What are some video game essentials that you feel every gamer should play before they die.

Also say why you think it is an essential video game that everyone must play.

You can talk about as many games as you would like to, and can talk about the same game that someone has previously talked about if you'd like to, and please, no spoilers!

I can't believe this thread hasn't gotten any replies. It's one of the more interesting questions I've seen posed in this particular forum in a while.

Toejam & Earl
-Why
It's awesome. Seriously though, it's an entry level experience into roguelikes, and procedurally generated levels is something every gamer should experience at least once because it's an amazing experience, and for me has resulted in almost fifteen years of replaying TJ&E without ever getting the same game twice. It literally adds endless replay value to a game with good, fun mechanics.

Also this was a big part of gaming culture in the nineties. As such, it's a great experience for everyone to try this game in multiplayer mode.

I could list more (and if this thread picks up in popularity, I will) but I don't want to ramble so I'll call this good for now.

Eirinn : Thanks for replying to the thread Eirinn. I will definitely check out that game!

I thought that maybe I should put down a game as well so here I go.

Super Smash Bros.

-Why?

Super Smash Bros is a fun crossover fighting game series, where characters from all different Nintendo series come to battle it out in a 4-Player,(up to 8 players in smash 4) free for all to the death! Unlike games like Mortal Combat or Street Fighter, where you have to deplete your opponents health bar to win, in Super Smash Bros, you have to knock them off the screen! Everyone gets a damage percentage counter, and the more you get hit, the more your damage percentage goes up. If your percentage is high you will be knocked back farther away by attacks so you will want to block as much as possible. Also something exclusive to Smash is that you get items, like a pokeball that will spawn a random Pokémon to eliminate your foes or a hammer to slap them the heck off the stage. Smash is the most fun multiplayer fighting series, and definitely the most popular. The Smash series have really innovated the fighting genre, all of the games in the series are a blast to play and if you have not played any, you aren't a true gamer.

I've gotta say The Last of Us. It's just expertly done on every level I can think of. I often describe it as, "The cutscenes are like watching a really, really good movie, and the gameplay is like playing a really, really good movie." XD.

Seriously though, the mature themes are handled so well, the characters are absolutely believable, the voice acting, the gameplay, the emotional moments, they'll torture your emotions such a powerful way (For me, at least.). There are very few games that have made me cry, but this game has so many moments, all pure emotion.

Now, I realize it may not be for everyone, but this is one of the few games I would even consider a Masterpiece... I just kind of hate the multiplayer though. XD

Super Mario Brothers 3
It's one of the best designed platforms of all times. I'll admit, it was a toss up between this one and the first... but the third seemed like the "finished" version of the first. So many other platformers have drawn from it, yet it never lost it's impressive game play, even compared to the more modern ones.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
While Super Mario 64 was the defining 3D game, OoT which came a little later was, in my opinion, 3D games perfected. It laid the groundwork and model for countless other Zelda games after ward. The puzzles and game play where spectacular... the game was no longer ABOUT being in 3D, it was about being really good.

More to come.

And I'm back! This time I'm bringing a modern game to the table.

Batman: Arkham Knight
Action is one of the genres that best capture what gaming was meant to be about I think, and if a genre can be perfected, then this game did just that with the action genre.

Now I have never been a Batman fan, and this game looked "meh" to me. I didn't understand why everyone was so insanely hyped about it, and never planned to even consider trying it....then I bought a PS4 and this game came bundled with it, and for the cheapest price, so that changed things. This would at least hold me over until I could afford a good game.

But boy was I surprised.

I had high hopes for the new generation of gaming, and playing this game fulfilled them. From the first free glide down to the streets, I was in love. Then the fighting mechanisms were great. And these are things common to the Arkham series? No wonder fans were so hyped!

The Batmobile is amazing. I was hesitant about it's tank mode idea, but it was the final touch that really perfected the game.

The gadgets are insanely fun to use. I mean what isn't fun about remotely sabotaging someone's gun so that it jams when they try to shoot you? And then they rush for the weapons crate you electrified and two people end up rolling on the floor: them, because they have high voltage flowing through them, and you because they have high voltage flowing through them... and their vocal and visual reactions are downright hilarious. x'D

Then the ability to strike when they least expect it and grapple back up before their allies see...or hide under floor grates and pop out to take down four or five guys in slow motion before they have a chance to shoot you. I mean the action is so great.

Add to that enemies that are so intelligent and realistic that it feels more like you're playing against a person than a preprogrammed AI. They think and respond to your movements and techniques: grapple up in front of them, and they just might plant sticky mines on the higher vantage points so you can't use them anymore...use the grates and they'll set the ventilation shafts ablaze in hopes of burning you alive or at least effectively rendering the grates unusable. If you strike from above they can tell by looking at a downed comrade and the angle he fell at. Same for attacking from underground. This game is smart, man.

Then the story...oh my gosh, if this doesn't go down as one of the best told stories in any form of entertainment, it'll be injustice. I kid you not. Before it's over you'll find yourself on the verge of tears, picking your jaw up off of the floor, being genuinely upset at the baddies, actually feeling betrayed by friends, wondering who will survive - if anyone, and be wondering what is really happening and what isn't...if any of it is happening. This game will play with your head in some big ways, and that's not a good thing...it's an amazing thing. The impossible happens time and time again. Things happen that didn't actually happen...it all makes logical sense in this entirely illogical way. You're not crazy though...or are you?

But I've raved enough. My ramblings can't do this game justice, you just have to play it through to understand. This is new gen gaming perfected. It will go down as one of the greatest games of it's time at the very least.

Batman arkham asylum

because that game is really amazing my fav part of it though is scarecrow....I haven't been able to fully complete it but I hope one day I get too. Also I may try the other batman games one like eirirnn mentioned.

also another game you have to try is called destiny

this game has a lot of mixed reviews. But by far it is the most amazing fun game I have ever played. Great graphics. And especially the gameplay of it as well. You should be able to find one good thing in that game you are good at like. For me vanguard missions. For my bro it would be crucible missions. I say try it out it may be something you like to do. Its a multiplayer game you shot and hunt to kill by helping your team out. I don't like that type of missions. Vanguard is to team up with other two guardians  and take on by killing lots of enemies and such.

Super Mario Bros for the NES. You can't call yourself a gamer or someone who loves Mario if you haven't played this game once.

Everyone deserves know how awesome the Mario franchise is. This game, the beginning of the adventure style Mario games, is the best place to start looking for a beginning ''gaming career''. The gameplay is classic and can be still found today in modern games. An example would be New Super Mario Bros U. Actually the whole game is classic, nostalgic and the game returns back in a way in modern games which is really awesome if you ask me!

Hehehe... X3 This is a toughy... Every console has a few games that have to be played...
For Sega Genesis I'd say Gunstar Heroes, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Shadow Run...
Gunstar Heroes is B-E-A-utiful and plays so smooth... It's my favorite "action" game.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles... It's my favorite "platformer" of that generation hands down.
Shadow Run Is like Skyrim and Fallout 3 had a 16 bit baby, I mean come on! (Favorite "RPG")

And about Mario Bros on Nes... you can't call yourself a gamer til you beat that imo. ^^
I had a Nes as my 1st console, and Mario Bros was 1 of the 1st games I got for it.
The very first was T&C Surf & Skate, but I wouldn't recommend that to my worst enemy.

Wow so many new replies! Edit: for some reason I can't space out these sentences and my summons don't work. ;(

F.Starr : Just last month I went to get my hair cut and the hair dresser told me about how great The Last of Us is! Will definitely check that game out when I got the cash.
Light Knight : Playing Ocarina of Time right now and it's great!
Eirinn : Wow, Batman Arkham Knight sounds great! I love a game with good AI and it sounds like they're geniuses! I also love a game with a good story and it sounds crazy good! I'll check it out if I ever get my hands on a next-gen console.
Eniitan : Destiny sounds cool, I've got lots of friends that play that game, might check it out.
TornadoMudkip : Just beat Super Mario Bros recently, lots of fun! I'm also working on 100%ing Luigi U, probably the hardest mario game i have played besides The Lost Levels.
b.tokin : Just bought a Genesis recently and have beaten Sonic 3 and Kuckles, my favorite sonic game. I've heard great things about Gunstar Heroes and will definitely get it although i've never heard of Shadow Run. Will check it out.

Story-wise, I think The Walking Dead: The Game Season 1 is necessary for all gamers to experience.
Gameplay-wise, I think Pokemon is a wonderfully engrossing experience that quite literally anyone can and should lose their self in.
