Mega Man 4 Ridley Hack Take IV   tornadocam
Here we have another Mega Man 4 hack. The name of this one is Mega Man 4 Ridley Hack 4. The original Mega Man 4 was a popular game released in 1991. It is often regarded as one of the top NES games with several sites ranking in the top 100 NES games of all time. So it should be no surprise that several hacks have been made of this great game. But how does this version compare to the original and previous hacks? Well lets find out
Story: 9
Like the previous Ridley hacks of this game the story was left unchanged from the original. Dr. Wily's previous three attempts at world domination have been foiled by Mega Man. The world is at peace once more. When all of a sudden 8 new Robot Masters go on a terror causing destruction and chaos. Dr. Cossack appears and tells the world that this is his doing. He is tired of being overshadowed by Dr. Light and its time the world knows who he is. He challenges Mega Man to a duel. Mega Man heads out to find out who is Dr. Cossack. Is this really Dr. Cossack's doing or is an old foe pulling strings once again?
Okay as I stated in the original Mega Man 4 the story here has a lot going on in it. I really think Capcom was trying to add some suspense, mystery and creativity to the plot. I want to think that Mega Man 4 was the first game were you had two forts in it. Players didn't find out till later in the game who the true villain  was.  To me that shows creativity. To be honest I like games that keep you in suspense. So since the original plot was unchanged. I think I will keep my original rating the same 9 out of 10 does it.
Graphics and Controls: 8
Well this is a hack so I did not expect perfect graphics. The original game had near perfect graphics and hardly any lags. So it would be hard to top the original game's graphics. Still for this to be a hack the graphics are very solid. I liked how the stages have been changed. Lot of the stages were borrowed from future games like Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10. The color seems to go very well with the background. The sprites are pretty much the same from Mega Man 4. In addition the graphics remind me a lot of Mega Man 4 Ridley Hack 3. The only problem with the graphics was there are a few minor lags in the game. They are not terrible and are minor. To be honest since this was a hack I expected a lag or two.
The controls are good for a hack. They are not like the original game though. I think Mega Man 4 had some of the best controls for an NES game. The only other Mega Man game for the NES that had controls on par with Mega Man 4 was Mega Man 3. But back to this game. Overall the controls are pretty decent. Mega Man seems to run, jump and shoot well. The only time the controls felt sluggish and that I was fighting against them was in the water stages. It seemed like the controls got out of whack when I was playing the water stages. Still, the graphics and controls are pretty decent. Thus, I give them a solid 8 out of 10.
Sound: 10
Mega Man 4 (original version) had one of the best soundtracks in a Mega Man game. So I was glad to see once again the makers did not change that. What is there not to love about the sound in this game? The music just like the original version is awesome. One could just pause the game and listen to the music for several minutes. Mega Man games are infamous for their music and this one is no exception. I also like how the other sounds in the game were left unchanged. Mega Man's  buster charging up still sounds awesome. Mega Man's shots sound great and let the player know their shots are doing damage. The enemies shots also sound good letting you know they mean business. The sound does not get much better than this. So just like the original game I will keep the sound a perfect rating.
Replay Value: 8
Mega Man 4 Ridley Hack is a fun game to play and I had fun playing it. This is one hack I would and will play again. The sound is terrific, and the graphics are decent. Even though this is just a hack it is nicely made. One could easily forget they are playing a hack of the original game. I think that is what the makers of the game were aiming for. It is easy to forget your playing a hack due to the different stage layout, different backgrounds, and even some different enemies. This version reminded me of MM 4 Ridley Hack III in that it fixed the problems the previous MM 4 ridley hacks had. Ridley Hack Version III really fixed the problems the first and second version had. The graphics and controls are greatly improved. The lags have been improved a lot on. This is one you will want to play again. Thus, at the end of the day I give the replay value a solid 8 out of 10.
Depth: 9
This hack continues the tradition of Mega Man games having a lot of depth to them. The original Mega Man 4 had a lot of depth to it with secret routes, different items to collect and lots of secrets. This version continues that. There are lots of secret rooms in this game and secret items to find. One will have to revisit every stage to get all the items. It should also be noted that some stages require more than one visit to get all the items. The stages are pretty long too. Unless your a speed runner prepare to spend several minutes on each stage. Even if you are a speed runner you will probably get slowed down a lot in this (more on that in the difficulty section). I really like games with a lot of depth to them. To me it adds to the replay value and makes the game more fun. It also gives you a sense of accomplishment when you master a stage. So it should be no surprise I give the depth rating a very solid 9 out of 10.
Difficulty: 8
Mega Man 4 was a difficult game to master but once you got the hang of it it was not too bad. Mega Man 4 simple was Mega Man 4 made easy. Then you had Ridley Hacks I and II that just buried you with their difficulty. The third Ridley Version had its difficult spots but it was a breather compared to the previous two hacks. So how does version 4 difficulty compare to the others? Well, It felt more like the original game to be honest.
MM Ridley Hack Version IV upped the difficulty from version III.  The third Ridley Hack took a lot of the pits and spikes out. Guess what the spikes and pits are back in this game and there are plenty of them. Its not like Ridley Hack I and II. Its more like the original game. The original MM 4 was known for its high number of pits, spikes and enemy placement. That is pretty much the story with this game. There are lots of pits in this game but nothing unbearable. There is a good change you will fall into a pit in this game. Spikes are plentiful in this game. Now, it wouldn't be a Mega Man game without spikes now would it? Of course not, so the spikes make a return. Just about every stage has spikes in it. It is so easy to miss a jump and get poked to death. Enemy placement can be brutal at times in this game but doable. A lot of the enemies love to hit you from the behind, chase you or even flog you to death. To make things worse some of the enemies are over pits and spikes. So to get past them requires precise jumping. The enemies just love to knock you off and smack you down causing you to fall to your doom or get poked to death.  Some enemies though take a good chunk of health when they hit you. The Robot Masters are difficult even with their weaknesses.
I really like games that challenge you and are difficult for the right reasons. This game is pretty much difficult for the right reasons. The only time it is difficult for the wrong reasons is the water stages. In the water stages it feels like I'm having to fight the controls a lot. This can get you hit, or sent you into the spikes of doom. I give the difficulty a good 8 out of 10 as it feels and reminds me more of the original game. I don't think the game is a 9 out of 10 like the Ridley Hack's I and II of Mega Man 4 where. Those two versions just really buried you in terms of difficulty. Its not easy like the third Ridley hack of MM III was and its not super easy like Simple Version was. Yes this version is difficult due to the death traps and enemies. But the thing is once you play through the game a few times it doesn't get near as bad. Its like the first few times its very difficult. But, after that it feels more like the original game. So yeah, 8 out of 10 sounds about right.
Overall Rating 9.1
This Version was really good and it resembles more of the original version but just a little bit under par. It would be pretty hard to top the original version that game is just special. Still this is a good solid game and is nicely done. I'm glad this version like the third version cleaned up the problems that effected Ridley Hack's I and II of Mega Man 4. So lets get to the positives.
I really like how the makers of this game used future Mega Man games as the stage background. To me it shows creativity but it also shows how the makers of this game were trying give players the impression this was a different game. Even though its really a hack of Mega Man 4, One could easily forget they are playing a hack. I also like how they left the sound alone. As the old saying goes if its not broke then don't fix it. The sound did not need to be fixing. In addition, I like how the makers of this game made the difficulty like the original game. The first two versions were so difficult that one could get frustrated and ruined from playing hacks. The third version had its difficult moments but was not too bad at all. This version seems to be more like the original game in terms of difficulty. Its difficult but doable. I can tell the makers of this game put a lot of effort into making this game. I also get the feel as I have mentioned several times they were trying to offer something new here. I really like that it shows creativity and leaves the impression this one took a lot of time to make.
Now onto the negatives. Since this is a hack there are going to be some negatives. The good news is these negatives are minor and should not detour one from trying this game. The main negative I have with this game is the controls when Mega Man is underwater. For the most part the controls were pretty solid in this game. But when I was completing the water stages the controls felt out of whack. I found myself fighting against the controls at times. Sometimes it seemed when I would jump the controls would get real sluggish causing me to fall into the spikes. Also Mega Man seems to be a lot slower in the water stages. The original Mega Man 4 didn't have this problem. So maybe since this was a hack the makers didn't have the software that Capcom has. Also there were a few times were I did notice some lags. There are not that many lags so its not to big of a problem. But if your in the side scrolling stage it could present a problem if you didn't know when the enemies would pop up or were the pits were. These are really the only two negatives of this game.
Overall, I think this is a very solid game and a nice hack. Of the Ridley Hacks of Mega Man 4 this one has been the best version. I wonder what Version V and VI will be like? But so far this is probably my favorite hack version. Well except for Simple. So would I recommend this game? Yes by all means I think this would be a good one to introduce somebody that hasn't played a hack yet. The game is difficult but nothing like the first two Ridley Hacks of Mega Man 4. This is pretty close to the original Mega Man 4. This is a fun game and I had fun playing it. I also think this is a game you would want to play again its fun for all ages. Thus I give MM 4 Ridley hack Version IV a solid 9.1. Hacks don't get much better than this. Not quite as perfect as the original but close. So yeah, 9.1 seems about right. I hope you enjoy this game like I did
Blessings in Christ
