Dragon Warrior Monsters 2 - Tara's Adventure Featured Review

Dragon Warrior Monsters 2 - Tara's Adventure Review by: Oldschool41 - 9.2/10

An Old School Game Review
Hello guys; its time for another review by me. This time I'm doing a review on one of my favorite Game Boy Color games I used to play when I was a child; Dragon Warrior Monsters 2: Tara's Advanture. I'm going to discuss both the positives and the negatives of this game (In my previous reviews I didn't go into much detail on the negatives). Alright here we go.

1. Graphics- 9

Since Dragon Warrior Monsters 2: Tara's Advanture is a Game Boy Color game, the graphics might seem out of date by today's standards. But back in the day when the Game Boy Color system was all you could play, the graphics overall are quite impressive. When you first start out in Greatlog (the home area you start in and the place your trying to save), Greatlog is a very detailed area. It has the only bank in the game where you can store items, the only place where you can breed monsters, and the place where you manage your pet inventory. There is a lot more in Greatlog and overall the town is the only "highly detailed" town in the entire game.

Another area where the graphics stand out is when you enter one of the games "dungeons". For example when I enter the Mine Dungeon, I get the feeling that I'm actually inside a cave that is being mined. Another example is when I enter the Haunted Forest Dungeon, I get the feeling that I'm actually inside an actual Haunted Forest. Overall the dungeons are really unqiue and designed very good.

The graphics are also pretty good during the battle bits of the game. Each magic move has a unique appearence that is quite unique and beautiful. For example when I have one member of my party use the "Fireball" spell, a stream of fire will move across the screne burning enemies. Another example is if I use the "Blaze" spell, a buff of fire will erupt from the bottom of the screne burning the oppossing monster.

There is some downsides to the graphics. Unlike Greatlog, the other towns in the game are not very detailed. Most of them just have your standard inns, item shops, and pubs. You'll find yourself just stopping in these towns to buy items, revive your party, and heal your party. If the creators could have added more features and really improved the other towns and add more features.

Another problem is that when an enemy uses a magic spell, nothing appears on the screen. Instead a message will pop up explaining how much damage the enemy has done to your party. I find this quite odd.

While the magic attacks are very unique, the physical attacks are highly disappointing. Unlike how creative the magic was done, once you tell someone in your party to physically attack the enemy, the enemy just "blinks" if struck and you'll get a message about how much damage the physical attack did.

The "Boost" abilities are also disappointing. When I ask someone in my party to use an ability like "Upper" for example, nothing graphically happens. Instead you'll get a message on the bottom of the screen about how much your parties attack or defense rose. But what is most disappointing, is that if an enemy uses the same "Upper" ability, something does end up happening. While its not unique or all that impressive, I still think its odd that when I use "Upper" no graphic appears, but if the enemy does use "Upper" a graphic does appear.

Finally while the Dungeon areas are well done graphically, the World Map area is rather poor. The World Map while big, isn't that graphically unqiue. It does have mountains, trees, and towns; these are just from a birds-eye view and are not actually to scale (particularly the towns once you enter them).

2. Sound- 9

Dragon Monster Warrior 2's sound is quite unique. Similar to the different sound scores when you enter different towns in Pokemon; each "World" you visit has its unqiue sound. Also the Dungeon's have there own unique sound as well. Some like Greatlog's is very upbeat and smoothing, while some like the Cave Dungeon is scary and creepy. When you face off against the Bosses, the battle music changes from its default music. You'll notice that most of the sound comes froma Flute or another similar Wind Insturment, so if you can't stand it, then I suggest that you turn the music off on the game or on your computer.

There is some drawback to the sound. While each World and Dungeon has its unique sound, some stay the same. For example when I unlike "Side-World" areas (Worlds that are not required to enter via the Main plot), the music doesn't change from its default music. This also happens when you enter a town in the "Side-World" areas, as the music remains on the default town music. This is disappointing, but its not overall bad.

A major problem with the music is that when you enter a battle, it has only 2 music scores to pick from: Default or Boss. If the monster's your facing is not a boss, then you'll get the Default music 100% of the time. I find it disappointing that the Battle music has a lack of variety.

Finally, while the music overall is good; it can get annoying after a while. When your spending 2 hours grinding your party listening to the same default World and Battle music, you might end up becoming annoyed after a while. But this isn't much of an issue since you can always turn the music off or mute it.

3. Addictiveness- 10.

Like Pokemon, Dragon Monster Warrior can be quite addicting to play. Like Pokemon, you capture and tame monsters that live across the worlds. You capture monsters by feeding them meat such as "Ribs", "Sirloin", or "Porkchops" and defeating them. Once you defeat the monsters, your party earns experience and your party will level up when enough experience is earned. You can only have 3 monsters in your party so you'll have to make some choices as to what monsters you want in your party. If you capture a monster, but your party is full; they will be sent to a farm (similar to the Pokemon PC storage system). Overall there is a lot to do.

Unlike Pokemon however, when you could pick 1 of 3 starters; you start out with the same monster everytime. While this is a minor issue, its still disappointing with the lack of choices early on.

Another problem is that the monster storage system requires to progress through the story in order to unlock too store more monsters. This creates an issue around the 2nd World Area you visit as a lot of Monsters can be captured at this point, making storing monsters quite difficult. But this gets better once you beat the 2nd World Area.

4. Story- 9.

The story in Dragon Monster Warrior is solid. The story starts off with you, your older brother, and parents moving to Greatlog in start of a new life. While your there you get into trouble with the Prince of Greatlog and a monster. This results in a plug being destroyed which causes Greatlog to sink. While the Monster uses himself as a plug, he asks you to find a replacement plug. After this the story  mostly involves you and monsters you capture to travel to different worlds with each of them having a unique story. At the end of each World, you end up getting something that hopefully will plug up the hole, only for most of them to fail.

I'm not going to spoil the whole story which I had a habit of doing in my old reviews, but the story is solid for this game.

5. Depth- 10.

There is a lot of depth in Dragon Monster Warrior. Each monster can level up learning new magic powers. What is the most unique part of Dragon Monster Warrior is that you can breed new monsters and even unlock Legendary Monsters. This involves you selecting one male monster and one female monster. Once this is done, they disappear and an egg appears. The egg hatchs and congradulations you've gotten a new monster. You'll also encounter a solid amount of different monsters as you venture around each world. So there is a solid amount of different party options to have.

Also as your monsters level up, they learn new and stronger magic abilities. For example if one of my monsters knows the spell "Heal", then most likely once they reach a certain level the monster will forget "Heal" and they will learn the spell "Heal More". This is how most spells progress throughout the game. Your monsters can learn new spells that don't evolve forgeting the original move.

There are some drawbacks to the depth however. If you do end up breeding monsters, the new monster starts out at level 1 so you'll have to level him up if you wish to add him to your party. Also in order to unlock Legendary Monsters, some require specific monsters in order for the Legendary Monster to be created.

But the main problem is managing the different amount of male and female monsters you have. For example, if you have a lot of male monsters, but little to no female monsters; then you'll have not a lot of breeding options. And since monsters have to be level 10 in order for them to breed, you'll find yourself spending a lot of time leveling lower rank monsters just so you can breed them for better monsters.

Yet, despite these drawbacks; the game has a solid amount of depth to it.

6. Difficulty- 8.

At first Dragon Monster Warrior isn't a tough game when you first play the game. The monsters early on are easily beatable and present no challenge. The game however can get really challenging at about the second to last level of the game. At that point you'll notice yourself using mostly magic attacks as these do the most damage. Also the monsters at that point are close to max level so they can damage and kill your party easily if non of your monsters have any healing moves.

The only downside is that some bosses in the game and kill your party easily, making some boss battles annoying if you keep dying. But this is only a minor issue as you just have to grind your monsters to a certain level.

In closing if anyone likes the Pokemon series, then Dragon Monster Warrior 2 is a game you should at least take a look at, as this game is quite similar to Pokemon. Also if anyone likes RPG games then this is game you'll also enjoy.
