So I just came to find out today, that a lesser known YouTuber that I've been subscribed to for a long time, but rarely followed his videos, posted a video today that informed me he's making a "Remake" of this game to be played on a windows platform.

Originally this user was known as one of those horrible AVGN knock offs that became so rampant like 8 or so years ago, but more recently has started remaking some NES games. Other than this Faxanadu project, he's also completed a remake of Dr. Jeckyl and Mr Hyde (NES) as well.

Anyways, back to the subject at hand. This project was funded on Kickstarter and he's recently made a demo available for download on Windows for fee so we all can play it. Originally this was a Kickstarter perk for those that funded, but he's gone ahead and made the demo available to everyone starting this week.

Fans of the original notice that it looks very close to the original game. He says that he's "expanded upon the levels and bosses and added items" I haven't played the demo yet, but based off of the gameplay he showed in the video, it looks like a rom hack. He insists that it isn't though, so I'll be interested to play it and see. He did state that the game has 3 save slots, so you shouldn't have to worry about Passwords or anything like you did in the old game (unless you played it on an emulator)

He also stated to me directly in a YT reply that the controls are way better and that the graphics run at 60FPS. Fans of the original will take note of the promised revamping of the controls. The main sticking point of the original to me was how the jumping would often feel "stiff" especially if you had to attack at the same time. Similar to Zelda 2 oddly enough. Which is a game that's very similar to this one.

Anyways, it looks like a cool project. One that I can get on board with. As of now, I think the game will be free when released, but I will update that information as I get it.

One note, he said the game needs to run on a 64 bit Windows platform, so keep that in mind.

I loved this game though I honestly don't remember it very well. I do remember spending hours playing it and not being able to beat it.

I'm very interested in a remake though. The complaint about controls does ring a bell. Makes me want to try it out again just to see how much I remember.

geeogree : Yeah the original game is a pretty unique title on it's own. Not too many side scrolling RPG's from this era. This game plays very similar to Zelda 2, although it's a little more linear.

The creator of this remake says that he's expanded the game to take advantage more of the "metroidvania" type style that it was kinda supposed to have, although it was very basic. He's redoing the boss AI as well, so the whole thing will be kind of interesting.

Close enough to the original to keep all the charm, yet different enough to fix some of the original bugs and still be a whole different experience. I hope that he does more of these.

Yeah, I just downloaded it and tried playing but the controls on the keyboard aren't very well laid out for me and I don't have a controller around right now to play on. It's probably somewhere else in the house and once I find it I'll give it a real try.

I do like this sort of stuff. Some of these old games got little to no exposure but were pretty good games overall. It's nice to see stuff like this happening.

Awesome! I used to really love this game as a kid but the controls used to frustrate me.
I gotta give this a try. Maybe I'll finally beat this game like I've been meaning to for years. :3

I still haven't had the chance to play the demo of the game yet. Things have just been busy with the holidays and all of that. Probably gonna play it some tonight as I'm sure the Demo is pretty short.

Do you know if the demo is the full game?

This game deserves such a remake. There are a lot of beta items which you can actually obtain in the game, but don't do anything because it wasn't finished. In fact, two of the obtainable items actually degrade you instead of upgrade you because of a simple programming issue.

When I reviewed this game, I was really loving the baseline it provided, and I felt like it laid the grounds for a truly epic experience- it's just it didn't quite execute for me, though it was pretty amazing for an NES title. (Why didn't this game spawn a series?)

The game was only worth a 7/10 to me, because of how simple the sword combat was against other enemies, and the fact that three of the spells all acted the same. But other than that, the game had amazing music and graphics for an NES title.

I loved the Nordic influence in the mythology and building of that world.

If only it were a bit more complicated and involving I bet I would have given it a 9. And this project seems to be what would do it.

I never really played this game. But I am happy for the remake. It will mean the fans of the game will play it again after many years. I find it quite sad that I never came across to play this game when I was younger. :/

tRIUNE : I actually saw that, but according to the remake designer, he's funded and going ahead with the project. He's made several comments on his video to that effect so as of now I'm assuming he's going forward with it. I left another comment and he's replied in the past to me, so I will post any updates when I see them.

Vanelan : I'm glad that you are interested! The original was cool, but I do agree (like I mentioned before) the controls at times seem stiff, especially when trying to jump and use your sword at the same time.

Awesome then if he's going forward with it, I would like to play a remake of this since I played the original when it was 1st released ages ago. It was and is a cool game.

I am not liking Konami more and more these days... all their decisions seems to be affecting their fans more than anything.

I really hope this project is able to continue without Konami interrupting further.

Hey guys. I uploaded some raw gameplay footage of the demo. Have any of you played around with it yet? What did you think so far?

This is the first I've ever seen this game. I look up some videos for it, and it seems like a lot of fun. I can't wait to see the remake.

Jordanv78 : I've seen the original game, and this remake looks like a lot of work was put into it. It's a lot more fluid than the original, and it's got a much larger view as well, so you probably won't have to worry about flip-screens like in the original, although I have yet to play it. I actually might play it.

Did anyone else get a chance to play this demo yet? If so, what did you think of it so far? Are you excited for the full game to be released? Is there anything you thought really needed to be improved??

I just wanted to point out to those that were interested, the finished product is up and available for Download. I haven't had the chance to play it myself yet, but the Demo was pretty cool.

It is nice to see the lesser known NES games get a second chance. Faxanadu was a fun game and deserves a remake to show people how great gaming was back then.

Oldschool777 : Yeah it's fun to see some people take a shot at making sequels (or in this case a "remake") for lesser known games like this. While this Faxanadu remake isn't perfect, the beta did seem to address many of the minor annoyances I had with the original.

I've started playing the "Finished Product" of the game and while some of the control issues are fixed, there are some minor annoyances I have with this remake. First of all, the music, while passable, isn't really that great at all. Although it does sort of pay tribute to the original, it comes off as bland filler. A more retro type mysical theme would have been way better. This is neither great modern music or great throwback music.

If he was going to remake the menu, I don't understand why he didn't make it so you could arrow right/left in the menu easily.

Again these are just first thoughts. So far it's a decent game. Certainly worth playing for fans of the original.
