Hello, vizzians! Welcome back to another thready of Zelda! This time, we will be talking about something which is a bit weird. You vizzians heard the question: What's up with the eye in the Zelda series? For those who don't know what I'm talking about: Haven't you noticed that in many zelda games, most bosses weaknesses are their eyes? Take a look at Gohma, Bongo Bongo, the bosses in MM3D, or whoever. It seems that Zelda developers sure are obsessed with eyes . But, can someone please explain me the true reason behind this? Nothing against the developers, I support that idea, in fact, but I just wanna know why there's an eye in almost every Zelda game.

The Eye of Horus comes to mind, which is associated with Egyptian religious history, and legends. Some revere that same eye as a Satanic Symbol and Lucifer himself is referred to as "The all seeing eye" by some people.

I personally think it's just a generic association with evil, and a softer satanic symbol used just because. I don't think that they planned anything significant.

Dark knight of the blackened sun. I am Sword Legion, one of many. My mask is thick, and my armor is strong. All the more necessary in a world such as this. . .

greenluigi : It could also mean in Psychology ideals that if things are made by Japan (I think) that people in Japan focus on the eyes and then people in United States are focusing on the smile or mouth. I actually might have these two psychology ideals mixed up, but it to me could be that reason why people who see games created by Japanese companies and people that maybe those Japanese industries were the ones that made the game and then later translated to English game companies.

I always assumed it was because the enemy can't attack you if they are blind. Plus a lot of "Eye" enemies would use some kind of KAI when summoning Adds or Attacks.

Now I'm interested in the official reason! lol

Sword legion :

I always kind of assumed that eyeball was just because that's almost always been a clear cut and obvious weak spot. Even perhaps a bit of uncreativity. Although the fact they added giant glowing eyes as weak points in Majora's Mask 3D is a bit of a strange addition. It may be just me, but I don't know if there was very much thought put into it on Nintendo's part. On one hand it would be interesting, but on the other hand...They are people too. They probably didn't thoroughly plan on everything you know?

I wonder what the character limit on this thing is.

Perhaps Nintendo likes to use the eye because it's an easy way to find out a weak point of any weird thing like Gohma. And it works well, every Zelda games has a Bow with Arrows or the Slingshot. I don't really understand all the eyes in Majora's Mask 3D but makes more sense than hitting the armoured parts of the bosses. Overall I like the eyes in Zelda games, they are asking to feel my Arrows.

TornadoMudkip : But, aren't they making their weak spots a bit obvious? I mean, it's like the bosses are saying 'Hit me here!'. And, yeah, I like damaging bosses with my arrows :3.

greenluigi : Maybe they do but I think also for other bosses. Lets take a look at bosses with no eye weakness. The main item you find in the dungeon is the thing you need to beat the boss. Examples: King Dodongo is hungry and wants to eat bombs, Twinrova doesn't like to look in the mirror with their weakness. There are exceptions like Bongo Bongo (you can't use Hover Boots to beat anyone actually). Things work fine this way if you ask me. It wouldn't be good if you need like 3 minutes to find out what item you need to beat the boss.

I have to agree with some of the other statements made in this thread. The eye is common in a lot of games, not just zelda. In most games the "eye" "heart" or "brain" is the weak spot in most early game bosses.

I believe that this is because the "eye" is very important in not only ancient egyptian history but also religious texts as well.

You can find the significance behind a lot of the other eye symbols in the Zelda franchise on Zeldawiki - Found here - http://zeldawiki.org/Eye_Symbol
