Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia Review by: gamerforlifefor.. - 6.5/10

Shadows of Almia
I promised back in January that I'd be making more Pokemon reviews for the 20th anniversary of Pokemon. I meant that, but for some reason, I got sidetracked with more obscure games I wanted to review instead... Today, I'm getting back on track by reviewing a spinoff game for the DS called Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia. It came out back in 2008, and is the 2nd game in the Pokemon Ranger trilogy. How does this game compare to other spinoff games in the series? I'll tell you what I think by making this review.

Graphics: 8/10 Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia has very impressive visuals compared to other DS Pokemon Spinoffs such as the Mystery Dungeon games. There are lots of different environments that you'll travel through on your journey, including a burning forest, a volcano, an ice palace, and even underwater areas as well. Each area in the game looks pretty decent for it's time, and honestly, I'm willing to say the visual style in Shadows of Almia is as good as the graphics found in Pokemon Platinum. While the visuals in this game may not be as great to look at as Final Fantasy IV or III for example, but it's good enough for me to give the graphics an 8 out of 10.

Sound: 7/10 The music in the Ranger series as a whole is very lackluster compared to other Pokemon Spinoffs like the Mystery Dungeon series, but Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia still has a pretty decent soundtrack. With good tracks such as the Gem Guardian Theme, the final battle theme, and the Tension theme, you're bound to at least find some enjoyment in listening to the tunes found in this game, even though the soundtrack as a whole isn't as great as the Mainstream games or the Mystery Dungeon series. Still, the soundtrack is good enough for me to give the sound a 7.

Addictiveness: 5/10
Replayability and gameplay is where the Ranger series as a whole falters, and Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia is no exception. Basically in each battle, you have to use your stylus and repeatedly draw circles around the Pokemon, dealing damage to them in the process. You keep doing this until you've taken down the Pokemon, and it'll temporarily join your party. Then, you can use it's move to aid you in battle or to take out an object standing in your way. Afterwards, the Pokemon will return to the wild. While at first, this concept is somewhat enjoyable, it quickly starts to become very tedious, having to constantly circle every Pokemon you go up against. Of course as you progress, battles become progressively tougher, and eventually, I started taking long breaks from the game just so I didn't have to keep circling Pokemon. I really wish that there could've been some new gameplay mechanic added to this game that would've made the gameplay a little more enjoyable than in the original Ranger game. Unfortunately, they're isn't, so I'm giving the addictiveness a 5.

Story: 6/10 In Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, you start off as a student of the Ranger School in Almia, working to graduate and become a Pokemon Ranger. While there, the player meets 2 friends. Rythmi, a girl who dreams of becoming a Pokemon Operator, and Keith, your main rival in the game who's goal is to become the best Ranger in the Almia region. Eventually, they graduate and go their separate ways to follow their dreams. You start your work as a Ranger, but soon, you learn that an evil organization, Team Dim Sun, is using these mysterious machines to hypnotize and control wild Pokemon. While performing your duties as a Ranger, you must also save the hypnotized Pokemon, find out what Team Dim Sun is trying to do, and stop them. The plot isn't anything special, but I've definitely seen a lot worse. Overall, I'm giving the story for Shadows of Almia a 6.

Depth: 7/10 Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia has enough content to keep fans of the series playing for a decent amount of time. Along with the main story missions, there are 60 side quests for you to complete, and 6 special missions, which are unfortunately no longer available to download due to the Nintendo WiFi Connection being taken down several years back. Even though those missions are no longer available, there's still enough stuff to do in Shadows of Almia for me to give the depth a 7.

Difficulty: 5/10 The game starts off pretty easy, especially while you're still in Ranger School. Once you start making story progress however, the game starts getting a lot tougher, with Pokemon unleashing more powerful attacks, and becoming more elusive. The later bosses Pokemon in particular start becoming significantly harder to capture. While there are some harder DS games out there, Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia provides a decent enough challenge for me to give this category a 5.

Overall Score: 6.5/10 If you've already played a game in the Ranger series, you pretty much already know what to expect gameplay wise: circles, circles, and more circles... With improved graphics, a good soundtrack, and a decent storyline, Shadows of Almia is a little more enjoyable than it's predecessor. However, the fact that the gameplay wasn't improved from the original makes Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia only worth buying if you haven't played a Ranger game before, or if you like drawing circles around stuff. If not, then Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia probably isn't the game for you.  Overall, I'm giving Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia a 6.5 out of 10.
