The only Zelda game for the Super Nintendo, A Link to the Past is regared as the turning point of Zelda games, featuring the fullest sense of adventure and RPG that a game can offer. It comined the two NES games: The Legend of Zelda and Zelda 2, into one game, and no, I'mnot talking Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt style. I mean they comined the overhead view and smoothness of the first game while having the adventrous and interactive villages of the second game. It would be classed as a masterpiece of the 16-bit era. With that said, lets have a look.

This game is the prequel to start all prequels. This is the game that comes before The Legend of Zelda, and that's as simple as it gets. The story starts off with you, Link, sleeping in your bed. It's one of those dark and stormy nights sort of thing. You are suddenly woken up by a voice in your head. She is asking for your help, and she says that her name is Zelda. Already I can see a huge leap in story telling in this game. So you wake up, and already your playing the game. So you go to the castle and find.....hey wait a minute. This is a prequel of the Legend of Zelda, and the Link in that game was already pretty young to begin with. Now he's even younger? What's going on? This kid can take care of himself in a stormy setting? I have to admit, that's pretty brave of hom for his age. But I digress. You meet your farther and he.....gives you his sword and shield??? Ok, what's going on here? You expect this kid to fight for himself? Well, your farther dies and you carry on.

As you explore the castle, you learn how to use that sword and fight fully trained knights that are prepared for intruders to storm the castle and are able to eb defeated by this kid (just go with it, lets just say Link is blessed with the power of uber skill with a sword). You collect ruppes that can be used to buy stuff in the future. Along the way, you'll find chests, both big and small that will contain treasure and items that will make your life easier, such as the bomb bag to blow thing up and the magic rod to set things alight. Each dungeon (or per say, castle), has a compass, a map and a boss key (with several "Small keys" needed to get through).

The compass is used to find unopened chests and the boss room, which is handy. The map gives you all the rooms that are in the dungeon, which is very handy, and the Boss Key.....opens the boss door to the boss. Then came the most wonderful invention of the cracked wall. This accrually shows you where a wall can be broken down with a bomb. This is what the first game lacked, the ability to tell what walls could and couldn't be blown down with. This makes finding secret rooms so much easier. At the end of every dungeon, there is a boss (of course). These bosses are simple to begin with, but are much more challenging later on, and lets not forget creative.

The controls are as about as fluid as the first Zelda game. Being able to turn directly around and stab something really helps in many situations. You don't slip or slide around unless on ice, which I find perfectly apporiate. You get knocked back when you get hit, and this serves as both an advantage and a disadvantage. On one hand, you could get hit, and by being knocked back, you won't get hit stright away by that same enemy. On the other hand, you could get hit and knocked into a hole, cauing an additional heart being lost or falling to a lower level.

The graphics are simply amazing. They are bight and colourful when they want to, but in the dark world, they are eriee and spooky. I can't find a fault in the graphics. The enemies are frightening, some characters are cute, and the layout for each dungeon is wonderful. The backgrounds are detailed, and the map shows a detailed layout of both the light and dark world. It's a beauty to behold. The music is also a wonder to behold. It's awesome at the bosses and soothing at the story parts. It sets the mood really well and never gets annoying.

A nice feature of this game is you can get medalions that give special powers when you use them, but at a high use of magic. These are only awarded to those who can solve the puzzles to get them. There are three, and each one gives a different effect when used. I liked the prospect of using something as a weapon other than your sword, or using the magic rod or boomarang to subsitue for the sword. I also like the puzzles in game. Some are really simple to me, while future ones had me looking for a walkthough on the internet. I only used it twice, honest =(      Those Bubbles sure are annoying, but there is a way to turn them into fairies.

Getting items, on the other hand, can be both pleasing and a nightmare. The Zora Flippers are 500 ruppes, and can be tediuos if you spend them all on potions and stuff. You can obtain different bottles if you look hard enough. These can be found in the oddest of places, and there are four to collect. Oh, and a word of warning, don't mess with the cuccos. Just....just don't. Those chickens will kill you if you mess with them. Just attack them several times and you'll know what I mean.

Overall, I give this game a 8.9/10      This game is a joy to play, and any Zelda fan will be delighted to play it. It took what made the first Zelda game on the NES and perfected the 2D overview game. The 3D games that were still to come blew my mind, but when it comes to the classic overview type, it really doesn't get any better than this.
