A Virtual Diamond in the Rough gamerforlifefor..
On November 27th, 1995, the sequel to the Gameboy classic Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land was released. That game's name is Virtual Boy Wario Land. (Wario Land II for the GBC was actually the 3rd game in the Wario Land series.) As the name suggests, it was created for the now infamous Virtual Boy, a system that promised virtual reality and 3D graphics, but failed to deliver in a huge way, becoming Nintendo's worst selling console. Despite being made for one of the worst consoles of all time, Virtual Boy Wario Land is one of, if not the best Wario game I've ever played. Why do I say this? I'll tell you by making this review.
Graphics: 10/10 One complaint that most people had with the Virtual Boy was the fact that the graphics are in red and black. With that being said, Virtual Boy Wario Land makes the most of the Virtual Boy's graphical limitations and offers the best visuals on the system. The character sprites are at the highest quality of any Virtual Boy title, and the level designs are equally as impressive. Another reason why the visuals are so impressive is because of the variety of levels this game offers, and how well they look compared to other games on the system. The levels vary from forests, to caves, and even a haunted house. Not other game on this system offers as much level variety, and none of the other games come close to showing what the Virtual Boy was capable of as well as Virtual Boy Wario Land. For these reasons, I'm giving the graphics a 10!
Sound: 9/10 As far as games for the Virtual Boy go, this game's soundtrack is the best you'll find on Virtual Boy. It has some very catchy music, including most of the level themes. There's only one track in the game that I found to be lackluster, and that's the boss theme. Other than that, the rest of the soundtrack is the perfect example of how great a soundtrack on the Virtual Boy can be. The sound effects are equally as impressive. Overall, the soundtrack for Virtual Boy Wario Land is the best that the Virtual Boy has to offer. Since the boss theme is kinda disappointing, I'm giving the sound a 9 instead of a 10.
Addictiveness: 10/10 Out of all the Virtual Boy titles, Virtual Boy Wario Land has by far the most replay value. The levels in the game are so diverse, and there's so many areas to explore throughout the levels as well. Another reason this game has such high replay value is because of the game's multiple endings. Depending on how many treasures and money you get throughout the game, you can get different endings. The biggest reason this game is so addicting is because of it's unique gameplay mechanics. In most of the levels, there are these springs that you can jump on that will allow you to jump into the background. This is a feature that not only allows further progression, but it also provides a very unique perspective on a side scrolling platformer. The feature is also used well during boss battles. Overall, the background feature, the multiple endings, and all the hidden goodies make Virtual Boy Wario Land one of the most addicting platformers I've ever played. For these reasons, I'm giving the addictiveness a 10.
Story: 7/10 The story for Virtual Boy Wario Land starts when Wario wakes up and sees these masked monsters. He follows them to a cave, he finds a treasure, and a trap is sprung, causing him to fall into an underground labyrinth. Can Wario escape the labyrinth? Will he be able to find all the treasure? That all depends on your actions as the player. There are multiple endings based on how much money and how many treasures you find in the game, which not only helps the story, but it also gives the game replay value. Overall, the story for this game is worthy of a 7 in my eyes.
Depth: 4/10 Virtual Boy Wario Land offers a decent amount of content. There are a total of 14 levels, 4 of which are boss stages. In each level, there's hidden treasures that come in handy at the end of the game, as well as coins and hearts that are helpful as well. As far as length goes, there are longer platformers out there. The game doesn't take long to complete, so I'm giving the depth a 4.
Difficulty: 4/10 Virtual Boy Wario Land can at times bring a decent amount of toughness, especially when it comes to finding all the hidden treasure in the game. They are well hidden throughout the levels, so making sure thoroughly look through each area is necessary in order to 100% this game. Other than that, the game isn't super tough. As long as you've got a power up, defeating enemies and progressing through the game is pretty easy. If you get hit by an enemy and get turned into Mini Wario, then it gets much tougher to get through the obstacles that stand in your way. There's a good amount of blocks that can give you powerups though, so overall, the levels aren't all that tough. The boss battles aren't super hard either. Overall, there are harder games out there, and for these reasons, I'm giving the difficulty a 4.
Overall Score: 9.2/10 While the Virtual Boy itself was a massive failure for Nintendo, they at least managed to make this one masterpiece for the system that should be played by all platforming fans. The graphics, though in red and black are very well detailed, there are many hidden treasures to find, and the multiple endings give the game massive replay value. The background feature is extremely unique, and is what separates this title from it's predecessor. Though it's a relatively short game, Virtual Boy Wario Land is without a doubt, the best Virtual Boy game ever, and it very well may be the best Wario game ever made. If you haven't played this game, then playing it right here on Vizzed is the perfect way to experience a wonderful Virtual Boy platformer without having to deal with the eye straining and headache inducing console. Overall, I'm proud to give Virtual Boy Wario Land a final score of 9.2/10.

Now in Red and Black! - VB Wario Land Review liquidmk
Before the review, I'd like to say I'm a fan of Wario Land games. I've played them from the very first Wario Land to Wario Land Shake It on the Wii. It's funny that I've never played this one because I never had a Virtual Boy.. Until now! It's a solid entry to the Wario Land series and it's pretty great!
(Note: I use "VB" as the abbreviation for Virtual Boy. This is to save space for the review.)
--Graphics--I wanted to save the graphics section for last, but I think for the sake of everyone's retinas, it's a game for the VB. It will be in red and black all the time and it might hurt your eyes after a long period of time. So for your own safety, don't play this for hours! Take frequent breaks to get a good experience with this game.
Now that the safety precautions are out of the way, let's talk about the graphics themselves. The graphics are pretty well done and fit into the style of how Wario Land is. Animation-wise, everything is fluid. It's "easy" on the eyes. (Not the best way of putting it, but should be easy enough to understand.)
Though the style of graphics are pretty good, they have demonstrated some neat tricks with VB's technology as well. Example: Wario uses a jump pad to jump into the background and then uses another jump pad to jump back to another part of the stage. I found that pretty cool for the VB's technology.
Unfortunately, like all of the VB games, it's always in black and red. It's the only fault of the game in my opinion.
I give the graphics a solid
9 for good use of the VB's capabilities and great graphical style.
--Sound/Music--Sound-wise, it's like a more advanced form of what the Game Boy's audio was. It's definitely listenable and fits the style of the music from Wario Land. The music can be pleasant at times and that can be enough to enjoy it all the way through. As for the sound effects, they're more geared to the early Wario Land games in terms of quality.
I give the sound and music an
8. You're not going to remember this game for its audio, unfortunately. This does get some bonus points for making the music fit some parts of some stages, though.
--Addictiveness / Depth--Like the older Wario Land games, it's pretty fun to play! Plenty of powerups to fool around with, such as a Bull Powerup that has an earthquake-like ground pound and a Dragon Powerup that shoots out flames! (It works underwater, which is a plus.) It also has a good
selection of stages and some bosses, so replayability is a plus with this one.
As for the amount of content.. Every stage requires you to find a key at the end of every stage in order to advance, which can take some time and effort. At the end of every stage, there are two minigames that you can choose to do. One minigame can increase your hearts (Getting 100 hearts equals a 1UP.) and/or multiplying your coins with a coin minigame. Coins total up to your overall coin total, so if that's your sort of thing, try to get a huge coin total before the game ends. (It's possible to get 9999 coins in the coin minigame!)
Depth gets a
9, Addictiveness gets an
8. The addition of two minigames in between stages increases the addictiveness, but that's about it other than the game itself. The stages themselves might be fun enough to play through for attempting a high score.
--Overall--Overall, VB Wario Land is a fun game that's worth a play. Though it's "unfortunately" on the VB, don't let that stop you from playing it. If you love Wario games in general, this is still worth a play.
I give VB Wario Land an
8.6 out of 10. VB Wario Land definitely one of the better games on the system and I recommend this to anyone who enjoys Wario and/or platforming. It's also a great start for those who want to get into the Virtual Boy collection.

Wario Land for the VB IgorBird122
I haven't done a review for a good long time, for like 3 months about, so some parts could be a little rusty, but I'll go ahead and post another review.I wanted to review this because this is a pretty much a game I wanted to try out when I was young when I was reading an issue of Nintendo Power about this game and looked fun to try out, but never have until now. This review is Wario Land for the Virtual Boy, despite the lack of games and it's lifetime, I do like to play this game, it is pretty neat and all, I'll describe on those with each of the categories.Graphics:Despite with the typical Virtual Boy's Red and Black screen, the graphics are pretty good though WIth how the foreground and background is like and with Virtual Boy's 3D, this game's graphics really great and fit in with the VB. although the only problem is with the Red/Black colors, it can really hurt on your eyes overtime though, that pretty much why the VB didn't last long. Dispite that, I think the graphics are alright though.I give this a 9 out of 10.------Sound/Music:The Sound effects of the game is pretty great, even for the Virtual Boy, the music is much clearer and nice that from the Game Boy / Game Boy Color versions, although some sounds and music does sound a little cheesy but still, pretty nice music though.Although the sound and music, although it sounds great here and there and some music does fit with the levels and some, not so much, it pretty much depends on the level you're playing.I give this an 8 out of 10------Addictiveness:I do got to say, even with the Red/Black screen, this game can be a little addicting in a way, Like the previous Wario games, the Virtual Boy's version is really addicting, mostly you really like to play the things I mentioned before (like the graphics and sound/music), and the gameplay of it, and like I said in the intro, I wanted to play this game so bad since I was young and I finally have.I give this a 9 out of 10------Story:The story in this game is pretty interesting, Wario was on vacation, flying an airplane to a basin to hang out and relax until he happen to spot some mask-guys?carrying?some?treasure and with typical Wario, we wanted to get that treasure so he followed them and then he landed into a trap and now stuck underground he finds his way to those mask-guys and ger revenge and take the?treasure.I give this an 8 out of 10------Depth:The Depth of this game is pretty great, the reason is with all the new power-ups and the returning power-ups from the first Wario game (Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3), although it doesn't have as many power-ups than Wario Land II and 3 has, but still has quite a number of power-ups, plus with all the levels you can pick and the mini-games from the first Wario game also makes a return and get a chance to get more hearts and/or coins.I give this a 9 out of 10------Difficulty:The difficulty of this game is extremely hard, because of the gameplay and the Red/Black screen can though you off though, because they could be an enemy hiding from you and you don't even know it till it's like too late, and some of the enemies, especially with the bosses, they will take quite a bit of time to beat if your not used to playing this game, or even the Virtual Boy for that matter, but if you're used to it, then the game will be a pretty easy game to beat nonetheless.I give this a 9 out of 10.------Overall:Overall, I pretty much got to say, despite the?Virtual?Boy's short?lifespan, this game is a pretty great game to try out and if somehow, you manage to get your hands on a Virtual Boy, my?recommencement?game would be Wario Land because this game is extremely fun to play on the VB, this game was the best selling game for the VB, despite it's low game count.Overall, I give this game a 9 out of 10
