Anyone want pizza ? nah just kidding but today we are taking a trip down memory lane. I will be reviewing Yo Noid. Yo Noid was based off of Domino's Pizza mascot the Noid. The Noid was popular in the 80's and early 90's. So Capcom made a game featuring the Noid Character.

Story: 5
Mr. Green has used his lackeys to take over New York City. Mr Green's goons are causing havoc in the city. The mayor calls on the Noid as he is the only one that can stop Mr. Green and his lackeys. The Noid is armed with a yo-yo and pizza. The Noid sets out to put an end to Mr. Green's trouble. In the mean time he must win pizza eating contests and defeat Green's forces? Just who is this Mr. Green?

The plot here had so much potential but I feel like it got lost somewhere. The plot does a good job introducing the Noid. We know from the plot that the Noid is a good guy and likes pizza. We also know he is a good guy. But the plot unravels after that.  Who is Mr. Green we do not know who or what he is. All we know is he is the bad guy. But unlike other good plots the story does not tell us his motive. Its like this plot had potential. I mean using the Noid as a character was creative but its like they didn't get so creative in developing the rest of the plot around him .

Since the plot did a good job of introducing the Noid that counts for something. However, the story line falls apart and is not that great. I really like plots like Mega Man games that are detailed and show creativity. So I give the plot a 5 not horrible but could have been better.

Graphics & Controls: 8
The graphics are fairly good in this game. I mean they are not as good as other Capcom games like Mega Man. But this game had decent graphics. The colors in the background were nicely done. The water in the game looks like water. The Characters look alright and the sprites are nicely done. I like it how the sprites show when a Noid east pizza that is a nice touch.  The scrolling stages do have a lag. I do not know why that is.  I wonder if the game might have been rushed.

The controls is what keeps this from being a 9 or a 10. While the controls are mostly good they can be sluggish at times. I found the controls to kind of lag and feel sluggish when the Noid is riding on certain items (helicopter, Pogo etc). It just seems like the controls are not as smooth when using certain items. When the Noid is not riding on things the controls are decent. So at the end of the day I give it an 8 out of 10.

Sound: 7
The sounds in this game are decent but did have some issues. The tunes to the game were for the most part good and fit the stages well. The sound the Yo Yo makes when it collides with enemies sounds about right. The pizza eating contests are decent and sound humorous at times.  But why oh why did Capcom have tingles in some of the stages. It literally sounds like nails on a chalkboard in some of the stages especially later on in the game. I do not like tingles and that really brings the sound down in this game. Capcom makes very good games and so I do not know why there was a tingle in this game. It brings the rating down to a 7. The sound is good but could have been much better.

Replay Value: 6
The replay value is not horrible but not very special either. This game can be fun to play and I did enjoy playing it. I remember playing this game when it first came out and enjoyed it. However as I got older the charm just seemed to wear off. This game is not like Mega Man, which is a staple among Capcom games, and has a lot of charm to it. Mega Man is just a special game. I know its in a league on its own but I thought this being a capcom game it would have the charm. I think what hurts the replay value is the not so clear plot and that the stages are short. Don't get me wrong this is a fun game its just not one of my top favorites. It is fun when you start but the fun can wear off. I give the replay value a 6 out of 10.

Depth: 7
The Depth in this game is pretty good. The stages are short so that is what brings the rating down some. But the game makes up for it by including several items one has to pick up to advance. Failure to pick up an item could mean loosing the game at the end of each level. If you lose the game you have to repeat the stage again. Items are a must to pick up and they are hidden sometimes. You will be required to check out every stage and pay close attention. The stages as I have stated are short but there are a lot of them.

The problems with the depth are the short stages. I like games that have long stages and require you to search and look everything over. Also even though they are items to collect there is not a bunch of them. I mean you are not going get any power ups, special weapons, and other stuff. The items are mostly cards that you can use at the end of each level. So at the end of the day I give the depth a 7 out of 10

Difficulty: 8
Despite the stages being short this game is difficult. To me the difficulty really shines in this game. Enemy placement is the main problem but it is different than any other games. In most games enemies hit you from behind or bombard you on the screen. The enemies in this game are placed over pits and in tough spots. Most of the enemies are placed near spikes or over pits. So it requires creativity and skills to get past these areas. Also what makes the game difficult is the Noid has a short health bar. Getting hit once can result in loosing a life. So you will need to avoid getting hit at all costs.

Another thing that makes this game difficult is Noid's Yo Yo takes several hits to knock out enemies. So you want to keep your distance from enemies. Because one shot from them can cause you to loose a life, but it might take 3 shots from you to take them down. The pizza eating contests are puzzles and require creativity and skill to master. That is why it is important to pick up the cards as they will help you out. The cards will really help you in the latter.

So while the game is difficult due to the short stages, and the fact that enemies do not bombard you on the screen though they are place in tough spots keeps the rating down from being a 9 or a 10. Also the game does give you cards to help at the pizza eating contests so that is like a gift. At the end of the day I give the difficulty a 8 out of 10.

Overall 7.8
Yo Noid came out in 1990/1991 just right when the NES was starting to slowly decline. As around this year the new and more powerful SNES was just coming out. The Noid was a popular mascot for Domino's Pizza chain in the 80's and 90's. I remember the pizza commercials from that time frame. Capcom thus made Yo Noid based off of the pizza character.

As I stated I played this game when it first came out. I enjoyed this game at first as it was different from Mega Man or Mario games that I played around this time. Before I get into the negatives I will start with the positives. This game was different from Capcom staple game and mascot Mega Man. It was like Capcom was trying to offer something different and at the same time do some advertising for Domino's. This game did have good graphics, the difficulty was good, and it does require some creativity to beat though. I like games that require creativity. I like how the theme is pizza I mean who does not like pizza !

Now onto the negatives. It seemed like this game had so much potential but got lost somehow. The plot started off good but then fell apart. We did not learn who Mr. Green was or his motive. I know they were trying to focus on the Noid but they could have introduced the bad guy better. We also do not know why the Noid was chosen by the Mayor. As the game says only the Noid can stop Mr. Green. What makes the Noid so special that could have been explained better. The controls in this game could have been better. I know I got spoiled with good controls from Mario and Mega Man. But for a 1990 NES game I was expecting more. It seems like the controls at times fit an earlier NES game.  The lag in some of the stages can be annoying as well.

Overall, this is a decent game it just has some issues. To some gamers these issues would be very minor and most probably would not have a problem with this game. Is this game in the same league as other Capcom games certainly not. Is the game a horrible game by no means. It is a good game and maybe those who grew up in the 80's and 90's will enjoy this game. It just feels like something was missing in this game and could have been better. I wonder if they tried to rush this before the SNES came out. But then Capcom made Mega Man 4 and 5 which came out after this game. Those games had very good graphics and controls. So it is puzzling why this game had some of its issues. It could be because unlike Mega Man the Noid is not really Capcom's specialty. So it could be that Capcom did not put as much quality into this game as they did their trademark games. Would I recommend this game. Despite the games flaws I would recommend it because it offers something different. As I stated it is a good game it just has its flaws. At the end of the day I give the overall rating a 7.8
