"Well blow me down!"   PixelBrick
"I'm Popeye the sailor man!" You may know this notorious character from the famous Popeye The Sailor Man cartoon. They made A Nintendo Entertainment System game out of him due to his popularity! Let's get this review going. This was a big Nintendo hit in the 80's. I should mention that this was supposed to be the original Donkey Kong game. The title screen of Popeye is dreadfully similar, the level design is very similar as well, and Popeye was the role of Jump Man, Olive being Paulenta, and Blutch playing Donkey Kong. People consider this a rip-off of Donkey Kong. I call it a coincidence. :P
Overall: 9/10
This was a classic game I used to enjoy as a child. It was very addicting, had great sound, and had good graphics, which is all you will hear in this review. All these ratings in this review will make the average of 9, which is my Overall rating. Since I love the North American box art for the game, I'll rate it: 7/10. You will notice Popeye and Olive falling for each other. Unlike a lot of Nintendo games, the actual SPRITES are on the cover, but the box art is still enjoyable. With the ratings I give (and the experience you'll have if you ever get the chance to play Popeye), you will see why I rate this game a 9/10... I'm surprised this game has NOT been reviewed.
Graphics: 8/10
Now I know what you're thinking. 8 is a ridiculous rating for a game like this graphic-wise. We all have our own perspectives here. I like the sprites of Retro games. They are very nostalgic. The graphics in this game are great. Olive looks like Paulenta from Donkey Kong, as well as Blutch looking like Donkey Kong. But Popeye does not look like Jump Man whatsoever. The geography of the levels just look like an Atari 2600-generated game. But the enemies like the vultures in level three look pretty well done. Thou looks very realistic, it's like playing a Super Nintendo game when you see them birds. He he. The sprites for the object that Olive throws at you is very generic, but here's what's...interesting. The sprite for the spinach in each level...looks like hemp. Why is there spinach in each level? Well in the cartoon, when Popeye pops a can of spinach in his mouth, and gets huge biceps or has some superpower. But like I said...just look at the spinach. You will agree with me that it looks exactly...like 8-bit hemp. Just my opinion, and possibly yours. The water on all the levels...not very well done. Basically, it's light blue and a bit of white. I'll tell you why there is water in depth. It's not just because Popeye is la sailor man, but it serves a purpose in the game. Popeye himself looks okay. You can see the pipe sticking out of his mouth his facial expression looks like it does in the cartoon. And for some reason, in each level, his texture changes. Same with Blutch. Anyways, Popeye has his sailor outfit, but for some reason, Blutch does not. Blutch, you can see his beard shown on the cartoon, he is fat in the game and in the cartoon, and the sprites for him are okay. Keep in mind, this game was made in the era of early Nintendo Entertainment System games, so that is why the graphics are a bit stale, but they're still good.
Sound: 10/10
SOUND, THE FAVORITE OF THOU. The sound/music in this game is exceptional! I mean, when you eat the magic spinach, it plays the theme from the cartoon when POPEYE EATS THE SPINACH. It's very catchy. It has a very interesting tune. If you were to watch the cartoon, you would agree that the spinach theme is fit for an episode of The Three Stooges, or a western flick. But enough of the AWESOME spinach music, let's move on to the other sound effects and music from the game. When Blutch throws beer bottles (Yeah, I know. K-A game by the way :P), it plays the music changes, but when all three bottles thrown at one time disappear, the music changes back. The theme for all three levels sounds like a generic cartoon-y theme. It sounds familiar in a way, but I'm not going to post the link to the theme here. Just play the game on Vizzed. After you beat a level, a four second tune is played, letting you know you have beat the game. The title screen theme is better than Donkey Kong's! :P. And they say this is a rip-off of Donkey Kong. I mean, the scheme is a lot more catchier. You will agree with me. The soundtrack with this game is extraordinary! Now let's discuss sound effects. There is a sound effect if you punch by pressing A (Or R). If you knock Blutch into the water, an arcade sound effect is brought to you. Well this IS part of Nintendo's arcade series. Even for going up stairs, there is one of the most common sound effect in Atari 2600 - Super Nintendo Entertainment System games. On the second level, if you jump on the teeter-totter, it makes the same sound of putting Blutch in the ocean waters.
Replay-ability: 9/10
As usual, there is an arcade classic that is so addicting, you can't put your controller down should you be using a PC controller to play this on Vizzed, or playing this on the Virtual Console...or playing this on the Nintendo Entertainment System. This game can be very adicting, despite there only being THREE levels. But the concept of dodging Blutch is more fun than you think. Oddly, what makes this game even more addicting is the fact that I'm a huge fan of the cartoon. Back when cartoons were actually good. Ah.......hm, what? Oh right, the review. There really isn't much to say about this. The music and game-play make this game a potion of addicting super ultra triforce power wisdom, courage, why am I saying stuff from Ocarina of Time? I'm getting carried away here...the concept of the game, like I said, addicting. There isn't much to say here.
Story: 6/10
The story is like any Mario game, L.O.Z. game, or those other princess-saving pansy games. Popeye has feelings for Olive Oyl. But Blutch wants to go out with Olive. Popeye must catch the certain amount of the item Olive throws down in all three levels to save Olive from Bluch's retches! Can Popeye go through Blutch and eat the spinach to save Olive? So, very generic. But I like the story due to the cartoon (The cartoon makes the story better) If this was a Mario game, I would probably rate the story...a 4.  You know why I would. There is another Popeye video game, but same story. So...like I said, no special content here, Officer Retro! There's not much more to say here really. This game makes no sense of the main story to the cartoon. But the Three Stooges game for the Nintendo Entertainment System makes up for the inaccurate story compared to the TV show.
Depth: 5/10
Ah, depth. Usually my longest category, this is also the hardest category to type. Well let's start from the title screen. It looks very similar to Donkey Kong. The options are the same, and the colors are the exact same. If you are close to Blutch, he will throw three beer bottles at you. You can punch them by pressing A or R. The spinach will make you turn purple, you are invincible temporarily, Blutch will try to run away from you, and you will freeze time other than you and Blutch. You also run faster. (MEGA MAN X POWERS) Each level except the third will display how many of the item that Olive throws down that you have and need left. On level one, Olive throws hearts. Then it's musical notes on the second. And then on the last level, it's letters. Since there is no jump button, you escape the layer you are on with stairs or the ladder. The levels are very platform-y just like Donkey Kong. Another reason people think this is a rip-off of the overrated Donkey Kong for the Nintendo Entertainment System! On the second level, yet more platforms. Blutch and Popeye will change texture for some reason. On all the levels, the spinach moves around. It stays in one spot for five seconds. Anyways, on the second level there is a teeter totter. If youbounce on it and hit the window washer with the fat stack of money, you will get more points. One thing I forgot to mention, if you're falling down and you punch, you get a tiny, tiny boost. And guess what! YOU DON'T DIE FROM ONE CENTIMETER FALLS. ISN'T THAT GREAT? If you've played Donkey Kong, you'd know what I mean. On the third level, Olive will throw down letters. Blutch and Popeye change color. It is very hard to dodge him now. He can now punch to lead himself to you, he can jump, and you're dancing with Blutch on a boat. So vultures will come at you. But you can punch him for points. Keep in mind, if a piece of the item Olive throws down touches water, you will have limited time to pick it up, plus hence you will get a division of two of the points you got for touching one. After beating the three levels, you'll restart the game. This time, there will be an additional annoying enemy (That wasn't even in the cartoon) that will try to make the levels a challenge. You will get more points on your second or third or fourth and so forth run of the game. The maximum in the point system is 9,999,999. Also, I forgot to mention, remember that mid-air jump technique? Well on level one, if you time it right when jumping off the top layer, you will punch the "grape" that is hanging on the "roof" to get additional points. And also when you are spinach man, you get more points. Knocking Blutch into the waters gives you 30,000 points! Hooray for kicking obesity into waters. (He will re-spawn)
Difficulty: 5/10 (Stuck on big text )
Well, this review is ending with bigger text!  Well the difficulty in this game is not very impressive, unless you've played through the three levels 3+ times. Honestly, this game may look hard, but it isn't. You walk up stairs, punch beer. The concept of the game makes the game pure easiness. I think my little sister could beat this game twice...she's five.
I hope you enjoyed this review for....POPEYE.
