Sonic 2 Adventure Edition (v2.0) Game Description

Sonic 2 Adventure Edition transplants various gameplay mechanics from Sonic Adventure to Sonic 2.

Features:
* The title screen's 1 Player/2 Player selection has been replaced by a choice between Adventure mode, where you play through levels in order, and Trial mode which allows you to select a single stage.
* A character select screen is presented before beginning the level in Adventure mode or heading to the level select in Trial mode, which includes an animation of each character and their completion percentage.
* The HUD has been redesigned, removing the score counter, expanding the minute counter to two digits, adding a centisecond counter, replacing the "RINGS" text with an image of a Ring, and removing the character's name from the life counter.
* The end of level score tally now includes an Enemy Bonus, which counts any points you get during the level.
* Rather than having the first act end with a signpost, you will instead be transported directly to the second act, making them function as one large level.
* Sky Chase, Wing Fortress and Death Egg now have score tallies (SCZ and DEZ upon completing the level, WFZ upon defeating the boss).
* Each level (barring Sky Chase and Death Egg) has three missions to complete (more info below). Completing these objectives will earn you an Emblem.
* Your collected Emblems, Best Score, Best Time, and Most Rings are saved and can be viewed in the Trial mode level select.
* Clearing Emerald Hill Zone for the first time unlocks Trial mode and Tails as a playable character and AI partner.

Missions:
* Level C: Reach the end of the level.
* Level B: Reach the end of the level with 50 Rings.
* Level A: Reach the end of the level within a time limit (varies by level).

Characters:
Sonic the Hedgehog:
* Sonic can no longer roll by pressing the down button.
* Sonic's Spin Dash is now activated by holding the B button on the ground. It will charge power as you hold the button.
* When the Spin Dash reaches maximum charge, Sonic will stand up and begin glowing blue. Release the B button to activate the Light Speed Attack or Light Speed Dash depending on the presence of Badniks or Monitors.
* Press B while rolling to uncurl and begin running.
* Pressing B while in ball mode in the air causes Sonic to perform a Jump Cancel, canceling all momentum and uncurling from ball mode.
* Pressing A or C while in ball mode in the air initiates a Homing Attack if there is a suitable target nearby, or a Jump Dash if there isn't.
Miles "Tails" Prower:
* Tails can no longer roll by pressing the down button.
* Press A or C in the air to begin flying. Hold A or C to ascend, and hold B to drop quickly.
* Press B while moving to begin rolling. Press B while rolling to uncurl and begin running.
* Pressing B while in ball mode in the air causes Tails to perform a Jump Cancel, canceling all momentum and uncurling from ball mode.

Sonic 2 Adventure Edition (v2.0) Review by: Mohammedroxx3 - 9/10

Gives a Strange and Different Gameplay Expierence
Well, hey guys, I guess it's time to (attempt to) continue on with my sonic marathon review. We are now arriving at my (possibly or probably) last 8-10 reviews of Sonic games before I move on to non-sonic reviews next month. Anyways, let's go ahead and start right onto the review!

Intro:

As you guys can probably guess, this is a Sonic hack of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the sega genesis. (Well, no duh). This mostly features quite an amount of changes in gameplay. The gameplay was really modified in such a unique way that it definitely brought up such a different experience in gameplay compared to most other Sonic hacks and the original Sonic games for the sega genesis. (Which I will shortly explain in the gameplay section of my review). Now, as for the title of this game, "Sonic 2 Adventure Edition (v. 2.0)", I'm really not sure how it uniquely relates to this Sonic hack. I mean, all Sonic games does have an adventure that Sonic (and/or Tails or Knuckles... etc), doesn't it? No, duh. Ehh, but I guess it is a pretty decent name for a Sonic hack. It's kind of funny a little at how no one else came up with that name for a Sonic hack. Anyways, now, let's dive in deeper to the review of this game!

Gameplay: 9

Well, now it's time to explain how the gameplay is pretty unique. To explain it, there are quite an amount of changes in controls (mostly) and special abilities. You can play as Sonic the Hedgehog and/or Tails the Fox in this Sonic hack, each with their special abilities that were really changed, which I will explain:

Sonic the Hedgehog:

With Sonic, you can run and jump normally, however, there are some changes in the controls. You can jump by pressing the A and C buttons. If you press A or C while in mid-air, you will do a homing attack, however, that homing attack is pretty different from the other homing attacks I have seen in other Sonic games/hacks for the Sega Genesis. Normally, how most homing attacks would work, is that if there are no monitors, badniks, or bosses to hit, you will just do an air dash forward and continue rolling in the air to help boost your speed. However, in this Sonic hack, if there are no monitors, badniks, or bosses nearby while you do the homing attack, you actually dash forward in the air just a little bit then Sonic just falls down a bit faster and stops rolling in the air. Ehh... Which kind of sucks and makes the homing attack move slightly boring in this Sonic hack, however, it does help prevent abuse with this move. Now, the next thing is when you do the homing attack while there is a monitor, badnik, or boss nearby. Normally, in most other Sonic games or hacks, you would immediately dash right towards your nearby target, quickly and easily no matter what direction is it facing to you (Whether it is beneath you, higher than you... etc). However, in this Sonic hack, if a nearby target is beneath you or right towards you horizontally, you will dash quickly right towards it, but if it is above you, you will NOT be able to dash towards it automatically. Which is pretty weird and also a bit annoying, but it does help prevent abuse of this move.

Now, the next question is, what about the spin-dash and what does pressing B do? Well, let me say this first, when you run and press the down key while running, you would expect to roll, but strangely, you can't do it with the down key. Pretty strange change, right? However, if you press and hold B while on the ground, you will actually do a spin dash and then when you let go, you will blast off at a decent speed. Also, whats even more insane is that you can do the spin-dash while running at the same time! It actually doesn't work by holding the down key while tapping the jump button on the ground. What a change. Now, one last thing to mention, if you are actually in mid-air and you press the B button, you will immediately fall fast to the ground. Not sure how that is useful but... ok.

Tails the Fox:

Now, as for Tails, you can jump normally by pressing A or C. If you press A or C while in mid-air, Tails will fly! Now, if you press B while in mid-air, Tails will immediately fall fast down to the ground, even while he is flying. A bit similar to Sonic for this one. Also, if you press B while standing idle, Tails won't actually do anything. But if you press B will running, he will actually roll. (Just like Sonic, you can't roll by pressing the down key while running). Thats really about it for the gameplay.

Graphics: 8

There isn't really any changes for the graphics for this Sonic hack. About probably everything was all original. But, I guess I can say that I love the original graphics. It is really bright, colorful, vivid, contrasting a bit, eye catching, and pretty decent quality for a Sega genesis. It is basically something you would love to look at while playing your favorite Sonic game. All the zones really provide a pretty nice view to look at. Like Emerald zone is like pretty beautiful nature in a somewhat high quality background for a Sega Genesis. lol. Everything also has it's detailed and vivid colors. Like Sonic is mostly blue and shining. (Well, almost shining. Literally) Tails is bright yellow and also shining like Sonic. They do not look color-less at all, nothing looks ugly and color-less actually, which is how the graphics should look like. Colorful, beautiful, and simply something that gamers would want to see, or at least can handle seeing it. Yea, nothing else left to talk about.

Sound: 9

Yea, as you guys can probably guess, there isn't any changes for the sounds for this Sonic hack either. All Sound effects and background music were left original. But, I also love the original sounds of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. To start off with the explaining it, firstly, the sound effects are something you would want to hear. They are not disturbing or annoying sounds but they are actually motivating and decent quality sounds to hear. You just like that jump sound when you jump or those rings sound everytime you collect some rings. The background music is also something of pretty high quality for a Sega Genesis. The background music really fits in with the appearance of the zones and they are all pretty catchy. They all pretty much motivates you to play the game and they are really something your ears would love to keep hearing. Chemical plant zone probably has one of my real favorite background musics for Sonic games. It is fitting with the appearance of the zones, it is serious but yet fun, and really motivates you to listen and play the game. It just keeps you playing the game. Yea, thats about it for the sound.

Addictiveness: 8

Well, I guess this game is.... Fairly addicting. To basically explain it, due to the new and unique changes in the controls and special moves, it is something that you would want to go back to and try out again. One of my real favorite thing about this game that makes it a bit more addictive is the way Sonic can do the spin-dash while running at the same time (by pressing B while running), it just increases Sonic's speed while making him roll and just keep going no matter how much times you do the spin-dash while running! I don't remember seeing any other Sonic hack that gives this kind of ability, which is unique and makes you want to specifically go back to this Sonic hack, especially if you like the new and different controls in this Sonic hack. Though, if you are actually more used to rolling by pressing down while running or doing the spin-dash in the original way, you may not find this game very addicting. To be honest, there are also some other sonic hacks out there that makes me never want to stop to go back to them, well, even more than this game, but it is still fairly addicting. Well, at least for me. Thats about it for the addictiveness portion in my review.

Story: 6

Well, as you all can probably guess, it is obviously unchanged. It is that same, old, very simply, boring, and overused Sonic story, yet again. To simply put it, Dr. Eggman has some evil plans and Sonic the Hedgehog and/or Tails the Fox needs to stop Dr. Eggman before it is too late. Will they be able to stop him? Huh, obviously. This doesn't really make you think about anything nor does it leave you wondering about some interesting thing. It mostly jumps straight to the gameplay. But really, the story in Sonic games isn't all that important since the gameplay is what it mostly focuses on. Would you rather have a Sonic game with good gameplay but a simple story? Or an amazing and complex, very interesting story but terrible gameplay? Well, this Sonic hack and all other Sonic games seemed to have mostly turned out well with good gameplay but a simple story, wouldn't you agree? Yea, thats basically why the gameplay is much more important anyways. Thats about it for the story.

Depth: 9

This game does offer quite a lot. It offers the necessary things required to make this a good game (which is the zones and gameplay), and some extra things to add some nice dressing at that salad! Firstly, in the title screen, you can select adventure mode and play as either Sonic or Tails in the character select screen. It goes through the zones in order. Also, it automatically saves your progress so you automatically continue from the last zone you left off. (It uses the SRAM for this). You can also go to the options menu by selecting that in the title screen to delete your save data. Secondly, it offers a trail mode that enables you to select a certain zone to play, however, you can only select the zones you previously completed. Thirdly, I think at the end of the zone, the score thingy also counts how much badniks you killed! Fourthly, once you complete an act in a zone, you instantly get teleported to the next act while keeping all of your rings, which is I guess pretty cool to have one big zone and act, I guess. Fifthly, I think the trial mode menu saves your best time, highest score, highest rings, highest amount of badniks killed... etc recorded to help beat your own record in certain zones! Lastly, the controls and special moves are altered. (I already explained it in the gameplay section, not gonna repeat what I said.) Hopefully, I didn't miss anything but still, that is quite a lot to offer from one Sonic 2 hack, don't ya think? I really think so in my opinion. Thats about it for the deep depth!

Difficulty: 8

Well, this Sonic hack is somewhat hard. Why? It's a little difficult to get used to the new controls. I just always forget how to roll or spin-dash at times until I realize that this is not the original game. Though, it is entirely possible to get used to the controls, but it may or may not be very easy for you, depending on your style of playing games... I guess? Also, some zones are very easy (*cough* Emerald zone *cough*) and other zones are pretty hard *cough* metropolis zone *cough*) It varies on the zone you play and it depends on how you get used to the new controls.

OVERALL: 9

Thats about it, I guess. Thanks for reading! It was a fun review! :)

Remember how in SADX,you could do the Spindash. You could do it when running too.Which means that is you run and do multiple Spin Dashes in a row you could abuse your own speed. This game has it too!

Yeah I don't know either about that 2,147,483,647 score - I have removed a lot of scores with that number. I might just consider banning someone that submits it. :P
8bitNESPlayer 09-27-13 - 08:14 PM
That looks like the max score for the Vizzed's games, those users submitted fake highscores typing a number like 999999999999... and they got that number. It's what I think.
awesome99999 09-27-13 - 07:41 PM
Jerry, I'm not sure if this is related, but 2,147,483,647 is the highest possible value for a 32-bit signed integer in computing(Wikipedia). This may be the reason why this particular value is used so often. Still, this obviously fake score annoys me.
jerryaberry 09-27-13 - 05:32 PM
sonicbrandon: What is the significance of your fake score 2,147,483,647. Why do many people post that exact number?
