Mega Man Battle Network 5 Team Protoman Review by: chaoscontrolx - 8.5/10

Battle Routine Set for the fifth time!
Hello members of viz! This is Chaoscontrolx here with my first review! Today we're taking a look at the fifth installment of the Mega Man Battle Network Series! So sit down and enjoy because I have quite a bit to cover! This game has quite a bit of depth to it. More than the previous installments. Not as much a oh say 6 mind you, but it offers a decent amount of things. Now first, let's begin with the plot.

Mega man Battle Network 5 Plot: A very basic plot that is easy to summarize just for people who are curios. Think of it as Pokemon yet in an alternate universe. So basically, the Internet or "Net" has been taken over by a mysterious group called "Nebula". We've had our fair share of evil groups in the past but they don't just stop at WWW or Gospel, no. We have yet another group who wants to take over the Net. During this event, very early in the game Dr. Regal, the leader of the group kidnaps Yuichiro Hikari, Lan's father. However the one thing that could have ensured his victory, Lan's Personal Terminal or "Pet", has been failed to be obtained. Yet, Lan's friends, Mayl, Dex, and Yai's PETs have all been acquired.

The Officials of SciLab have devised a strategy. This strategy involves gathering a team of highly skilled Navi's and Operators to liberate the captured areas of the Net. Which kicks the Liberation mission into play. Now Lan, having countless victories during the past 4 games, has been invited by Chaud or Baryl (depending on if you play Team ProtoMan or Team Colonel) to join the team. Knowing Lan, he accepts the request for it will put him one step further to rescuing his dad and retrieving his friend's PETs. Looks like we're on a fifth adventure...

Now with the story out of the way... Let's begin with the Game Play.

Game Play: How exactly is Mega Man Battle Network 5 in terms of Game Play you may ask? Well from my perspective it's definitely worthy of trying out for yourself. Like all Battle Network games, you play as both Protagonists Lan Hikari and MegaMan.exe You control Lan in the real world and MegaMan in the cyberworld. You jack in and out of the Net by pressing R. You can usually jack into Computers, monitors, other electronics, and get this, a squirrel in a park. Now for the real moment you've been waiting for. Virus Busting and Net Battles.

Unlike previous franchise like, oh let's say Classic or X, Battle Network follows a different mechanic which involves busting viruses or defeating Navi's with your buster, or Battle Chips. Busting viruses would be considered the easy part for long-time players. Whenever the Custom Gauge fills up, you can go to the Battle Chip selection screen by pressing R or L. Which gives you 5 Battle Chips to pick from. Depending on your chips and codes, you can choose a number of battle chips. Which you can use by simply pressing the A button. These can range from small cannons to hardcore Navi chips. Depending on how you make your strategy, any chip can be useful!

Graphics: Next to Battle Network 6, 5 probably has the best graphics in the series. And for the Game Boy Advance standards, they were awesome for that time period. Everything in this game seems to be caught by the naked eye, and really reflects the graphical side of this game in a good way. Especially in a battle sequence. Being able to see you take out your sword and slashing it across someone's face just feels fulfilling. It's what this series has always done for me graphic wise. Graphics from humans to Navi's. Everything has been enhanced in this game! No matter how you look at it, can you possibly tell me you prefer the graphics from 4 and down for reason's other than nostalgia? It's very hard to do while keeping a straight face. Take 1 look at Battle network. Now look at 5 and you'll see what I mean.

Sound: I have to say, the sounds composed for this game are very nice and good to the ears! Now mind you, i would never pick this game's OST over something like Sonic Advance, or Mario RPG 2, but I can't bash this game on it's soundtrack. The only thing that really bugs me is how repetitive the overworld theme can get. For example, take the theme you get when your in a crisis and have to hurry. It occurs a lot throughout the game and it does eventually get annoying. It may be just me though.

Addictiveness: OK guys, this game, no, this series as a whole is very addictive. But for Battle Network 5 as a piece well... That's where things start to get tricky. I'm sure many of you share the pain on me with this one. So let's just get this out of the way. The new concept added to this game, the liberation missions are where things start to slow down me. That and the conveyance this game seems to always pull on me.

Come on guys. You all know for a fact the Liberation missions can be such a game stopper. And maybe even a direct turnoff for some. As rage inducing as they are, I can't help but use a guide to escape the pain most people get either from screwing up or from making a mistake. It's the slow down of the game. It's what everyone turns to bash on when criticizing this game, and while i'm not a fan of it myself, I don't hate this concept completely. I can appreciate what they were trying to do with this. I understood where they were trying to go with the liberation missions. But having that said, I am glad that they didn't pull stuff like this on us n Battle Network 6. Apart from that, the game is addictive to almost no end.

Depth: In terms of depth, battle Network 5 has a bit of new things to offer. Besides the whole point of virus busting and net battling, Battle Network 5 has some new things to lay on the table. Well for one, the liberation missions which involve liberating panels while operating your team's Navi's, and defeating a certain boss before your order points run out. Nothing too simple or complicated. But difficult? You hit the nail on the head there.

Another new thing to note about Network 5 is the Double Soul mechanic. After getting to a certain point in the game, you will learn about Double Soul. Which allows you to Unite souls with a Navi on the team by sacrificing a compatible chip. If I were to Unite with Magnet Man, an electric type Navi, I would need to sacrifice an electric chip. Giving me special electric abilities, and power boosts. There are limitations to it like only being available for 3 turns however.

To be honest, there ins't much brought to the table that hasn't already been implemented in previous installments. But with that, we move onto the difficult.

Difficulty: Much unlike previous games, Battle Network 5 isn't really that difficult. Compared to 1, 2, and 3, 5 is kind of a downer. Apart from the liberation missions 5 is pretty easy. So much more difficult and tension were put into the previous installment's, but that doesn't bring down the overall score by a lot. CapCom
could have done better with the level of difficulty especially considering this is a Mega Man game, but I'll let it slide.

Overall score: 8.5
Battle Network 5 was indeed a awesome game to play, and i recommend this game  to anyone who wants to play a Good Game Boy Advance game. It wasn't nearly as good as Battle Network 2 or 3, and things like the liberation missions can't be stressed on enough on how it brought the game down. I still love Battle Network 5 though. Despite the things that brought it down, I think some of you can look past that and see the greatness of it all. So if you want to see how this game fairs with you? Go ahead by all means! Nothings stopping yo now!

This has been Chaoscontrolx and my first review! I hope you all enjoyed my review of MegaMan Battle network 5! Chaos out.

Mega Man Battle Network 5 Team Protoman Game Description

Lan and Mega Man return in the fifth entry to the Battle Network series of games. In this sequel, a mysterious group is distributing Dark Navi chips in the hope of corrupting Navis worldwide. Lan and his friends must storm the Dark Chip Factory and put a stop to this problem before it becomes any worse.

The game uses an RPG style over-world in which Lan and Mega Man navigate and interact. In the real world, you control Lan, and can interact with objects and talk to people. When you need to enter cyberspace, you 'jack-in', and take control of Mega Man. Mega Man must also battle viruses in addition to navigating through the internet. This is done with a combination of action and turn-based battle, where you select powerful chips to give you an edge each turn, then use the chips and dodge shots in realtime.

The game also features Liberation Missions, which are a more traditional turn-based style of play. In this mode, you must 'liberate' dark tiles on your way to confront the boss. Liberation Missions play somewhat like a complicated game of chess, with the player actually fighting the battles between the pieces.

Unique to this version of the game is the ability to play as Protoman partway through the story. The game can also link up to Mega Man Battle Network 5: Team Colonel to trade and complete your battle chip collection - certain chips are only available in one version of the game.
