Across many cultures, flowers tend to have certain meanings although some people also don't quite care about those meanings and choose to like the flowers anyways. Most of us know that red roses usually stand for love but fewer people know that in olden days, yellow roses were often associated with some of the more negative emotions such as jealousy. Over time, some of the meanings seem to have changed (for the yellow rose, it now also supposedly means friendship, probably for marketing purposes) but many people still turn to flowers as a way of expressing their feelings for their significant other as well as friends and family.

Thus, the question is... do you know the meanings behind the flowers that you send to other people? Does the meaning even matter to you at all, or do you just select one that you think your recipient might like?

Also, do you have a favorite flower and what is it?  Did you choose the flower because of the meanings associated with it or because you simply like the way it looks and smells, among other reasons?

Personally, I love roses and lilies because they look pretty to me and they usually stand for love, innocence and purity. I also love cherry blossoms although they always make me feel sad on some level (that feeling of transience), despite being so beautiful when their petals are swirling everywhere in the breeze. Call me old-fashioned, but I love flowers and receiving them, and I very much enjoy trying to figure out what subliminal(?) messages the senders could possibly be trying to send to me, intentionally or not.

Hmm; I didn't know any of this, that flowers had certain meanings. I think this is interesting now.

Anyways I always liked honeysuckle for their scent.

Well here in Scotland the Thistle is used as a symbol of our country. It is a nice a nice flower to look at but avoid touching it at all costs (might say something about the Scots). The story behind it was that back in 1249 King Haakon of Norway's army tried to surprise the sleeping Scottish Clansmen by sneaking up on them overnight. One of Haakon's men accidentally stood on the small flower and shrieked in pain which alarmed the Scots and took out the Norwegian surprise out.

I remember reading Shakespeare and other traditional European authors in AP English in 12th grade and we had an entire test plus essay portion revolving around remembering what different flowers meant in the different time periods. There is symbolism with flowers, herbs, trees, and other plants and they all mean something so we always had to keep a lookout for flowers and things of a botanical nature.

I think, "Why not just say what you mean instead of hiding behind petals and stems?" But that's just me and I'm not artsy by any stretch of the imagination.

The interesting thing is I always got gardenias for my high school dance dates because they smell wonderful and they explode visually. Gardenias outclass all the other flowers the other girls wore and my dates always appreciated the effort.

But, gardenias don't stand for anything, last time I checked. Hmmm.

I was reading up on the meanings of some of my favorite flowers. I actually had no idea flowers had specific meanings. That's really cool!

My favorite flowers are irises, peonies, cactus flowers, honeysuckle, thistles, and sunflowers. I love almost all flowers though, I like to garden.

I really like the meanings a lot of my favorite flowers have. Thanks for agetting me curious enough to look it up, Yuna!

My fav flowers would be daffodils I have a thing for them some reason. Just seeing those flowers bring a smile to my face whenever I come across a few of them or a lot of them. I looked up the meaning of it and I have to say it made me to chuckle a bit of what was said.

Ya know, I never actually thought flowers had a meaning, that'll be something I look into over the summer.

Peonies are really the only flowers that stand out for me. Plants like roses and Sunflowers are nice, but they're very generic. Regardless, I like all kinds of flowers.

I like daffodils, sunflowers and moss rose. I don't know if they have special meaning. They are just easier for me to grow. I usually grow a  pot of moss rose for the county fair but also have some in other container outside in yard. This is first year to grow sunflower seeds for fair. It is supposed to be the giant kind. I tried to grow marigold from seeds but failed. I also like peony since we have some in yard that grow back every year. That's about all I know about flowers!

I knew flowers had meaning behind them, I just never invested much time into learning exactly what they were.

I've always loved Greek Anemone flowers. From what I've read, they can symbolize fading hope or being forsaken, or on a lighter note, anticipation for something. I love how they smell as well. Maybe I'm a little old fashioned in this regard, but I do like getting flowers for someone I care for deeply
