“Don’t fall in the water, I saw someone peeing in it.” Yep, that’s just about what this game is about. Battleblock Theater is another game by The Behemoth, the developers of Castle Crashers. When I played Castle Crashers I thought it was amazing, the music and everything worked together in great ways and I thought it would take a while before I would play another game that was as funny and clever but I was wrong because I feel that this game matches that and then goes well beyond what that game was capable of. This game is just ingenious in everything that it does, whether it’s the hilarious animations, the amazingly addictive sounds and music, or the dialogue which in itself is amazing, and at times can be just down right ridiculous. For the longest I have been seeing my friends talk about the game a lot and I have even seen a couple small videos of them from a few random YouTubers but I never could have thought that it would have been this good. At least now I know why the game was nearly 2 GB to download while most of my games were under 1 GB, because the game simply had so much.

GRAPHICS 9/10

The graphics are hilarious. If you asked me, what I would compare them to, I would pretty much saw it looks like stick figures both on steroids and drugs. Most of the time, the animations are really fun. I love how the game is essentially a stage. It’s made to look like the level is actually a play that other people are watching, which means that some of the stuff that you see isn’t actually real, well except for the stuff that kills you, like, well, everything. You have things like curtains that close, and one of my favorite parts is how you have some items that because they aren’t real are held up on sticks and look like they are little puppets which I think is a great touch. The animations are great, the colors work really well, and even the expressions of the characters are amazing. One thing I really like is how for some of the guys, they don’t move but the lines that make up their faces move around which I find hilarious. For the most part, the graphics are as good as they can be and get a 9 out of 10.

SOUND 10/10

Just like in Castle Crashers, there is some great music, but unlike that game, this one has so much more. First off you have the regular sounds of the game which are really cool because pretty much every little action in the game has its own sound whether it’s jumping, running, or simply dying. A lot of these sounds give more depth to the game and make it a more pleasant experience but at the same time, a lot of the sounds also add a lot of comedy to the game and that’s something that the game is big on, so pretty much just using the regular sounds alone would give this aspect a respectable grade, but there’s so much more than just sounds, better things too. The music is great again, there are so many unique songs that are so much fun to listen to. Each song has its own mood and style, which make it awesome because in some songs you have this hilarious style that makes you laugh and fits in well with the game but then you also have a few songs that sound energetic and are just fun to listen to even when you aren’t playing. The variety and number of songs is amazing and make this one of the best soundtracks I have seen from a PC game.

Beyond the sounds and music, you have the voice acting which is just as good, if not even better than the other two. Let’s talk about the narrator who is telling you random things throughout the game play and also tells you bits and pieces of the game in various cutscenes. The voice is loud and clear which is not something you always see in a game because most of the time the music and game sounds will drown out the voices or they will sound muffled. As for what’ actually being said, that could be the funniest part of the game because no matter what is said, whether it’s something that can help you in the game, or a good old fashioned joke or insult, you’re bound to laugh and that’s another reason why I like this games audio so much. One of the things I like the most of games is audio because if you can’t hear the game, it can’t nearly be as fun and this game has great audio and this section gets nothing but a perfect 10 put of 10.

ADDICTIVENESS 10/10

Oh boy is this game fun to play. Even if you fully beat a level, this is the kind of game where you will go back through a level just to get a kick out of all the comedy. I mean heck, two of the top 5 tags for the game on its steam page include comedy and funny, and Wikipedia lists is as a Comedy Platform, so really it’s like both playing a game and watching an awesome cartoon at the same time, and isn’t that what you want out of life? To bring your two loves together? Just playing the game for its comedy is enough to give you hour upon hour of uninterrupted fun, but it’s also a fun game, which adds even more fun to the fun. See how much fun it is already? A lot of fun. There’s so many fun things to do in the game that if you beat all of the levels, it would be really hard for you to put down the game for good because you know that you would always want to keep playing it because it’s one of those games that has that kind of appeal. Overall, It’s addicting and this category is another one that gets a perfect 10 out of 10.

STORY 8/10

What’s the game about? It’s about a bunch of “Friends” who become shipwrecked on a strange island that’s apparently run by cats… wait for it… evil cats, yes that’s right, it’s grumpy cat times a million. You along with everyone else is captured and you are put through various levels in a theater, get it? YOU ARE THE SHOW! You are put through a series of dangerous levels for the cat audience to enjoy and every now and then a series of cutscenes led by the narrator tell you various pieces of the story such as the history of the theater, what the cats are doing with everyone and about various powers that eventually lead to chaos as the story progresses. Even the story is hilarious to watch, I mean, CATS! Who wouldn’t love a story about power obsessed cats? Me neither. The story is great and goes well with everything else about the game and for a grade, this aspect is going to get an 8 out of 10.

DEPTH 10/10

Usually the depth of a game is measured by the number of things the game has, or sometimes by how big one of the things is, like instead of a hundred levels, one really big one. In the case of this game, it has a little bit of both which makes the depth of the game awesome. First, you have the number of levels that you can play through, which is split among Chapters and acts. Though some of the levels, especially at the beginning can be quite short, there are a lot of levels for you to go through, with each chapter having 10 main ones and a bonus 3, so all in all each one has 13 and there are 7 chapters in total. SEVEN! That’s nearly 100 levels in total. You have that for single player and then you can also play it with a friend so that’s cool and on top of that you can choose to do those levels on the normal difficulty or on a hard one, which is cool. Beyond that, you also have different game modes such as an arena and a features section with two other modes which together add so many more levels to play.

Beyond the actual playing of levels, you have your character customization where you can change pretty much everything about the character that you play as from the weapons you have to the color of the character to even the shape of their head which is a great feature. Beyond all that, you have the power to create! That’s right! You can create your own levels, *ahem* plays, I guess. You can create something that’s small like 15 blocks by 10 or something massive, as big as 40 by 30. You have the power to create anything you want, the types of terrain, how many things that you can collect, and how many enemies there are and where they are. You know what this is? It’s Super Mario Maker for people who can’t afford a Wii U! All that together gives you dozens of hours of levels to go through and another dozens of hours of creating and destroying levels, and of killing yourself over and over again. There’s only a few other games I can think of that have more depth than this, and I have seen some pretty big games so that’s saying a lot. Overall for depth, this game gets another perfect 10 out of 10, and even some extra credit on top of that.

DIFFICULTY 5

The game isn't really that hard if you know what you are doing. Some of the controls might be a bit hard to get used to but other than that, the only thing you need to worry about are the enemies which can be a bit quick if you don't attack fast enough but other than that you have nothing to worry about. Each level has various checkpoints scattered around so if you die you just get brought back there and you just keep trying until you can get to the next checkpoint. There are a couple of upgrade things that you can buy but the only thing that you need in order to beat the game is patience, if you fail at a level you just need to keep trying. For the most part, the game is pretty easy, and as for a grade, difficulty is going to get a 5.

OVERALL 9.4/10

Overall, I would sy that tho game is a lot of fun, one of the most fun games that I have played on PC, and definitely one of the funniest ones as well. The game has a certain charm to it that will keep making you come back to play it over and over, and that's probably what I'm going to do actually. This is the kind of game that you can play for hours on end and if you are the kind of gamer that likes to play platform games then I really suggest this one because you can't go wrong with it. For a game that focuses so much on comedy, you wouldn't expect it to be this much fun really, but it is and because of that, the overall grade for Battleblock Theater is going to be a 9.4 out of 10.

Wow, you REALLY had me interested in this game. I have never heard about "comedy platform" before, but it sure sounds like a blast. I would have loved an example (or video) or two to illustrate what you say, but the review was excellent nonetheless. Well-structured, full of details and you even make a few comparisons with other games from the developer.
