Megaman Battle Network Review   Zircron Swift
After having a spin-off on the SNES, it wasn't long before they figured that the Megaman series needed another spin-off for a hand held console. So far, all the spin-offs were good, so I'm told (never played Megaman X    =P  Hear it's good with a new twist of deeper story). It was interesting to see what they would add to the game play, but still see if it had that Megaman feel with a unique game play. And behold! The Network series was born. It offered fast paced action served with puzzles and RPG on the side plate with a dressing of strategy. The series was just as multi-featured as the first game series. It also offered a good story, just like Megaman X. These were the first Megaman games I played, but this one was the forth I played in the series. So lets jack-in and see what makes this game what it is.
The story is basic, but it's the finer details that make it so great. You have to stop an evil terrorist called WWW (World Three) from destroying the network society.....Oh yeah, the year is 20XX, in which everything is connected by computing. Nearly everyone has a PET (which stands for PErsonal Terminal), which has a character called a Navi *blue light ball with wings appears out of no-where and starts talking*
"HEY!!! HEY!!!!!!! LIS-" *I punch Navi away* No, not that kind of Navi, thank God. It's like your buddy you take everywhere. People become great friends with their Navi. Half the time, they fight each other to test their skills. They use Battle Chips to help them in battle. The main character in this game is Lan (possibly a joke to the internet system LAN? It means "Local Area Network" in case you didn't know already) and his Navi Megaman. They get into some riff-raff about WWW trying to destroy the world with a very deadly virus, in which needs four programs to create.
As you can see, it's an over head view at an angel. So if you want to go directly left, you need to press up and left at the same time. A little confusing at first, but it'll be second nature after half an hour. You can Jack-in to and out of the internet with the R button. Sometimes there are secret areas you can jack-in to. Don't be afraid to manically press the R button and run around everywhere, it might be worth it. When your on the internet, you can randomly come across a virus battle. You'll need to use your battle chips wisely to defeat them. At first, you have a poor selection with low damage, a weak mega buster, and bad chip codes (chip codes decide weather you can pick more than one chip at a time, i.e a with a, not b with c), but later on, you get to use more powerful chips, a faster and more powerful mega buster, and gain more resistance to damage as you get stronger.
You can buy armour. There are different types of armour, such as wood armour and aqua armour. Each is expensive, and each one that follows is even stronger than the last, but they are a nightmare to find. The big flaw with this game, and they fixed it in future games for sure, is that everywhere on the internet looks the same!
"HEY!!! HEYY!!!!!!! LISTEN!!!! *punches Navi again* As I was saying. You have no idea were you are apart from the little bit of text in the menu area that tells you were the hell you are on the internet or real world. You have to memorize the entire path by pure memory. It's annoying as hell!
One thing I really like about this game is that it brought new art to the characters of Megaman. Ever wanted to see what Flame man looked like? Well in the NES games, the only likeness was a 8-bit sprite, and the cover of the game on the cart. In this game, you can see him clearly out and inside of battle. The design for each character is awesome. My favorite being Bass (pronounced as the Bass cliff in music score, not bass the fish. Funnily enough, his robot dog is called Treble, the same sort in the music score. So they make a Treble and Bass combo. Who would have thought such awesome and dark characters would have such musical names?). Megamans art is also pretty cool. The overall graphics are pretty detailed for a GBA game, but I am left annoyed that they didn't detail the internet much (where I'm I?!?).
The music is just plain epic. When a normal fight occurs, the music just gets you into the mood of getting those viruses dealt with. But in a boss battle, that's different. You feel that you have to defeat this boss, the mood is entirely different. Your life is at stake if you don't win. There is music for the sad moments as well. The story and the music match the mood that your meant to feel at this stage of the game. The game has a lot to offer, even after the game has been beaten. But the way forward is locked unless those who have done so can pass. Then there's another for a different reason entirely. This makes you want to collect every chip type.
Overall, I give this game a 8.1/10     The graphics and music create something entirely new, yet oh-so similar in the world of Megaman. The game play is different, yet very fast-paced. The story, although simple, can create emotion with the finer detail and sub-stories. Altogether, this creates something that really fits into the Megaman series. It feels like it should be there. A part of Megaman history that has been discovered and has, in my option, become a classic in it's own right.....And I wonder what Navi was trying to tell me....something I already know, no doubt.
"HEY!!! LISTEN!!!! You're writing a review!"

A good start for the series   supernerd117
Hi supernerd117 here, this time with a review of Megaman Battle Network.  Review below.
Megaman Battle Network is everything Capcom needed to invigorate a dying franchise.  Megaman had been somewhat lackluster in sales and reviews, but this game delivered with unique gameplay, and a cool setting.
Story:
Lan and his and "Netnavi", Megaman, fight to prevent the WWW from creating a virus called the LifeVirus, and destroying the world.  The story is pretty basic, and confusing at times, but basically serves to drive the centerpiece of the game along, the gameplay.
Gameplay:
The gameplay here is simple to grasp, yet difficult to master.  Megaman moves about in a 3X3 grid, while his enemy(ies) control an opposing 3X3 grid.  Megaman is given a spread of 5 battlechips out of a folder of 30 when he goes into battle.  These battlechips are used with the A button, while B controls the Mega buster.  These battlechips represent the core of the gameplay, and add a ton of depth to the game.  There are a total of 176 battlechips to obtain, and they can be used together in a variety of ways.  For example, you might use an "area steal" battlechip to take the front 3 of your opponent's squares in order to use a sword battlechip, but the area steal can also be used to damage your opponent if they are in one of those 3 squares.  5 Navi battlechips can be included in the folder, and are usually the most powerful, enacting a cutscene to attack each time.  Also, combining certain battlechips together will enact a "program advance", which will result in a single, more powerful battlechip.  It's up to you to find those combinations, though, as I'm not going to spoil anything.  One disappointment with the gameplay was no option to run from battles.  Instead, this is handled through "Escape" battlechips, which can be traded in later in the game for a battlechip.
Addictiveness/Depth:
As stated before, there are a ton of battlechips to find, and battling enemies to obtain battlechips will keep you busy.  Certain enemies only reside in certain places, so you'll need to find these places and grind a bit until you get the battlechip you want.  "Ghost Navis" will pop up occasionally in certain areas, and are more powerful forms of enemies you have beaten.  Again, you'll have to grind a bit to find these enemies, which is the weakest point of the game.
Graphics:
This is the second weakest point of the game.  Although the battle animations are great, the similar environments and poor map system make it confusing to navigate the game, unless you've played it a lot.  The overworld is fine, but the internet is really bland, for the most part.
Sound:
Outside of the battle system, this is perhaps the strongest point of the game.  The music is bippy and exciting, more so at times the the music from Pokemon.  It fits perfectly with the theme of the game, and will keep you going througout your battles.
Difficulty:
The game is very easy, but might be slightly intimidating for first-timers.  Those who put a lot of effort into the game will find the game to be easy, but those who invest less time will be a little put off.
Overall:
Overall, this is a fantastic first game in the series.  The map system is a bit confusing, but the gameplay offsets any problems that the game has.

Jack in! Megaman.EXE! Execute!   legacyme3
Well I recently beat Megaman Battle Network again, and it was just as satisfying a second time through. Let's cut the idle chatter though, and get in to why I think this game deserves the scores I gave it.
Graphics- 8
These are pretty good graphics on the Gameboy Advance, all I have to say is that while they are good, the future games in the series are even better, which is why this doesn't get a 10. The characters were well colored and well shaded, enemies looked interesting.
Sound- 9
I played this game non stop for 9 hours to beat the game, and I listened to the sound track of the game the entire time. There wasn't ONE moment where I said TURN IT OFF. The music was catch and fit the game well.
Addictiveness- 8
This one is debateable. I love the MMBN series, so I'm more inclined to play it again and again and again. For most people, beating it once will be enough to get the most out of the first installment.
Story- 10
Bear with me on this one, as I am taking into account the stories of the sequels. The game on its own has a great story, but it makes its money in the long run as one of the best series on the game boy advance.
Depth- 7
It's fairly deep, with more to find once you beat the game, I won't elaborate further, but there is a good deal you can do besides the great story.
Difficulty- 3
This game is seriously easy, whether its because I'm really that good, or because the game is easy as all hell. I played the game on the GBA and it was smoother, (Im not comfortable with a keyboard, which is how I played this time) although I still beat it in about 9 hours. Some people will waste 14-20 hours on the average level without using guides, the advanced players will clear this in less than 10 hours.
Overall - 9.8
I rate this high, because this game is truly one of my favorite games of all time, it sparked a few years of interest in the series, and has kept me coming back for more every now and then, when I need something to take my mind off things.

Megaman BN1 is awesome!   Treyevers
This...is....pure....epic! I love this game so much, I made my game Trey quest (board Game, sorry not a game developer or even know how to make a game, also the name was chosen from a friend) but I'm not going to talk about TreyQuest now...okay I love this game because Mega man is awesome! As well as the main characters! INTRODUCING MAIN CHARACTERS: Lan Hikari, Controller or Operator of Megaman.EXE and has a PET to carry mega man around from place to place, as well as use his PET to hack into electrical devices! Mega Man, our favorite side scroll, shooting, platforming, and challenging game character, originally his design was really bland and make able in seconds (I've made my own mega man...) but in this game he has a completely new concept, as well as becoming an Electronical pet/VirusDeleter. Though you don't see a lot of the original characters, a lot of them are in here, sorry cutman, they didn't want you. But gutsman, Iceman, Elecman, and more are in here, including some new characters, and some secret Internet bosses that you have to Jack In your PC and wander around to find, I'll tell you one of their names, stone man, he's not that hard but be careful! I just love every mega man game ever!
==================
Why I Rated What I Did
==================
Difficulty: 10, because its really hard, especially at Elecman's Stage.
Depth: 10, The Game goes on forever!FUUUUUUUUNNNNNN! (Trey.EXE Haz Stopped Working Over Funness Rage)
Story: 10, because your saving the world from complete disaster!
Addictiveness: 10, Having fun challenging more Enemy Robots and Viruses.
Sound: 10, When i was little i'd charge my gameboy and sneak it outside so i could lie down and listen to Ac/Dc Town Theme.
Graphics: 10, Really Good for Game Boy
Overall: 10, because of the above.

my Megaman Battle Network review   theironhide
Hey guys, Theironhide here with a new review. I remember that someone recommended this game to me back when I made my ps1 Megaman 8 review. Reading his / her comment got me to play a few more Megaman games, including this 1. This is what I'm currently planning: I'm gonna play out and review all main series Megaman Battle Network games chronologically. While I'll play the first 4 games and the sixth game here on Vizzed, I'm planning to play the fifth game in the collection version on my DS to have a bit of verity in my marathon. Well, since I've already played the first 1 out, I'll review that game right now. Lets get this started.
Graphics: 9
I have to say, this game doesn't look bad for GBA standards. The graphics in this game are very colorful and the redesigns for the Netnavi's (previously robot masters) are not bad. The game also gives some creative human designs. 1 Flaw I do have with this game thought, is that it sometimes drags a little, especially with the net. Jacking into the net looks cool at first, but after the twentieth time it gets really old. Other than that, I don't have much to say
Sound: 6
This game is a lot like Sonic Chronicles: the dark brotherhood, when looking at the sound. The sound effects are pretty good. I like many of the sound effects for this game, like the shooting sound and sound effects for perspective chips (even if the beeping at low hp can get annoying, like in many games). However, here comes the elephant in the room: the music. Like in Sonic Chronicles, the music (at least in my opinion) is terrible. The music in this game (for the most part) sounds like it could have been done on the game gear. Most of the music is also pretty forgettable (at least for me). Overall nice sound effects, but the music keeps the rating low.
Addictiveness: 8
I'll be honest with you guys, I didn't expect I would like the game play here so much. It has a unique battle system with a rpg style over world (which makes sense since this game is considered a rpg). I personally really like the battle system. It has you moving in squares and you can use chips you collect though the game either for support, or for attacks that deal more damage than your buster. It can drag a little if you want to progress trough the story and don't know what to do, but other than that my issues are just nitpicks.
Story: 8
Being a rpg, progressing though the story is a thing you really want to do. To summarise the story (without any major spoilers): the story focuses on a boy named Lan and his Navi Megaman. 1 day he has to save his house which got sabotaged by a member of an evil organisation called WWW. After that, more trouble keeps being caused by WWW and Land and Megaman have to stop them. They eventually manage to stop their leader. I won't spoil who their leader is, but you could already guess it's a past Megaman villain due to the fact that most of the Netnavi's are redesigns of previous Megaman robots. I could tell more, but then I would spoil too much.
Depth: 8
Aside from playing out the main story, you can also try to collect all chips from all enemies in the game. You can also fight other Netnavi's to get their chips. Each Netnavi does have a level 2 chip as well, so don't think you're done with fighting them after getting their level 1 chips. It can take a while, so I only recommend this for completionists.
Difficulty: 7
This game can be challenging, but it's not nearly as hard as the platform games. The game was really hard at first for me, but that was before I discovered you can buy hp-ups, power-ups and armors. For those of you who don't know, these are power-ups to increase hp, a certain skill of your buster or to half you damage (with the exception of the element your armor is weak against). When I bought these (and I had a crap ton of money to do so) the game became significantly easier for me. Playing without these power-ups isn't impossible, but you need to be able to dodge extremely well if you want to try this.
Overall
I honestly didn't expect to like this game as much as I do. The music is pretty bad, but that doesn't turn me away from the fun battle system, nice and colorful graphics, large collection of chips and fun Netnavi battles. I overall give this game an 8 out of 1, not my favorite game, but certainly a fun experience.

Battle! Execute! Transmit!   AweshumeT
This is my 'Definitive' Review of Mega Man Battle Network, after having beat it twice. Once recently, and once in the past.
Graphics =-=-= 8
The graphics are pretty wonderful! There's a lot of color and charm with what the developers did and had to work with. Very few points of this game are dark and dreary, and you can always tell what you're looking at.
The Net area is cyberspace themed, and is made to look personalized depending on what machine you have connected to. In there you will get to see repeating patterns in the background, but the digitized cutscene that plays when entering machines is still cool for the time that this game came out in.
Sound =-=-=
The music can get a bit grating at times but I also understand this was the GBA era. I do wish there were multiple or different battle area themes, because hearing the same one over (Even for bosses, unfortunately except for like the last one and some secrets) can get bland.
Addictiveness =-=-=
If you're a mega man fan, then great! You'll probably recognize some of the characters based on their names and appearance. That's a bonus!
If you're new to the franchise, then I'd say the most addicting aspect is the (hopefully) quick and snappy fighting mechanics, along with the 'deck building' aspect in the form of customizable attack lists. There is a minor 'collectathon' aspect but really it's more of 'let's get more of X because it's good' and not 'I NEED TO GET EVERYTHING TO WIN'.
The story is decent enough to pull you along to see what happens next and what you'll get into, but I can definitely say that this is a decent basis for the rest of the franchise. It's cool seeing characters you already know about be remixed and changed up in appearance. It's also fun to collect the chips for attacks and see how fast you can defeat opponents. The faster you beat them, the more likely you are to get rarer and more powerful attacks to use later!
(Also if you want to 100% the game you'll need to get the fastest times or get REALLY lucky with RNG)
Story =-=-=
The story is pretty alright for what it's worth. It's not The Next Odyssey worthy but it's also not 'The worst Fanfiction'. It plays very much like a Saturday morning cartoon, with simple villains and linear progression. There are SOME more serious elements to the story that are a bit more surprising for an E rated game, though you can absolutely miss them if you are speeding through the dialog.
One thing I will comment is that there are a few moments of 'huh? Where do I go?' that the game does not really give you much clues for. The first instance comes pretty early on when you are searching for someone's child. The only hint that you have is that it's related to another character, but... there's nothing else that tells you where to start your search!
I happened to stumble upon the accident almost by accident by interacting with a random car that was 'out of place', meaning it was just now put in a spot where I could interact with. There wasn't any build up or 'hey, maybe I should check back in X location since that's where he was last spotted' comments from NPCs.
That's probably the only time I had trouble progressing the plot. On the other hand, if you play the game for a while and then stop, you may have bumps in figuring out where to go or who to talk to next without a guide. The game can give vague hints such as 'Wow we need to talk to someone who was a former villain'. Like there isn't much 'ok where to?' you can go off of if you were just handed the game randomly. Definitely one of those titles that's best played in multiple consecutive sittings.
Depth =-=-=
Difficulty =-=-=-
At it's Best
Megaman's highlight moments come from the characters + their designs, as well as the customizable 'folder' of attacks you are able to choose from.
You are able to customize your entire playstyle around fast attacks, elemental advantages, or multi-tile targeting moves! You can even opt for hard-hitting melee attacks if you get enough 'chips' to enable a closer fight style.
Of course you have to collect the attacks yourself, and there is a bit of a learning curve to understanding how to best build your deck.
In an ideal world, your 'folder' will have mostly attacks that have one or two 'letters', allowing you to string multiple attacks together without having to wait extra time and dodge enemy attacks.
But to ADD to this, there are also special moves called 'Chip Advances' which can activate if you queue up certain attacks with the same letter or type. For example, if you select Cannon A, B, and C, you will get a super move called cannon-Z that gives you unlimited cannon ammo and 3 seconds of invincibility.
To balance the game however, you can only include 10 of 1 type of attack in your 'folder' of 30 attacks. This rule does not care about the letter of the attack. This means you can only include 10 cannon cards, no matter what letter they are.
At it's Worst
I'd say that the absolute WORST aspects of Mega Man Battle Network 1 have to be the Net area for ElecMan, and the wandering around the larger Net for some aspects.
See the biggest issue this game has is there isn't a 'map' that gives you a general idea of where things are. You have to remember shortcuts, paths to take, and more importantly some paths are only mentioned by NPCs. Talking to NPCs to get hints and where to go is fine, but some of them have dialog that's REALLY important such as puzzle hints.
The InterNet area that makes up a large portion of the game's middle-late game is labryinth like without a guide or map, and the worst part is that when you play the game for the first time you won't know which path is the one that will take you to where you need to go. Many paths have dead ends with items in them, but finding these ends while searching for the UnderNet late game means that you have to backtrack and fight more enemies when you're trying to progress plot.
I don't think that's where most of my docked points come from because there are some areas that have special encounters with some previous bosses, making dead ends turn into "Oh s*** it's a secret fight' moments.
ElecMan's Net area gets the slap of a ruler because it's kinda not that fun. You have to follow invisible paths to get to the worst part of the game.
The absolute WORST part of Mega Man Battle Network is the 'pick a door' battery aspect of ElecMan's Net area.
The rules are simple. Place batteries in slots, and then flick the switch to see if your guess is right. If not, you have to turn the switch off and re-place them. You only get two guesses before you have to 'recharge' the batteries by talking to a nearby NPC. The only hint you are given is that the solutions involve patterns with non-adjacent battery slots, and later on, you will need to find the minimum batteries necessary to proceed.
Without a guide, this is hands down the worst part of the game because you will spend plenty of time guessing patterns to succeed. Save states are definitely helpful here. This area has the most frustrating puzzles in the whole game, and that's saying something when the first puzzles the game throws at you are sliding ice puzzles with janky movement.
ElecMan's "Pick a door"-esque battery puzzle is smack dab right in the middle of the game, and the boss fight afterwards is sufficient enough of a threat to make it alright. Not super unfair, but this portion of the game just feels like blatant padding that could easily have been solved with something easy like NPCs on hidden paths that give more hints/solutions, or indicating what row matches to what light. On the bright side, there is no 'Wily' version of this puzzle, just the invisible path aspect later on. Which is alright because there are at least hints this time that are less vague.
OVERALL SCORE: 8.4
Final Thoughts:
This game is a good start for the franchise, but there are some obviously clunky elements that will hopefully be improved upon in future titles, such as the Chip Advance system, and more customization options for the attacks. Nothing sucks more than entering a boss fight with chips you can't synergize with and then having to spend more time trying to scramble together damage while learning attack patterns on the first time.
The 'retro future' aesthetic and cyberspace story is really cool, and I hope that is expanded upon in future titles of this franchise. :D
Overall this game isn't too bad, but it's a start. It has some cool things going for it, and it's rather cool for the time period that it came out in! (It even predicted self driving cars, wow!)

Mega Man "Arena"   rightfootedglove
When I first started playing this game, I wasn't sure what I'd think.  I like Mega Man, but I could see from screen shots that it played differently than most.  I have played my fair share of turn based games like this one (like Paper Mario for example) and like them so I thought I'd give it a shot.  I have to say, I was rather impressed with this game!  When I first started playing it, it was very addicting.  I wanted to keep playing it!  As of now, I don't think I'd say I want to play it again, but it's seems worth a try.  The story is fairly interesting and has decent depth with twists and turns along the way.  I also thought certain dialogue and such was fun to read as it made references to technology that we know very well.  As far as the graphics go, they're pretty much what they should be!  There were points in the game when I actually found it to be a challenge, so I appreciated the diverse difficulty as it also proved to be simple overall.  Once again, a good game worth a try!

 @Munkkikahvi Yeah, it's pretty good for a GBA game.

 greggy its not a bug you have to jack in to the stoplight pole with the orange crosswalk sign use the tunnel stairs to move about as all roads are blocked. once you do that move on to the next block

 WOW completely stuck in dentown when you need to stop the bus. Every area gives me the same dumb message of needing to stop the bus. I can't leave this area. What lame bug

Awegamer 04-13-13 - 01:20 PM
 Well, this is so slow on my computer. I have every megaman game anyway. Every battle network game every real megaman nes game (and the 2 on the wii) And the 4 ds games of megaman 2 gameboy colors and 6 battle networks. Not bad eh?

 Strategy to beat NumberMan:Have good reflexes to find the ball with the lowest number,and when the dice/bombs appear, get right in front of them and bust,since you are closer you will bust faster,otherwise just attack him as quick as you can,worked for me
retrokid12 03-11-13 - 05:07 PM
 How do you get to the AV Room?
TechnoDragon77 03-09-13 - 06:58 PM
 Just defeated the boss. I must say, not that good of a battle network game, therefore, no after-story for me, I'm saving that for 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6
TechnoDragon77 03-06-13 - 05:43 PM
 Has anyone noticed that this is the only megaman battle network game with such shiny and clear GBA graphics in the entire series?
chahanik 02-16-13 - 09:06 AM
 This is one of the better GBA games I've played.

 This game is awesome. Maybe, just maybe, I will consider buying it truly! So that, no matter what, I can play it; even without the inter-connected-nets. :D x)
