting place, Aghanim captures the final maiden, Zelda, and transports her to the Dark World along with the other 6 maidens. He then sends Link into the dark world. To rescue each maiden, he must go to 7 different palaces in order to find them and have them escape. Once this is completed, the maidens open the passage to the final dungeon where Link confront's Aghanim. However when he is defeated, Ganon appears from his back, and wanders off. Later Link goes out of his way to defeat Ganon, and after doing so, he manages to find the Triforce and makes him wish. Destroying the Dark World, restoring the Light World, and having his uncle alive again. Link then heads off into the forest to place the Master Sword in it's resting place. Where it sleeps... forever. (Not exactly)

You can tell that compared to Zelda 1 and 2, Zelda 3 is much more "in depth" plot wise. It is way more deep than saving the princess and defeating the villain.

Now with that large sum of plot in, let's start with the game play.

Gameplay: Very unlike Zelda 1, Link is much more easy to control. He can move in 8 directions. Not just 4. Making it way more easy to avoid enemies. Another improvement would be the swordplay. Previous installments had Link simply stab in front of him. Now, Link actually swings the sword. Giving him better range, and making it easier to kill enemies and bosses. Along with the new swordplay, Link has a spin attack which can be used by holding down the attack button and releasing it. Giving him a heck of more range, and more power than you would apply by simply swing the sword. The final important thing added to the game play is the dash. After getting the first pendant, you will obtain a pair of boots. They will allow you to dash by holding the A button for a while. This can also be used as an attack and very useful when you need to get some place fast. However take note that hitting a wall will cause rebound. So you might want to stop yourself before hitting a wall.

Graphics: When it comes down to graphics, Zelda 3 doesn't disappoint at all! The animations for Link are all on point. Compared to Zelda 1, and I have to make of note of this, the graphics here are way more helpful. In Zelda 1, you have to use bombs to crack the walls. The problem here is that no wall looks relatively different from another. So it would be difficult to find which walls to bomb without a guide. Here, if a wall could be bombed, it would show that by having a cracked wall sprite, or by being a different color. Having much more variety in sprites can be an extremely helpful piece in the Zelda series. Now let's compare it to a future SNES game. How about Mega Man 7? The graphics in that game are a lot better than the ones in this game. But only for it's extra detail in color and overall body detail. Mind you, the graphics in this game are still very good. They just don't compare to future SNES games by much.

Sounds: The OST can change the mood of the game depending on the sound of it. For example, take the Hyrule theme. It's probably one of the calmest themes ever to be composed from the Zelda series. it's a real mind soother and you feel that everything is OK in this area. Now let's take the theme that you get when fighting bosses. The theme conveys what exactly it should. Danger. It gives you the sense of danger that you  need to overcome in order to save the world. The mood of the themes really conveys the mood of the situation you're in.

Addictiveness: In an RPG-ish game such as this one. I just can't seem to put down this game. I mean swinging a sword in order to kill enemies, growing stronger as if you were Mega Man X. That's something you really have to try out. It's presenting the theme of the game. Something that most Zelda games can accomplish. You feel the power when you face Ganon at the end of the game. You feel like a novice warrior when you first your uncles Sword ans Shield. You also feel like a true hero when you place the master sword back into it's place. This is the kind of game someone can't just put down. You want to feel stronger as you go on. And that's exactly what this game is doing.

Depth: Depth... How much exactly does this game have to offer? I can't say that compared to the other games, nothing much has really changed except for the extra power-ups. And even then, they don't really offer anything game play wise. Most of it is how a Zelda game should be. Using swords and shields, picking things up, throwing bombs and boomerangs. So not much has been changed from the formula. But where Zelda games go, it has a decent amount of things to offer. However there is one thing that has changed from the previous games. World shifting between the Dark and Light worlds. When you obtain the magic mirror, you can shift to the dark world can finding a teleporter to such a place. Using the mirror in a different place will take you back to the Light World. Which can be pretty useful when coming to finding new items.

Difficulty: Let's compare this game to the last two 1 last time. Just bear with me here guys. It's not anything too easy, but it doesn't even compare to the sheer amount of difficulty that people received from the last two. Especially Zelda 2. But what can I say there? That didn't have the same formula as 1 or 3. but compared to Zelda 1, this game was easier for a number of reasons. 1, the range you had with certain attacks, and 2, the number of movements you were allowed to make. But when it comes to bosses, let's not get to hasty here. Bosses in this game hit really, and I mean really hard. Making them a lot harder than those in said previous games. Things do however pick up in the later half of the game. It just doesn't compare to Zelda 1.

Legend of Zelda Link to the Past is an amazing game and and a great improvement from the last two. For the first Zelda game on the SNES and I recommend this game to anyone who is looking for a good SNES game or had way too much trouble with the first 1. it's a great game and everything you hated about the first game will be washed away with this installment. It will definitely be worth your viz or  money to get and try out this game. Trust me, you won't be disappointed! This has been Chaos with my second review and I hope you enjoyed it.

The Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past Game Description

Recently, famine and drought have plagued Hyrule. When all seemed lost, a mysterious wizard, Agahnim, appeared, and stopped these strange happenings from occurring. But there is talk that Agahnim now rules the country with his magic, behind the scenes. And then, one night, the Princess of Hyrule, Zelda, calls out for help...and the one who hears her pleas is a young lad named Link...

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is a top-down action adventure game (similar to the original Legend of Zelda) for the Super Nintendo and Game Boy Advance. Players assume the role of Link, and their goal is to rescue Princess Zelda and save the land of Hyrule. Unlike turn-based RPGs, all combat in Link to the Past is in real-time - you swing your sword at enemies by pressing a button, or can spin the sword around you for a more powerful attack by holding down the button until it is charged.

Progression through the game is done by conquering a series of dungeons - each dungeon has its own special item associated with it, such as the hookshot (which latches onto a far-off object and pulls Link across) or the hammer (which can be used to flatten objects in your way). Most of these dungeons are rendered impassable until the dungeon's particular item is acquired; from there, the rest of the dungeon becomes accessible due to Link's latest new ability. The bosses of each dungeon are also themed to that level's particular item.

Link starts out with only three units of health; however, these can be increased by defeating dungeon bosses, which give one additional heart container, or by finding four 'pieces of heart'; which can be given for anything from passing a small trial to winning a mini-game. Some of Link's items also use magic - this can be refilled with collectible green magic pots. After defeating the initial three dungeons, Link gains access to the Dark World - many puzzles and difficulties come from alternating between the Light World (Hyrule) and the Dark World to make your way past previously impassable obstacles.

Chris Houlihan room

Start at the Sanctuary and run south with the Pegasus Shoes until you are outside. Then, run south and stop before you hit the barrier. Proceed to run west until you are able to run south. When you run south, you should be in a wooded area with guards. Navigate this area and find the entrance to the castle grounds. While still running, go around the castle grounds to the hole where you fall into at the beginning of the game. If you did it right, you should be in a room with 45 blue rupees and a Saharasla sign that says: 'My name is Chris Houlihan' Sometimes when you are fighting Gannon, you may fall into a hole and this may happen.

I've never actually got around to sitting down and really being able to play this game. It's a shame really, as it is so critically acclaimed.

This game in my opinion is the best Zelda. Yes...even better than Ocarina of Time. :P

No. I 100% completed the game and it didn't crash a single time.
cheezerton 12-25-14 - 09:02 AM
Does this one crash like the Minish Cap game as well?

djura23, to get the crystals, you need to do the obvious: Kill dungeon Bosses. There are 7 dungeons, the 7th containing Princess Zelda.
