Out of curiosity I wanted to know what battle system is the most entertaining in RPGs for you guys. Do you like the classic turn based battles in like in games such as Final Fantasy? Or maybe more strategic turn based like in games like Fire Emblem? Maybe you prefer more open world real time combat? Many of these all have little interesting things to make them stand out from each other  and are not limited to the games I mentioned as examples so you could also say what your favorite take on one of them was.

I'd have to say my favourite style is turn-based. However, not the way FF does it because bleh.
I suppose what I'm actually more thinking of is a mix between real-time and turn-based. Quite frankly, I love how all of the Mario RPGs handle the turn-based combat system, and combat in general.
Instead of just selecting a move and relaxing, you are kept constantly in the battle by using action commands to both hit harder, take less damage, avoid any damage all together, or counter your opponent. Even with special moves, you have to stay on your toes to make it effective.
This involvement makes it harder to get bored with the game.
One other thing these games do that I wish more RPGs did *coughPokémoncough* is they don't have random encounters! Every enemy you face on the field represents a battle, so if you don't want to fight, you can just avoid the enemy and be homefree!

I like the "boring" old turned based the best. Sure I like strategy turned based, but for some reason, my favorite are the 3rd person, side-view turned based, with NO time element. I like it when there are lots on menu and item options, so it's not just "attack, attack, attack".

I think this is because the first JPRG I played when I was a kid was Final Fantasy III for NES. You had four characters and a job system, with lots of items, and it was a straight up turned based. I think that is what turned me onto that type.

Turn based is nice for when you need to be distracted multi-tasking, or just want to go to the bathroom any time you feel like it. But personally, Final Fantasy's Active Battle Time period. I dig that.

Gamin'Gal said most of what I planned to say, so read her post.

I like action RPG battle systems (Legend of Zelda for example) because I like for games to test my reflexes and force me to think fast. There's something so fun about finding yourself having to readjust your strategy mid-battle, and develop your battle patterns and movements on the fly all while focusing on the here and now action.

Come to think of it, Action-RPG may be my favorite genre...that or sim or Platform.

And much like Gamin'Gal said, the Mario RPGs manage to make the turn based battle system immensely enjoyable for me, despite my typical dislike of turn based battles. They add elements to keep me engaged instead of leaving me feeling like I'm just waiting on the text and animations between my menu clicks to finish.

Interesting thread on a genre divided in so many different directions by the way.

My favorite battle system has got to be from the Grandia series. The series has slightly different styles throughout, so I'll just focus on Grandia III. It's turn-based but active, meaning that while you are deciding on your actions, the enemies aren't waiting for you. So, you have to choose quickly. In addition though, you have all sorts of move-cancelling attacks, to counter your enemy moves. The whole combat is focused on move cancels. So, if you have some characters with decent speed, and time your counters well, you can win entire battles without letting the enemy have even one turn. It's SO satisfying.

My personal favorite RPG battle system is hands down turn based because most of my favorite RPGs are turn based such as Pokemon, Final Fantasy, and the Mario RPGs. The only strategy RPG I love is Fire Emblem Awakening that's it. So yeah, I say turn based RPGs are way better.

My favorite has to be the turn based battle system from mother 3. You have a scrolling health bar so when you take enough damage to kill you you can still live if you heal yourself fast enough, also when you hit an enemy you can tap a to the beat of the battle music to get combos.

I'm personally a fan of real-time turn based a hybrid of turn-based and action, where different attacks, item uses and characters have different cooldown times. It keeps you actively thinking and I feel it's more strategic than standard turn-based.

When it comes to action-rpg I feel that it removes too much feeling of strategy for me so I'd rather just play an hack and slash action game like Bayonetta 2 which when playing you benefit from fighting strategically for example Love is Blue hands with Scarborough Fair feet (personal favorite weapon setup due to better combos comparatively to Quad Love is Blue) ppppk or well timed pppkkk during witch time would serve you better than a full pppppp combo.
