Possibly the very first port to be made by monkeys!   Drweegee64
Sonic's first game was the first game I ever played. I love the original game and I would consider it to be a classic, like pretty much everyone else. I thought I'd try this version to see if it really is that bad. Take a guess.... Let's examine this "game" shall we?
Graphics-
They look like the original which is all well and good but the game has slowdown absolutely everywhere. I swear, the only time this game runs at a decent speed is when sonic is standing still. I tried this out with the first boss, it was slow and extremely choppy until I put sonic in a corner and just watched Robotnik go back and forth at a good speed. Other than this extremely bad flaw, the graphics I would say are fine.
Sound-
Ahh, don't you just love the sounds of the first sonic game? Well how about hearing a terribly butchered version of every single track in the game? That's right, everything in the sound department sucks, not a single track or sound effect in this game sounds good, apart from star light zone which is decent. Everything just sounds pitiful compared to the original. Remember the crashing (ish) sort of sounds when you destroy the wall in green hill? Well they replaced them with pitiful popping sounds... Did they try at all with this?
Addictiveness-
Yes, I'm SURE anyone that has played this game will love to play this again. With it's awful sound, horrendous slowdown and incredibly bad screen size, this is surely as addictive as Tetris. No, I guarantee that you will not want to play this abomination again, unless you are masochistic.
Story-
What story is there? Robotnik is turning animals into robots to take over the world, sonic has to stop him. What else is there to say? Well at least they didn't make a stupid re-imagining of the plot.
Depth-
The game is the same as the original, 6 zones (not counting final zone), 6 chaos emeralds to get through special stages (which are also completely butchered, what a surprise.) and there is an original mode which is the original game accept with all the lovely features stated earlier in this review and an anniversary mode with the same torture accept you have the spin dash, completely pointless and unnecessary. Now wouldn't you rather play the original, or a port that's actually good?
Difficulty-
I would say the original can be quite hard, but this is even harder because of the games small screen, so you can see practically nothing in front of you, slowdown that could mess up your jumps, and the physics which I'm pretty sure are completely crazy and don't work how they should. Combine these elements and you get a hard to control sonic and a completely anti-fun mess.
Verdict- With all these great features, you would think this game deserves a 10 right? Oh no no no no no no no no. This game deserves a 2, and that me being a bit generous.
Let's recap the bad points and good points shall we?
Bad-
Butchered music, that would make you rather listen to the lovely sounds of nails on a chalkboard.
Messed up physics that would drive Newton to insanity.
Terrible slowdown that may make trying to walk through sonic labyrinth more fun.
Incredibly dumb screen size, I mean, come on, how did they think this was ok?
Pointless anniversary mode.
Just a terrible port of a great game.
Good-
Well star light zones music could be worse.
No incredibly stupid and pointless changes... oh wait, the spin dash, well I guess it has some purpose.
Overall, I would recommend this game if you want to feel annoyed and maybe a little bit sad that this was how they celebrated sonic's 15th. Happy anniversary sonic! Now, let's forget this ever existed.

Sonic Genesis (or the Unexpected Virtue of Incompetence)   TheBWoods15
Man am I going to get a lot of heat for writing this review. But I believe I have a unique opinion of this game, and I would like to share it with the world. I have had my share of rage quits with video games that I found irritating, and almost unplayable. But for some reason I find some room for love in my heart for this under-rated yet sadly over-hated Sonic Anniversary port. I agree that Sonic Genesis has its flaws and is much different from the predecessor it is trying to recreate, however as a game in itself, I find that it has some good qualities that can make it enjoyable. Just enjoyable in a different way than you would find in a standard Sonic game. Please allow me to explain my reasoning as I break down the game, and provide my opinion-driven evidence.
Graphics: I am actually not troubled by the screen crunch and the zoomed-in effect. I feel like it had to be done in order to make the game playable. The SEGA Genesis version had a lot more room for larger scenery, and the size of the screen was based on the size of your Television screen at home. So whether you are playing on a tiny TV the size of a bowling ball, or a huge projector screen, The game would be stretched and shrunk proportionately to the screen's size. And although the Game Gear's screen was small, it was still at least twice as big as the Game Boy Advance's screen. And they could barely fit 8-bit Sonic 1 on the Game Gear let alone the Genesis version if they ever even tried it. The Master System version was a little zoomed out and hard to see, but it was playable. The Game Gear version was a little zoomed in but was still playable. It was just a matter of the player adapting to the differences between versions that helped them enjoy the games better. Apart from being a little absurd, the zoomed-in nature of Sonic Genesis is tolerable for me. For one thing the scenery is much clearer and you can see the detail better. If you notice how smooth and seamless the graphics really are, and how much detail they actually put into each object. It's like looking at a diamond through a microscope, and finding that the smaller details are even more amazing than the ones you see with your naked eye. Also, the screen crunch actually makes the levels a little bit faster. In Marble Zone I could bounce on Buzzbombers seamlessly across the air and reach the entrance to the underground section in seconds. Much faster than in the original version. It tempts you to take leaps of faith that you would never take in the original, since you already see the danger ahead, and the feeling of danger causes you to hold back and not try out certain stunts. And some stunts are even impossible. But in Sonic Genesis those leaps of faith usually reward you with a feat that you never knew Sonic could perform before. For example, right before you reach the boss of Green Hill Zone, there is the tree with the invincibility box in it. In the original version you would have to waste time getting your just pixel-perfect enough to reach the proper height. In Sonic Genesis you can just hop from the ring box in that one tree, bounce on the buzzbomber and then you will just crash right through the invincibility box. The momentum will hurl you all the way to the boss fight, and you won't waste any of the invincibility while running those extra few pixel-feet. And the screen crunch can make platforming smoother, safer, and faster, in some instances. Like in Scrap Brain Zone, I had no problem traversing the platforms that are moving on a conveyor belt above a bottomless pit. I almost over shot one of the platforms. in the original version Sonic would have been going to fast, and plummeted to his doom. But in Sonic Genesis, I was able to slow Sonic down before he toppled over the edge and made it to the end of the act without a single death. What's more, at the part with the red trap doors that open and close there is a sparky electric gizmo and across the way there is a flame shooter. In Sonic Genesis, you are able to jump over those trap doors in a single leap and reach the other side before the flame shooters can even activate. It makes you feel like the most bad-ass person in the world after all the trouble those things gave you in all the other versions of Sonic 1. But that's just the Graphics!
Sound: The music in this game may sound like someone tried to play them on a kazoo, but in a way they are lovable. You are not just hearing the same old music that you heard in every other incarnation of Sonic 1. It is using a low-class Game Boy Advance sound system to recreate music that was originally created for a system that could be hooked up to the TV and had much stronger sound capabilities than any Nintendo products back in the day. SEGA was forced to regress to a crappier sound system when they decided to make Game Boy Advance Sonic games. They were very limited in what they could do, and in my opinion it sounds like they put their all into it. Perhaps the original music sounded even worse, and what they did was only a way to make it better.
Addictiveness: The game feels longer because of the slower pace (which really is not that slow if you are good at the game) so by the time you beat it the first time, it is not likely that you will play it again the same day. But it is the kind of game you might want to put on the shelf, and save for a rainy day. Even if you don't like it, you may still feel an urge to try it again after a while. Personally, I definitely would play this game again, even though it is near the bottom of the list, I would not feel ashamed to come back to it every now and then.
Story: The story is exactly the same as in the original version. In a way Sonic had one of the best stories of all back in the day. Sonic was not running around just to save one princess, he was saving an entire world of helpless animals who were being turned into evil mechanical monsters, by a corrupt, obese human who wanted everything to rule the world, and enslave everyone while wiping their minds of who they were so that they could never free themselves or each other. If that doesn't bring tears to your eyes than you must be heartless.
Depth: However great the story is, the game does not have very much depth, unless you count the watery depths in Labyrinth Zone which have a lot of depth.
Difficulty: I actually found this port quite easy to beat despite the limitations. In fact I found it to be easier than the original version. The only times I died were because of my own stupidity for not holding down the jump button long enough or getting a running start before I tried to jump over a long row of spikes. In Labyrinth Zone, you can move faster in the water than in the original version. Also, the spots that eject bubbles in the air, form them at a faster rate. So if you have only 3 seconds left to get some air, you will be more likely to find an air bubble before you run out of time. In the Final Zone, it is much easier to react to the pistons before they crush you, and you have a better chance of seeing Eggman and jumping to the correct side so that you can hit him. Sometimes you can even hit him twice in one go, which was pretty much impossible in the original version.
Overall: I cannot blame any of you for disliking Sonic Genesis. When you pick up a Sonic game you expect it to be breath-taking and mind-blowing. Especially from a remake. But I just can't help feeling like this game can still be enjoyable. I played through the whole game before I wrote this review, and rather than discouraging me from writing positive things, I actually felt like my opinion became more firm. I do not feel ashamed for liking a video game that is generally disliked. I guess I am just one of a kind.

This must had been 1 sad anniversary. and a bad gift   SuperCrash64
Ok Taking off  Sega finally released that on November 2006 it was sonic's 15th birthday and anniversary for the main sonic fans that had been around. So Sega possibly thought what better way then to release this classic on the go for the fans. But honestly what this ended up in was a epic fail in porting a game and probably a very sad or unhappy anniversary for all the sonic fans that had played sonic since 1991. Enter the Sonic the hedgehog genesis review
Game play. The game play is just really crippled here. Like here.s an example you know how quickly the screen would go green hill zone act 1. That was more likely an example of how fast sonic was is in the original game but in this port the screen goes about 25 or 50 percent slower. So seeing that is defiantly not a good sign at all unfortunately it is true. Sonic is more slowed down than usual. As usual people know that in the original sonic game he was just a bit slow so the players controlling him would be able to respond rightfully and properly. But in this port I don't know what happened at all. All I know is  the game play is very slow. Its not all bad in the beginning but when you start getting to places. You know where you start smashing stuff. It starts to get frustrating on here it takes about a minute or 2 to finally get done smashing those bricks or whatever they are  were in the first game it would only take a few seconds.now don't get me wrong but Sega has ported sonic over many plat formers including the ipod and what not. So theres no really excuse for them how they managed to mess this up considering the gba is like a combination of a snes and genesis.  plus Sega made the sonic advanced series and he was fast as the first genesis game.  only real change in actual way besides sonic being slower. Is they added anniversary mode  and you only get to do a spin dash in the levels like in sonic the hedgehog 2 . So really besides sonic being slower they really made no difference to the game play at all.
Graphics  Now in most port overs of a original game . The graphics gets ported nearly perfect. But unfortunately in this port of the original sonic the hedgehog is not the case. The reason why is some reason Sega cropped off  half of the backgrounds. Either because of screen limitations or to give sonic a close up your guess is good as mine.  But besides that theres not much to differ from this and the original sonic. But unfortunately Sega cutting off half of the backgrounds. Makes it very hard to see where certain enemies like the robot bettle. Its hard to see where they fire they can fire at any time any place and theres no certain way in this port to see it while your going further down in some level parts even the ending is screwed up in this port where you know how sonic would return all chaos emeralds. And he would appear in the main front of the screen. The flowers in the background got completely removed. Graphics gets a 6 while not my natural rating its at least decent

Sound again in most ports overs of a original game the sound is also nearly perfect. Again unfortunately once more this is not the case for this port of Sonic the hedgehog 1.   While your main jumping sounds are here some of the other sounds got chopped off aka removed. You will notice this when your  at the boss known as eggman/robotink he had 2 sound effects and that's when you start jumping at him and breaking his machinery  so 1 of those sounds have gotten removed. Even when your breaking or crashing through certain objects there is sometimes no sound when doing such things if you think that's bad you got another thing coming. Soundtrack  again don't get me wrong we had seen all Mario and donkey Kong games while having their music compressed.it was nearly not that fair from their original super Nintendo counterparts.so you think that the sonic the hedgehog 1 music would be nearly perfect unfortunately  I would say think again. Most of the music is just really messed up has they have been alerted or tried to be remixed with tiny game boy loops. And when you want to listen to classic music like. The green hill zone or others it would not sound nearly as great as the originals. Sound gets a 3 bad lack of original sounds and the music somehow got really messed up.
Addictiveness. Honestly I would just not really play this port cause there are many other versions aka ports of the original sonic 1 that has been perfect. The main reason is the challenge of the game and enjoying the adventure game and bashing through stuff it was boat loads of fun. But sadly this port has sonic slow so that's why I would not play this. Addictiveness would get a 3 in my case.
Story. This being a port of the original sonic 1 the story is the same so I will explain it. Your sonic the hedgehog  and your supposed to save the world and all forest animals from being turned into robots from eggman.so you go through various levels  and defeat egg man. Storyline gets a 5 natural rating for dupe stories.
Depth again being a port this has all the same stuff sonic 1 offered but with the anniversary/spin dash mode. It offers a lot of levels to go through you can get chaos emeralds. And beat robotink of course  the game is longer do to sonic being slower and the game its self being pretty slow.Depth would get a 10 if this is a game your looking to be pretty long lasting this would be for that person. So its slightly longer than the original being the game itself is slower.
Difficulty 10 bad case of difficulty here. Because of the game being so slow and backgrounds being chopped off aka removed. It makes it hard to avoid some of the glitches that are coming your way. When you are in that star zone where you escape the bomb you wont make it properly escaped you will still end up dieing to do glitches of background removal and slowness of the game. And as I mentioned before the cropped backgrounds makes enemies that shoot projectiles very hard to see. So theres about a lot of chances your gonna get killed or lose rings. Without even knowing it
Overall . This was a failure attempt at making sonic the hedgehog 1 on the go. If your looking to play sonic 1 on vizzed just use the original game through the rgr plug in. Or download an emulator on your phone or psp yes psp cause certain people hack it to get emulators on it. Just avoid this game at all cost. Ratings 5.5. More reviews to come

Sonic Genesis- Review (WHY? WHY? WHY?)   dazzsheil
WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY IN THE NAME OF GOD DOES THIS EXIST? Sonic the Hedgehog: Genesis is an attempt to port the classic SEGA Mega Drive game, Sonic the Hedgehog,  to a system that is- on a technical standpoint- more powerful than the Mega Drive, the Nintendo Game Boy Advance. Released in 2006 to celebrate Sonic's 15th anniversary alongside Sonic Riders and Sonic the Hedgehog for the PS3 and 360 (and we all know how amazing Sonic '06 was *SARCASM*), Sonic Genesis just PURE SUCKED. It's probably the worst attempt at a port of any game I've ever seen. "Oh, but you can Spin Dash dazzsh-" SHUT UP. That doesn't change anything. Ayways, onto my review of this "game"
------------------------------------
The game feels totally different from the 16-bit version. The basic controls are the same, A or B to jump and the D-Pad to move, so at least the input is the same from the original (Well, sort of. The GBA does have a different D-Pad and buttons to the Mega Drive). There's a new mode called "Anniversary Mode" and simply put it's basically Sonic 1 with a Spin-Dash. AND IT SUCKS. The Spin-Dash adds nothing to the game and you can't even increase the speed of it by Spamming the button. The physics are wacked out because this game uses the Sonic Advance engine, which would be fine IF THE LEVEL DESIGN WAS COMPATIBLE WITH SAID ENGINE. The screen crunch is MASSIVE, the biggest problem being that Sonic retains his original pixel count from the first game, instead of re-sizeing him to the proper resolution for the GBA'S screen. The slooooowdooown is also another big issue. It's not as though a system that came out in 2001 can't handle a game that came out 10 years before hand! "It's missing Blast processing!" Oh, it can handle the Blast Processing, I just think Sonic Team got lazy :P
------------------------------------
The Mega Drive Sonic games are well known for their colour's and details. I love the environments in Sonic 1 and they hold up well in Sonic Genesis. With the exception of a static Waterfall in one of Labryinth Zone's acts, the graphics are fine. Loses points for being crunched into the GBA'S Screen, in which the pixels on Sonic's body look a bit more noticeable. The animatoins are okay, although more sluggish thanks to the massive slowdown.
-------------------------------------
The game's sound is butchered beyond belief. There's one good song, and one good jingle. That's it. Star Light Zone and the Act Clear theme are the only good songs in the entire game although they're working off the GBA Soundfont, which is kinda understandable but it's not a good excuse for a destruction of all the songs you loved as a child. Seriously, don't put your Headphones on. Your ears will bleed, cry and do everything else painful.
-------------------------------------
I'm not exactly addicted to this game and I'm damn well sure that alot of you aren't eiether. I mean, it's Sonic the Hedgehog. You've played it a bajillion times before this surely you're not going to play the worst version of it AGAIN are you? If you did you deserve a medal. Anyways, not very addicting, nor will it ever be addicting.
-------------------------------------
Sonic must go through six areas of South Island, destroy all the robotocisors and defeat the Evil Dr. Ivo Robonik (also known as Eggman in Japan) to rescue the Flickies and save South Island. You've played this story a million times before, not very original, but it works for Sonic well....I guess. Just to let you know, anniversary mode does not change the story :P
-------------------------------------
The game is only about 2 hours long and in order to 100% it you have to collect six, not seven but six Chaos Emeralds to unlock the sound effects in the new Jukebox, just so you can destroy your ears once more. It's not very deep but it has some replay value, not that you'd want to replay such a horrible travesty of a game but still.
-------------------------------------
Normally Sonic the Hedgehog is a fairly average game in the difficulty area because it gets progressively harder as you go along but because the game has a horrible screen crunch, wacked out physics and horrible Slowdown, the game drags on and you can't see what's above you or what's ahead of you and enemies decide to pop in at the most inopportune moment to break the flow of the game and it just gets too much. Don't get me started on Labryinth Zone's boss and Scrap Brain Zone Act 3. They are just too difficult (Well, Act 3 of Scrap Brain is technically the last level in the game so I guess it's kinda alright for it to be impossible) and I hate them.
------------------------------------
So, would I reccomend Sonic the Hedgehog: Genesis to anybody looking for some Sonic 1 on the Go?  No. If you want some Sonic 1 on the go there's the SEGA Mega Drive collection on PSP and the Sonic Classic Collection on Nintendo DS. In conclusion, Sonic Genesis is one of the worst Sonic games ever made, It's up there with Labryinth, Sonic '06, Sonic Spinball (Game Gear) and Sonic Blast (Not 3D Blast, just plain 'ol Sonic Blast for the Game Gear). It tales a poop on one of the greatest games of all time. Don't waste your money or time on it.
Dazzsheil's score: 4.5 out of a possible 10

They Say That Lightning Never Strikes Twice...   acam

Sonic Genesis Review

They say lightning never strikes twice. However, certain events wind up proving that statement as hit or miss at best. One such event concerns the decisions of one such game developer, Sonic Team, and their decision making in 2006. This review concerns one of the two biggest mistakes these guys made with SEGA’s mascot ant their namesake, Sonic the Hedgehog. Before I get ahead of myself, a little background is in order first. Sonic Genesis was released in November 2006 for the GBA.

The graphics are great… if you can ignore the constant frame rate problems and what’s known as “screen crunch”. An example of this can be found in the Marble Zone level. There, the screen is so condensed that it is very easy to wind up crushed by spiked chandlers or burned by flowing lava. As for the frame rate drops, those are much more obvious. Just try to pick up any speed, and the game slows to a crawl. In a Sonic game, this is downright unacceptable!

The sound is abysmal. Sure the ring sound is there, but every other sound is nearly unrecognizable. The music is unbearable and will make you want to turn off the sound on your GBA system. Other sounds, such as hitting an enemy or even jumping, are of poor quality as well.

There really is no addictiveness rating for this game. You’d be better off playing the original somehow, anyway. This game’s difficulty is much harder than it should be, mostly due to all of the things that you have to put up with.

All in all, I would never recommend this game, no matter who it is that I am talking to. It’s just that bad. Did I mention that Sonic’s momentum is screwed up in this game, too? Good going, Sonic Team (sarcasm).

Sonic the Hedgehog-Genesis(Gameboy Advance) review   G@mehe@d
Not to be confused with the original Genesis classic. Sonic Genesis was a horrible port of the original Sonic the Hedgehog to the Gameboy Advance. Not only is it sloppy and unacceptable, but its also border line unplayable. Heck, this game makes Sonic 06' look like a classic.
Gameplay F: I know this is harsh, but its completely accurate. The physics in the original, is what made the game great. Take that away, and replace with horrible physics and you're left with a crappy game. Sonic moves at a very choppy, and unbalanced pace. Its difficult to make jumps with these god awful controls. Things just appear right in front of you due to the limited visibility. The only time the game moves at a steady pace, is at the special stage. In anniversary mode. You can do the spin dash, but like the rest of the game, it moves at a jittery pace. I hate to be this harsh, but its the solid truth. Don't give empathy to the Gameboy Advance, because it runs the Sonic Advance series at a much faster, yet steady speed.
Graphics B: Despite the horrible gameplay, the graphics look exactly like their Genesis counterparts. All the lush scenery, and detailed, colorful visuals are here. Despite a few graphical glitchs. If you took a screenshot of the game, you would think this game is a faithful port, turns out its not.
Sound D: I liked the original soundtrack for Sonic the Hedgehog, but Sega took it to themselves to change the music. Instead of the electronic sounds of the Genesis. We get the muffled scratchy instruments of the Gameboy Advance, and tell you what they sound terrible. The sound effects are also off pitch.
Replay Value/addictivness F: There is no reason why you should go back to this game, better yet play it for a long time. Its just not as fun as the original. There is an anniversary mode, but all it adds is a spin-dash.
Depth B+: All the original levels are here, as well as a few welcome features. A stage select, saving, and a new spin-dash are nice to have, but not really necessary. The level select is nice though. Considering in the original you had to enter a cheat code or start over. I still feel like Sega would add more.
Difficulty Hard: Even being a Sonic master I had a hard time beating this ugly fart. Its not challenge. Its cheap unfair difficulty. The horrable controls, and wonky physics along make this game harder then it needs to be.

Sonic Genesis: Oh boy..   pacman1755
This game, though. Oh, man. This game I had to force myself to make a little review for. I wanted to make one back when I was looking for a mere Review Maker staff position, but couldn't get around to it since the game is so bad. This, in my opinion, is one of the WORST games that Sonic has ever starred in, without a doubt. The game was a glorified easy money project, compared to the other hand held projects Sega gotten, and now I'm going to exploit my opinions of the monstrosity of a port. Now, let's dive right into this game.
Difficulty: 10
Firstly, I do think that the difficulty has both eased itself, but more so gotten really unfair, and that one reason is screen crunch. It is horrendously bad, and more often than not, you will not see anything that will come towards you, and that is a pain in every zone in the game. All of them. Especially in some bosses like in Labyrinth Zone, which you don't know what's going to hit you, Eggman or spikes coming right at you, and this can be rage enduring. It kinda ruins the game on it's own.
Depth: 4
The Depth isn't really changed from the original game, so I didn't really change much, and it is just as short as the original. Just a handful of zones, but the slowdown the game has makes the game a bit longer than it should. I believe that the stuff that they did is pretty much exactly the same thing as you did play it on the Sega Genesis.
Story: 5
Again, the story is the same as the original, Dr. Ivo Robotnik, or Eggman, is gathering critters to have them as robot slaves to have him power up a Death Egg, and Sonic must stop him before he unleashes his weapon of mass destruction. I think the Emerald collecting, which is extremely easy compared to the challenge you had on the Genesis, is quite different. You can get it without a sweat, since it's still plot heavy with Eggman.
Addictiveness: 1
You couldn't have torchured me to play this game like I did. The game not only has slow-down and screen crunch, it has a real bad case of motion sickness. Not the case where I feel I'm going to vomit, but the case that I get a splitting headache of the constant speed up and slow down. The game was made in the Sonic Advance engine, which can't handle so many objects on screen, and it lagged, terribly. It kills me. This is only half the reason I hate this game.
Sound: 2
The music got butchered. Point blank, the remixes they do for the game is absolutely terrible. It doesn't mix at all. The signature music that most of us have grown up with, is now a gargled mess of nothing. It's quite disgusting. However, I'll give it credit, they made...superior remixes exclusive if you beat the game, which is stupid. But that's what they did. Meh. That's the only reason it's a 2 instead of a 1. And with that, is the second half of why I hate this game.
Graphics: 7
Thankfully, they didn't butcher this part of the game. They basically recycled the sprites and everything to go with it from the original. Except the internal mechanics and music. Speaking of mechanics, they also have an Anniversary edition, which brings the spin dash to the game, where it makes most obstacles your whipping boy. Places you weren't suppose to go is now to your disposal. It's pretty broken.
Overall: 4.9
Pretty terrible overall. You can definitely say that most of the categories have pretty much butchered the game that should have been fixed. Luckily, I have heard that someone out there fixed the game with hacks, and actually made this game playable, which sounds amazing. If only Sega did something like that instead of barely trying. Oh well. Just another failed project.
All in all, the game is bad and should be avoided, unless you feel like daring somebody to play it. I'm sure you can buy this in a local store for maybe $5, and if you do, good luck playing that without an emulator. But if you do decide to play it, hey, I won't stop you. Just as long as you don't really get robbed from what you should pay for the game. Enjoy, if you can.

WORST SONIC GAME EVER MADE!   boomerman67
NOW HERE I PRESENT TO YOU THE WORST SONIC GAME EVER MADE...WORSE THEN SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG AND IT'S WORSE THEN SONIC 2006! OH YEA I JUST SAID THAT!!!!
Graphics: well the sprites and the other animations are ripped from the original game so..........it's ok
Sound: Now this is sad and truly shows how much effort Sega put in making this port because the music is horrible...spring yard zone.....what have they done to you?...But still I guess star light zone's music isn't that bad.....Anyways this is horrible and you would think that a 32 bit handheld could produce better sound then a 16 bit console. And one last thing....the sound effect's are vary limited  in this port and you will here one sound effect used for many different things
Addictiveness: unless your one of those people that go out of their way to play s*** (like me) then you should stay away from this at all costs this game is not worth it. I find this game just hard to replay and it's vary rare when i do replay it.
Story: the story is the exact same like it was from the classics. Defeat the evil Dr.Robotnik.
Depth: This game offers nothing and you would think for a anniversary title it would be a amazing game but no. And yea i could take a while to beat. And beware of marble and labyrinth zone because you will be losing lives left and right .
Difficulty: In term of difficulty this game is cheap and low quality the physics and momentum are messed up which can make the game extremely hard at time's and just overall harder then the original.
Overall: this game deserves to die in a horrible fire and dose not deserve to be a anniversary title for sonic 15th anniversary and here's a fun fact about this game....Sega used the same physics engine from sonic advance 1 and what did it do the game? well it made it into the worst sonic game in Sega history.

Sonic I am disappointed at thee for this horrid game.   Azul Fria
This is just going to be a quick review since my net has been shotty all month. You are playing as Sonic as an effort to save your friends from the evil Ivo Robotnik who has turned them into machines.

Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis for the Game Boy Advance is a real horrid game meant to be an anniversary tribute to the first Sonic the Hedgehog game but it comes with lots of errors in it that makes this game unplayable at sometimes. One point you are running and the camera will fail to catch up to you in time.
OVERALL - F-

Like I said I decided to keep this review short and sweet and I did not bother to rate all the graphics, sound, controls, etc. That should already tell you alone that this game is a bunch of horse manure. I just decided to cut to the chase and give the game a rating of F- because while it is possible to go above A++ by using S's, I cannot give a lower grade than F-. I don't think U's really count much of a failing game but you know what I'll rate replayability just for fun.

REPLAYABILITY - F-

I rather have diarrhea **** in my ear than play this game ever again.

Not of that games...please   ximex
Really does this thing has to exist there are too much ports even on the Genesis! Also it is a game everybody knows and maybe has beaten so let's start with somethings of why i hate this game
Graphics
I don't complain too much about this because it is a port from the Genesis but here is a problem...IT'S ALL ZOOMED IN just check it i mean the GBA had a small screen and you can't see anything going on but why not making the sprites smaller.
Sound
Just why...just hear, did the Sonic Advance series sounded like this?, i don't think so.
Controls
They are very slippery and not well coded, for example if you let out your finger from the right arrow on the D-pad Sonic usually keeps going right without you pressing any button.
All i have to say it's that it is horrible and incomparable with the Genesis and other ports.

Sonic Genesis And Why I Think It's Actually A Good Game   gamergal9000
To be completely honest, I like this game. Bad sounds? Please, I've heard worse from E.T. for the Atari. And you guys need to look past the graphics and sound and try to realize that it was a game boy they had to make it work SOMEHOW! So stop bashing on this game and bash on Sonic 06 or something!
Overall - 9
I thin k that even though this game is really just a copy of the original Sonic the Hedgehog, it's still a good game in its general aspect. And also SEGA tried their best on the small game boy screen. That and, weren't they rushed to make this game and Sonic 06? Since they were both released on, I think, the same day.
Graphics - 7
I think these were actually pretty decent graphics, especially for the game boy. And once again, even though it's mainly just a copy of the original Sonic the Hedgehog, they still tried. They were also working on Sonic 06 as well and they were rushed! So don't go bashing at SEGA! Bash at the guys who rushed SEGA to finish these two games!
Sound - 10
The music and sound effects hurt your ears huh? Weird how they didn't hurt mine. Oh wait of course it didn't because in my opinion, this game has a really great soundtrack. Again, way better then E.T. for the Atari, that game was worse than Sonic 06! Anyways the soundtrack is actually a great soundtrack, again my opinion. Why do I think it's a great soundtrack? It's because I've had the game over and special stage themes stuck in my head for a couple of months now, that's how catchy I think the soundtrack is!
 Addictiveness - 8
I think this game is pretty addicting. Except for Labyrinth Zone. I always hated Labyrinth Zone.... Even though the slowdown makes the game move slower, I think that in some ways it actually helps you see where you're going to land after you jump. And if Sonic keeps running even though you want him to stop, all you have to do is jump he'll stop right where he's at in the air and then lands there and stays there until you get him to move again. It's that simple! No offense to any of you but, I think you guys complain a little too much, again no offense.
Story - 6
Same as the original Sonic the Hedgehog. In my opinion, they could have at least added something else like Tails or Knuckles or even Amy into the mix. So I think they could have spiced it up just a little along with the Spin Dash in the Anniversary Mode.
Depth - 5
Game is not that big. Again it's just a copy of the original Sonic the Hedgehog so there's not much I can say about it really. They could have at least added a bonus zone or something because in my opinion it feels like it has lots off things missing.
Difficulty - 3
The game really isn't that hard, especially if you can handle the controls and slowdown well. And if you play the Anniversary Mode and use the Spin Dash, it only makes the game a little more easy. So it's fine for people who like to time their jumps and play as the fastest thing alive, the blue blur himself, Sonic the Hedgehog.
If you guys seriously think the game is THAT bad, don't blame it on me. I'm just saying my opinion on this game and why I think it's pretty decent. So don't troll or bash on me or anything. That and this is my first review so please take it easy, I'm still a... *sigh* Newbie.

This game = bad fail!   Stevie 764
How about remaking the classic sonic games from the genesis and remake onto the GBA? This stupid game that is mostly trash.
Graphics - 6
The graphics got completely copied from the original game, it looks ok, but not as good as the original game.
Sound - 2
The sound is absolutely horrible, the sounds and music can hurt your ears if you listen, so it's best to mute the game when you're playing!
Addictiveness - 3
You mostly won't play it again since this game contains many bad physics and is not a good game.
Story - 5
The story is the same as the original, robotnik captures flickies and turns them into robots blah blah blah.
Depth - 6
This game has the same number of zones: 7. They lacked extra zones and stuff!? Except for one thing, to increase the depth and replay value, since this game is sonic's 15th anniversary, sega only added just a spin dash which is broken as nails!
Difficulty - 10
This game is even harder than the original game because:
•Bad physics
•Trashy Programming
•SMALLER SCREEN!
Overall - 4
This game is just absolute trash, all because of bad music, bad sounds, bad physics, awful programming, and other stuff. Throw this game in the trash if you have this game, PLEASE! That is why the game is horrible!
Overall Rating: F- for Epic Fail! Do you not believe in me? Play the game yourself, all of this review will come true.
Experiences:
I remember getting in 2007 or 2008 and I thought, could this be a fun game? I played it and after 3 years, I got all the info I needed on this game, and ALL of it is filled with actual horribleness of video game programming! If you don't believe in me, play this game again and again and again until you believe in me. I couldn't imagine how bad it turned out, you have a broken spin dash which is broken to its full potentinal, a useless sound test unlockables menu, bad physical gameplay, terrible ear piercing music and sound, I just can't stand it enough! The music sounds like it got degenerated, degraded, it is just awful.
Do not get this game, all it does is blow your money away and wastes your time and will make you rage like mad! This isn't just my opinion, lots of other people day it's terrible and it should get trashed, NO KIDDING!

Unplayable Game!   luigi25

Sonic the Hedgehog was originally released for the Sega Genesis in 1991. It was a game I never got to play as my own growing up. I played it at a friend's house, but even then it was rarely ever played. They mainly played Sonic 2 and other games such as: Mortal Kombat. I felt like the first Sonic game didn't offer as much as what the other games in the series offered (mainly Sonic 2 and how that one really kick started the franchise). Later on in the '90s and 2000s, Sonic would lose a lot of its popularity. Games such as: Sonic Boom, Shadow, and Sonic '06 all had reputations for being bad.

But somehow, the first Sonic game was re-released on the Gameboy Advance of all consoles? A Sega game ported to handheld Nintendo game console in November 2006 around the same time Sonic '06 came out which was panned by critics. How bad was this game going to be? It turned out to be pretty bad!

Graphics 3/10: The original Sonic game on the Sega Genesis was a beautiful game. It pushed the 16-bit home console to the limit, and this was only just the beginning. Still, the first game had a lot of detail and color to it. Sonic Genesis (the version ported to the GBA) has plenty of detail and color to it as well. However, the camera is zoomed in so far, you can't even see what's going on! This makes a great looking game look pretty awful! Even though, this is a nice looking game, Sonic takes up the whole screen, and there is no emphasis put on any of the other backgrounds or sprites. So, you get a game that looks like crap!! Thumbs down!

Music 0/10: Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis sounded fantastic, and it was only just the beginning. The later games would sound even better, but the first one was still pretty amazing. When this game was ported over to the GBA, the soundtrack really went to hell!! WHAT HAPPENED!!??? THIS GAME SOUNDS LIKE SOMEONE IS ON THE TOILET TAKING A DUMP!! I CAN'T FIND ONE GOOD SONG IN THE WHOLE GAME!! Another thumbs down!!

Gameplay 0/10: The object of this game is the same as before. Sonic races through the levels to get to the end before time runs out and collects rings along the way. Although, none of that even matters in this version because of all the damn slowdown!! THE FACT THAT THIS GAME WAS EVEN RELEASED AT ALL AMAZES ME!! THERE IS NO WAY TO IMPROVE OR GET FASTER BECAUSE SONIC KEEPS SLOWING DOWN AND SPEEDING UP SO RANDOMLY THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE GAME!! This also makes the stages drag out way longer than they should. What was a 3 or 4 minute stage in the original version, is now a 15 to 20 minute stage in the GBA version!! NNNOOOOOO!!!!!

Why even bother with the special stages? There is no way to even play them!! The controls are terrible to the point where you'll always fall into the Goal!! Reaching the end of the level with 50 rings is impossible to do because you'll keep taking damage from enemies due to: bad controls, poor visibility, and God-awful slowdown. Basically, everything you knew and loved about the original Sonic the Hedgehog has been flushed down the toilet in this version! The object of the game may be the same, but there is no way to improve or get faster in the GBA port of Sonic 1. There is too much: screen crunch, slowdown and speed up, bad controls, etc. Don't play this version! It sucks!

Story 6/10: The storyline for the GBA version of Sonic the Hedgehog is the same as in the Genesis version. Dr. Robotnik has kidnapped Sonic's animal friends and plans on turning them into robots. The game takes place on South Island, and Sonic races through the island to confront Robotnik in his Scrap Brain Zone. The plot is the same as in the Genesis version and is one of the more positive aspects of this remake. Although, it was only the start of the Sonic series and wasn't as developed as the storylines for the later Sonic games. Sega was still experimenting with the characters in 1991.

Content 7/10: This remake has the same amount of content that the original game had. Nothing new has been added to this version other than Anniversary Mode which is no different from the Original Mode. What was the point of this? I don't know! Anyway it only includes 6 zones: Green Hill, Marble Zone, Spring Yard Zone, Labyrinth Zone, Star Light Zone, and Scrap Brain Zone. There isn't much to the first game, and it can be finished in little under an hour.

Difficulty 10/10: I don't even know where to begin with this part! I think that this is a game that can't be beat! I can't get any further than Star Light Zone! The see-saws don't work and neither do the fans. I can't get through this part! Not only that, there is so much slowdown and inconsistency in Sonic's movement that makes it impossible to even play the game!! This is especially true in Labyrinth Zone which is another area that feels impossible. Mainly, the boss stage where Sonic has to climb the wall of doom with the water rising! I have made it through that section but only once. Then, I got to Star Light Zone and RAGE QUIT!!

I KEEP FALLING DOWN AND HAVE TO GET BACK TO THE TOP PATH WHICH TAKES SO MUCH TIME!! IT MAKES A SLOW GAME EVEN SLOWER!! I JUST GAVE UP ON THIS VERSION!! IT TAKES TOO LONG AND THERE IS NO WAY TO IMPROVE YOUR GAME!!! Stay away from this version of Sonic.

Overall 3.2/10: I wanted to play this game more times before writing a review for it, but I couldn't do it. Sonic the Hedgehog for the Gameboy Advance is one of those games (aside from some Super Mario Bros. hacks) that I just can't play. There is almost no movement in this version. All the characters move so slow! By the time I got to Labyrinth Zone, it was unplayable! I wanted to play this version, but there is no way to do it! The way it is so slow, the depressing music, poor controls, etc. make this game too much to stomach! I GIVE IT A BIG THUMBS DOWN!!!

This Game Started The Dark Age Of Sonic   WaysideFan2002
November 2006,Sega decided to celebrate Sonic's 15th anniversery. They released 4 Sonic games in 2006,those games were Sonic 2006 for Xbox 360 and PS3,Sonic Riders for PS2,Xbox (Original),Gamecube, and PC,Sonic Rivals for the Sony PlayStation Portable (A.K.A Sony PSP),
Only two of these were good,Sonic Riders and Sonic Rivals, but the fourth one is a port of Sonic 1......ugh..........This is Sonic The Hedgehog-Genesis For the Nintendo Game Boy Advance.
Graphics-6
The sprites are the same as the original classic from 1991.They looked nice, and were animated fine. But the backgrounds spazz out and flicker some time, and the screen is like zoomed-in and locked-on to Sonic, which is a major problem, you can run into a Motobug or a Buzz Bomber without knowing.
Sound-3
The music is the same as the original Genesis version!Yay!Except it's crap and ruined now.Sonic Pinball Party,Sonic Battle,AND Sonic Advance 1,2,and 3 had amazing music!Sonic Advance 1 had remixes of the Genesis songs in the sound test, and Sonic Pinball Party Had a remix of a song from Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast! The music here is crap!It makes the GBA Sound clip look like crap.
Addictiveness-1
I don't even need to say it do I.Well fine okay,You will play Sonic 2006 more than this! And That game sucks too!
Story-N/A
There is not story except that Dr.Robotnik is evil,he turns animals into his evil badniks,Sonic must stop him.
Depth-7
This game is big! It's even bigger because the terrible glitches and the slow down!
Difficulty-10
This game is mega hard! There is a lot of massive slow down and speed-ups!And The controls feel sloppy unlike the genesis version.
Overall-3.9
This game started the Bad Age Of Sonic Game which lasted to when this game came out In late 2006,until 2009!Luckily,Sonic came back to his roots in 2010.Overall,there is no reason to play this version. As of 2013,this game is on Genesis,Sega Saturn,Sega Dreamcast,Gamecube,PS2,Xbox (Original),Wiiware,PS3,Xbox 360,Nintendo DS,PSP,and it comes with Sonic Generations.Play one of those ports, this one sucks.

They screwed up a port?   Itachi9695
I know what you're thinking. "Didn't you review Sonic the Hedgehog back in November? Why are you reviewing a port of this game?" I have two reasons. One; I needed to review another game for Sonic Rage Month (Or rather Months now). Two; THIS IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST EXCUSE FOR A PORT I'VE EVER LAID EYES ON! *ahem* Sorry about that, this "month" is centered around rage right? Anyway, welcome back to Sonic Rage Month, which has now become an event lasting far longer than a month. Let's take a look at how this game came to be. Back in 2006, there was a game that most people call "Sonic '06" released in "celebration" of Sonic's 15th Anniversary. But, as we all know, the game was very poorly received. However, there was another game released on the same day, this one. This game was released as a port of Sonic 1 on the Genesis, hence the title, but ended up being a poorly programmed mess of a game that I am now about to pick apart piece by painful piece.
Graphics
While the sprites are exactly the same as the original, the screen is not. The screen is zoomed in so far that you barely have enough time to react to an obstacle or enemy that just happens to show up. Why couldn't they have just made the screen smaller to compensate? The zoomed in screen makes it really difficult to see anything. What were carefully timed jumps in the original have become leaps of faith in this port. It's mind-boggling just how much they screwed up even in just this one section. Warning: My complaints are FAR from over.
Sound
You know how most of the time I could just pass over this section in a heartbeat by saying "It's a Sonic the Hedgehog game"? Unfortunately, this is one scenario where I cannot do that. The music in this game is absolutely horrendous. Every zone got it's own little garbage remix. Well, Star Light Zone was o.k., but even that can't save this game's soundtrack. The sound effects have also been severely butchered and turned into ear-grating noise. Even the jumping noise is annoying. Now granted the Game Boy Advance doesn't necessarily have the greatest sound quality ever, but I've heard some pretty good mixes of Sonic 1 music in the Sonic Advance series. Basically, the sound quality is absolutely atrocious and isn't worthy of being called a Sonic soundtrack.
Addictiveness
The only time you'll be coming back to this game is maybe for a Let's Play or review. I don't have much to say here because this game is not addicting in the slightest. I really wish I had more to say here, but I don't so...moving on!
Story
The story is the exact same story as Sonic 1, I mean, it IS a "port". But for the few that don't know, there's a mad scientist named Dr. Eggman (or Robotnik, I really don't care) who decides to take over the world by kidnapping little woodland creatures and trapping them inside robots. Sonic finds out about this and sets of to find Eggman in order to stop his plans for world conquest. It's just enough for you to know what you're doing and why you're doing it. It's pretty basic, yet effective.
Depth
I'll admit that this game has a bit more to offer than the original. You now have two game modes instead of one, Original and Anniversary. The Original Mode is just like what it sounds, it's the original Sonic 1, just not as awesome. Anniversary Mode is basically Original Mode with a spin dash. There's also a sound test available without the use of cheats, but why would you want to listen to this game's soundtrack? It's not much, but if it was done right, it would've been awesome.
Difficulty/Gameplay and Control
Where do I begin? I guess the physics are first on this chopping block. The physics are terrible! Sonic's jump feels so awkward and even moving can be a pain. But I think the main reason for difficulty lies within this game's frame rate. There are maybe, MAYBE, a couple of times where the frame rate is similar to the original, but for the most part, it's up and down and all around. (Anyone get it?) There are times where the frame rate will be super slow, then immediately decide to go faster than the original. The Special Stages though, are something completely different. Sonic decides that he now wants to go through these pretty quickly AND speeds up the process of breaking the crystals surrounding the Chaos Emerald. The control has been butchered too, though mostly due to the terrible frame rate. I don't think I have to explain how to play a classic Sonic game at this point, so I'm going to stop here for now.
Overall, this is one game that only pure curiosity should ever make you pick up and play. It's a very bad port of a very good game, so it is definitely one of the absolute worst games in the Sonic franchise. Is it the worst? No. That title is reserved for next game I review that will wrap up Sonic Rage "Month". Until then, peace out!

really not that good of game to a 15th anniversary of sonic   Thundergod99
Graphics  there nearly idecental to  the genesis original  only difference is the backgrounds were chopped off to give sonic a close up now  for most gba games didn't have that so in otherwords the graphics just seem alright but kind of lazy
Sound alest 55 percent of the sound is gone you  notice that later on when your breaking stuff  and the soundtrack is just freaking ruined
the soundtrack was used with tiny gameboy bloops its just not that enjoyable anymore
Addictiveness this game is  just slowed down too begin with  the game had so much lag later on like when your on scrap brain zone
and to make matters even worse it has alot of glitches in it too like when you avoid the trap by the enemies your still going to get killed
Story Well is a port of the original genesis so the story is exactly the same thing
Depth doesn't offer anything new expect anniversary mode witch allows you to do a spin dash
Difficulty with glitches and lag it makes the game very hard to beat but not impossible
Overall I'm just curios how they messed this up  I mean heck we already played sonic advance  on gba so its no excuse why Sega messed this up
honestly I think it could have been better if Sega worked harder  but for now I give the game a 6.5 so its alright

Sonic At His Worst.   daryl96
Overall: 1
This is worst than Sonic 06. The game was made to try and undo the damage Sonic 06 did and well it made it much worst. This is the most lazy port of Sonic 1. Sega should be ashamed to publish this. Sonic 10th anniversary was celebrated by Sonic Adventure 2 a good game, so what happened here for the 15th.
Graphics: 7
The game looks great, not as good as the Mega Drive one but still look good. The animations are pretty good as well. They really hit the nail on the head with this and kept the style of game play. But that is it, the only thing that makes this games worth playing. So stay with the other ports.
Sound: 2
The music is terrible and will hurt your ears. The music you know and love, have been butchered and hurt a lot. I love Starlight Zones music, but when I herd it on the gba I was annoyed at how bad it sound. The music is bad as whole. After you here it, you will want to here the 16-bit any other port or remix of the levels music to make you feel better.
Addictiveness: 1
This game is not as addictive as the other ports, while the other ports you will want to play and play again, this one will make you not want to touch it again and put it a box to never be played again. At time you had no choice but now you would never play it.
Story:
1
The Story has not been touch at all, the story is that Robotnik as taken all of animals of South Island and its up to save all of the woodland creatures and make the world a happier place. The Chaos Emeralds only change the ending in this game and there is no super Sonic.
Depth: 2
This would higher if was doing the original sonic 1. There nothing special l to keep you playing. There 2 versions of the game; Original mode and anniversary mode which only adds the spin dash which is pointless and I cant see why they cant add it to the original game. There a juke box which if have the gift of hearing you won't want.
Difficulty: 7
The is much harder than any other Sonic 1 port, why? The SLOWDOWN its everywhere and always gets bad when the you don't want it to be. Scarp Brain a level when there so much happening the game becomes so slow. If the slowdown was not that bad it would be playable.
Sonic on the gba is the worst Sonic game ever. With this being the only Sonic 1 on the go in 2006 is was good. Now there's a psp and a Nintendo ds port of Sonic 1 the gba port can be left in dust.

Sonic the Hedgehog- Genesis Review   Lexatom
Hey guys, welcome to another one of my reviews.  Now, let me just tell you that I love Sonic, I even love some of the modern games.  However, there is a port of Sonic the Hedgehog for the Genesis brought to the Gameboy Advance, and I'm going to tell you guys what I think about it.  So, without further ado, let's get started.
Graphics- The graphics of this game are a bit mediocre.  I know it's a port, but the graphics are worse than the original, in my opinion anyways.  I give the Graphics section a 4.
Sound-  If you are playing the original, the music and sounds in the game are pretty entertaining.  But, if you are playing the port, the sounds are different and some of the music is remixed to fit to the Gameboy Advance's hardware.  I just plain don't like it.  I give the Sounds section a 3.
Addictiveness- This game has no addictiveness whatsoever.  If you are bored and have nothing to do, that is probably the only reason you would play this game.  I give the Addictiveness section a 4.
Story- The story is the same, seeing as this is a port.  So, there is nothing too bad about the story.  I give the story section an 8.
Depth- Again, seeing as this is a port, the depth of the game is the same as the original.  I don't see it as that long of a game, though.  I give the Depth section a 6.
Difficulty- This game deserves a high difficulty, but not in a good way.  When you run, the screen is so small, you won't see when a random enemy pops up on, so you almost always get hit.  Because of that, I give the difficulty section a 9.
Overall- In my opinion, this game has got to be the worst Sonic game ever created, and I wouldn't be surprised if tons of people agreed with me.  I give this game an Overall rating of 6.1/10.

Oh no! what happened here?   RedHotToddy
Ah...June 23rd 1991, this was a big day for all of us, cause this was the official debut of sonic the hedgehog! Yes, the hedgehog has been running through loops, collecting rings, and defeating the evil Dr robotnik since 1991. But then! In 2006, in celebration of the hedgehog's 25th anniversary, Sega decided to port the hedgehog's first adventure to the GBA! Thus, we got....Sonic the hedgehog genesis. "Shivers' Will this be a great port? Or a horrible port? Let's get into the review....
Story-8/10
Hmph, you guys should already know the story here, eggman has kidnapped all the forest animals and turned them into robots. Now it's up to sonic to save all the animals and defeat eggman! I bet you guys should already remember the story from the original genesis version of this game...
Gameplay-5/10
The gameplay is essentially the same as it was on the genesis, except for one thing, THEY BUTCHERED THE WHOLE THING UP! The game lags ALOT in this port, often causing you to get hurt by an enemy or fall into a pit. It's so frustrating, I almost threw my GBA across the room! Plus, when you get the super sneakers, you run so fast, you can't even catch up with sonic anymore! I can't believe Sega could do this to their fans! Not to mention, due to the tiny size of the Game boy advance screen, You are going to be making a bunch of blind jumps left and right!
Graphics-5/10
Hmm....the graphics, they look....eh OK. Except, like I said, the game lags ALOT. Causing you to mess up in alot of situations. The HUD is pretty self explanatory, The top left hand corner of the screen shows how many lives you have until you get a game over and how many rings you have collected, and the right hand corner of the screen doesn't really show much.
Sound-4/10
Oh no....this is the biggest aspect of the game they messed up! The soundtrack! They changed just about everything! The instruments, the bass, you name it! And don't get me started on spring yard zone, they managed to screw that one up the most! As for the sound effects, they are pretty mediocre, but really nothing to write home about.
Addictiveness-3/10
This game is no fun at all, not with all these glitches around the place! I don't see how anyone can call this game fun, it's an absolute mess! I got really bored of this game right after Spring yard zone, heck! Spring yard zone was the farthest that I ever got through in this whole entire game!
Depth-3/10
There is a special "Anniversary mode" but all it is, is just the same thing but with the spin dash! Not mention, The game is about 4-6 worlds long, so It will probably take you 2-3 hours to finish the whole game, granted that you have collected as much chaos emeralds as you can. I surely joust you that  the game will last you this long.
Difficulty-9/10
This game is mind numbingly difficult, I couldn't even get pass marble zone! Without all these glitches! This game would've been great! I do not ever remember even getting past spring yard zone, yes the game is that difficult! I pity you that the game will make you scream in frustration after finally beating it. Wait, I don't even think this game is beatable!
Overall-4.5/10
If I were you, I would stay far away from this awful port. If you want a good port of the original game, I would say just buy sonic mega collection for gamecube, or sonic mega collection plus for PS2 and XBOX! I gave this game a 4.5 because how broken and unplayable it is, and not to mention the insanely low amount of replay value here.

Good Game   Karmachameleon12
I know the game has some problem with the controls and all but it really needs to be given a better look. For those(Me) who were growing up after the Genesis era. They didn't have the chance to play this game.
They do now.
The GBA was the only way or to get it on the mega collections for ps2..
But the remixes are good for this game. Plus it is the only one with a spin dash for the first sonic game and a level select. With an auto save feature. Unlike the original.
I still like the original better but this is still a good game.
Plus I found a Sega Genesis yesterday.
Have to find the plugs and all though
Anyway
TRY THE GAME

Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis review   Jynx
Sometimes a port of a game can be really good. This is not that kind of game. The game in question is Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis for the Game Boy Advance.
So you start the game and you notice there are two modes Original and Anniversary. You may ask what the difference is. Well, Anniversary Mode has a spin dash. That's really the only difference. So you pick a mode and after that you say "What the heck!?!?! Why is the camera so crushed in!?!?!" This is a huge deal since Sonic is a game where you go really fast and it it's already hard not slam into something in the Sega Genesis games. This just makes it ten times worse. So maybe you played the original so much you know where all the enemies are. If so then
1. You have way too much time on your hands.
2. That doesn't mean you can deal with the game's horrible hit detection. You can get hit by an enemy (,and trust me you will), clearly pick up one of the rings you dropped, not get it and die because the enemy shot you. Well, maybe you just wanna listen to the music. You can't even do that because the music translates horribly into Game Boy Advance music. To be fair, the game has things to offer. But it doesn't matter with all the other flaws. Not to mention this game is hard as all heck.
Overall, Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis is a horrible port of a great game. I'd stay away. But that's not all because It's Sonic Month, starting a bit early, yeah I'm late, so get ready.

darksonic12 08-22-14 - 06:50 PM
this is one of the worst sonic games ever way to go sega to celebrate sonic 15th anniversary you made a crappy anniversary game. sonic 06 is probably the worst sonic game of all time. I mean how can you mess up the original 1991 hit like it makes no sense.
LordOfSapphire 08-03-14 - 04:41 PM
When I first saw this game, I seriously thought it was a rom hack. I still can't believe this is an actual game.
supersonicracin.. 02-28-14 - 03:09 PM
This isn't a horrible port. It's not good, but its playable, better then 06 because 06 was COMPLETELY RUSHED all the way and filled with glitches, this is not bad, not good.
UndergradMammal 01-02-14 - 03:12 PM

Also, does the anniversary mode do anything else besides just let sonic do a spindash?
GamerPony2013 11-01-13 - 11:39 PM
I wish it did not take sonic 1,000,000 years to slow down when you let go of the left/right button

@RetroGameNinja, There actually WAS and there IS a Sonic the Hedgehog port to the GBA made by Sega and licensed by Nintendo, it IS real. If you look on eBay or whatever you'll find copies of it, not bootlegged, REAL copies.
StealStealer 02-03-13 - 02:07 PM
This is actually a good thing for a lot of us. Some, possible half, of the people who plays games on vizzed cant play games like the Sega Genesis because they have sucky computer. I can play all gb stuff and SNES but SNES sometimes crashes. So shush!
