Mega Man 5 was released in 1992 and was one of the last hits for the NES. The other last hits for the NES was Kirby's Adventure and Mega Man 6 which came out in 1993. Mega Man 5 is a popular game and in fact is often ranked in the top 100 of greatest NES games of all time. So it should be no surprise that several hacks exists of this game. Mega Man 5 Ridley Hack I is a hack of the original Mega Man 5. So I will be comparing this version to the original as well as other hacks.

Story: 9

The Story was left unchanged. Dr. Wily's 4th attempt in world conquest ended in defeat at the hands of Mega Man. Dr. Cossack who was blackmailed into working for Wily went to work for Dr. Light. Suddenly a vicious army of robots is released and bent on conquering the world. Dr. Light is Kidnapped in the mist of the attack. Mega Man rushes to the scene and finds a yellow scarf of his brother. Could Protoman have turned evil and what would drive him to turn to evil? Is this really Protoman or is an old foe at it again? Mega Man heads out to stop the carnage and find answers to his questions.

Okay the original Mega Man 5 story line was great. It offered suspense and mystery. That makes a really great story line. In addition, a plot twist did not occur till later in the game. So I was glad to see the makers of this hack not change a thing. Thus, I give the story rating a 9 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 8

For this to be a hack the controls are amazing. The colors match up with the backgrounds very well. I also like how some of the stages were remade with different colors then the original Mega Man 5. The original version had a lot of color to it. It was good that the makers of this game made it colorful. I also like how the stages were remade with different layouts. Moreover, the sprites were nicely done for this to be a hack. However, there were a few lags in this game. But the lags are very minor and not many occur. After all, this is a hack so I would expect a few lags here and there.

The controls were mostly good but did have some issues. There are some times in the game were the controls seem like they want to freeze up. It does not occur regularly but they are a few spots in the game it occurs. When the controls freeze up it can get you hit or cause you to fall into the pits. Aside from the freezes the controls are mostly smooth. Not quite as sharp as the original game's were but good. Therefore, I give the graphics and controls a good 8 out of 10. The minor lags and few spots the controls freeze bring the rating down a little bit.

Sound: 10

Mega Man 5 had an awesome soundtrack. The music was just awesome. When I first got Mega Man 5 I would sometimes pause the stages to listen to the music. Even the game over tune is nice to listen too. So getting game over was not so bad due to the awesome music. The other sounds were amazing too. Mega Man's charged buster shot sounds like a cannon letting you know your shots are doing damage. The enemies sounds let you know they mean business. So, how does Ridley Hack I compare to the original in terms of sound? Well the sound was left unchanged. So since the sound was not changed I stand by my original rating of a perfect 10.

Replay Value: 8

Mega Man 5 Ridley Hack I was fun to play. I actually enjoyed playing this hack. Now do I play it as much as the original? No, because the original game was just special in its own way. But this is a fun game to play. I really like how the stages' layouts were changed. It makes it seem like your playing a different game and the makers of this game were aiming to offer something different. That is why this is a hack you will go back and play. Thus, I give the replay value an 8 out of 10.

Depth: 9

Mega Man 5 had a lot of depth to it. In fact the game was infamous for having lots of secret areas to explore, having to backtrack and go through the stages again, and lots of items to collect. This version keeps all of that but unlike the original version the stages have been made longer. It takes awhile to master the stages and often times you have to revisit them to get all the items. So yeah this game is going to take awhile to beat. I like games that have a lot of depth it makes playing them fun. Also it keeps the tradition of Mega Man games having lots of depth to them. So I was happy to see that the makers of this game did not remove the secret areas. I have played some hacks were items and secret areas were removed. Therefore, I give the depth  rating a very solid 9 out of 10.

Difficulty: 8

The original Mega Man 5 had some difficult spots but it wasn't that bad. I can't remember what I gave the original Mega Man 5's difficult rating as. I want to think I gave it a 6 or a 7. So how does Ridley Hack I for Mega Man 5 compare? Well this hack is more difficult but nothing unbearable. Some of the other Ridley Hacks of Mega Man games would really bury you. Mega Man 4's Ridley Hack I, II, and VI were known for that. This version of Mega Man 5 is not like that. But if you play this game do be prepared to be challenged.

Enemies can sometimes be a problem in this game. A lot of the enemies are in very tight spaces making your ability to dodge difficult. Also some of the enemies are right over pits. The stages have been made longer. You will have to go a long way before you reach the checkpoint or midpoint as it is sometimes called. You could die in a stage thinking you got very far only to find out you have to start at the beginning. Another thing that makes this version difficult is item placement. In the original game the items were easy to get too most of the time. Not in this game they often require skills, problem solving, and use of special weapons to get. In fact, sometimes getting a special item will cost you a life. Furthermore, the controls as I mentioned are good. But there are a few spots in the game were the controls seem like they freeze up. When this occurs it can cause you to get hit, fall into a pit or land on spikes.

The reason I do not give the difficulty rating a 9 or a 10 is for a few reasons. First of all, despite the enemy placement Mega Man's buster shot fully charged is very powerful. It can really clear out enemies in tight spaces. In addition, the game gives you lots of extra lives. Come to think of it I remember the original game being very generous on giving extra lives. While the enemies can be tough at times. The Robot masters can be tricky but they are not too bad. In fact even if you do not have the Robot Masters weakness a fully charged buster shot will do the same amount of damage. Its like the game is trying to help you out. Thus, I give the difficulty rating an 8 out of 10. Its more difficult than the original game. But its not unbearable like some of the other Ridley Hacks out there.

Overall Rating 8.6

For this to be a hack it was a really good game. There is a lot this version of Mega Man 5 has going for it. It may not be on the same level as the original version. Again, though I want to reiterate that the original version is just special in its own way. Ridley hack I has a lot of good things going for it despite its few flaws. Before I talk about the flaws I will talk about the positives.

It seems like this version was trying to offer something different and new to Mega Man 5. Changing the colors and stage layouts was nicely done. In fact one could easily forget they were playing a hack. I think that is what the makers of this game were aiming it. It really shows how this game took time to develop. I really like that as it shows creativity. On the other hand, the game also retained the classic feel that Mega Man 5 had. The plot, sound and depth were left unchanged. Its also like the makers of this game wanted to make you seem like you were playing a new version of Mega Man 5 but without removing the classic feel, which made Mega Man 5 great to begin with. In addition, I like how they upped the difficulty. Making the item collection a total effort is nicely done. I really like games that offer a challenge. Also, this game was very fun to play. I certainly had fun playing this game and this is one I will play again.

Now for the flaws. This game had some minor flaws to it. Again though they are very minor and I expected a few flaws this being a hack. The main flaw is the controls freezing up in certain spots. It does not occur a lot but when it occurs it seems to be at bad times. I have had the controls feel like they were freezing up while fighting enemies in tight spaces. I have also had them feel like they were freezing up when trying to avoid falling into pits or landing on spikes. When the controls freeze up it can get you hit or send you to your death. Also there are a few lags in the game. This can cause you to miss a jump and send you falling into a pit. So these two things are the main flaws to this game.

Overall I give Ridley Hack I of Mega Man 5 a very good rating of 8.6. As I mentioned this game has a lot going on for it. Its a good game to play and if you want something different then this game is for you. Like I mentioned earlier it offers something different to the original game. The flaws that this game has are very minor. The freezing control and lags only occur in a few areas so that should not stop you from playing this game. I would recommend this game mostly to everybody. The only people I would not recommend this game too is new Mega Man players. The game is not unbearable in terms of difficulty. But for a new player it might be to difficult. I would recommend new Mega Man players playing the original game. The original Mega Man 5 is a good starting game as it gets players used to the controls. Otherwise I think this would be a good game to play. I hope you take time out to enjoy this game and that you enjoy it like I did.
