Hey,everyone! Me monster here and I’m back with another game review! Finally concluding my Mario Land reviews. The last one was nearly a year ago, so you could say this was long overdue.
Now, this time it’s for: Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3
For some reason, completely unlike the first 2 mario land games, this one was never pick up and play for me, I had to take time out of my schedule to play it.
This one can maybe not even be counted as a Mario land game, because it doesn’t really play like any 2D Mario game at all, it’s a lot, a lot different. If you change the name, wario and the plot, you would not know that this is a Mario game. However this game spawned a long running series with many games. I am not going to review them all, but I think I’m going to review some, and this is one of them! The game was released in 1994, and sold less than its predecessors.
It is all up to debate as to why it sold less, it could be because it doesn’t star Mario, or because it doesn’t play like Mario , but that doesn’t really matter, what matters is that this game got most favourable reviews of any Mario land game. And will I give it the most favourable one? Well, let’s find out.
Graphics: 10/10
This game had very good graphics, like Mario land 2 it has large sprites that look absolutely great, and very detailed. The game looks quite stunning and also has fan hacks adding colour, which makes it look even more amazing.
Now, I have to stress that this is the Gameboy, a system that is not known for its graphical abilities.
Animation again impressed me very much. Unlike the first Mario land, there was no second that the graphics created problems in the game, it didn’t make it harder, it only added to the game!
There is also some comedy in this game’s graphics, because this entire game is out-there and random.
This game’s over world also looks really fantastic. Maybe it would have been nice to have some colour, but hey, it's the gameboy so that's not possible.
There is really not much to talk about here.
Story: 7/10
This game’s plot is so stupid and out-there, that it just makes it awesome.
In Super Mario Land 2, Wario loses his castle to Mario. Of course he wants to, replace the castle. So, wants to steal a golden statue of Princess Peach (Or, toadstool whatever you prefer) And wants to eventually sell it, to get a lot of money and get his own castle.
This might not seem like a stupid plot, but the things and characters that you’ll come across in this game, are definitely a little bit stupid and out-there.
Again, there Is really not too much to talk about. I could talk about the things that happen, but will just mess up the fun you have, and spoil the story in the process
Addictiveness: 6/10
This game is definitely addicting. But, for me at least, not as addicting as Super Mario Land 2.
Maybe it’s because this game’s gameplay doesn’t hook me, like a Mario game does. Or maybe it’s just the different characters.
That being said, though. I really still like this game, but like I said, it wasn’t very pick up and play for me.
I have no issues with the controls, whatsoever. They are responsive, and overall solid.
This game was fun, but after a while it just wore me out.
I never really had that with Mario land 2.
That brings me to the gameplay. It’s quite fun, and different.
Super Mario land 2 played on a modified engine of Super Mario Bros. 3. Wario land, plays nothing like that.
This can really hardly be called a super Mario land game, since it doesn’t even star Mario (He does make a cameo at the end, though)
Enemies without any sort of hazard cannot harm Wario, so one of the game’s main enemies can actually not harm Wario. Instead this game implements some puzzles with those enemies, they don’t break your brain, but they are still fun.
One of the game’s biggest features, is its transformation system. You have Bull wario, Dragon wario, Jet wario and small wario.
These are key to continuing in the game. They definitely add to the game as well.
That’s it for the addictiveness. While this game is not as addicting as Mario land 2, it is still somewhat entertaining.
Sound: 6/10
This game’s sound.. It’s a mixed bag, really. I felt that the music from the first games, especially the first were a lot better. I don’t know what it is, but this music just really doesn’t appeal to me, to be very honest.
This game’s music is very comparable to the music of the second one, which I like. However, I do think that the music is very fitting, which is a good thing.
This game’s sound is hard to explain, well at least for me. It uses very bare-bone sounds in its music, but that doesn’t make it bad. Mario land 2 did this too, but that music just appealed to me more.
The sound effects are great, classic Wario sound effects. Not a lot to talk about.
Difficulty 7/10
This game was considerably harder than Mario Land 2. That being said, Mario land 2 was a rather easy game. It is around the same difficulty as the first Mario land game, however this time around it isn’t because of problems in the game.
Mario land 1 had some bad graphics and the sprites were all tiny making it hard to dodge obstacles, however Mario land 2 fixed this, but it made it too easy in the process.
I think that this game absolutely nailed the Difficulty part, I think it’s perfect for a 2D platformer.
Bosses are very challenging and will take you more than 1 try to beat. There are puzzles which are fun to solve.
This game has the distinct honour to be the only Mario land game without some tricky platforming.
This game really isn’t focused on the platforming, it is more focused on, how do I defeat this enemie, or dodge the obstacles. Which really isn’t bad at all.
It is a lot of fun, and pretty difficult at times, too. The controls are great, and the graphics don’t make problems either.
Depth: 10/10
Wow, just wow. I thought a Gameboy Mario game couldn’t get any longer than super Mario land 2, but that was false.
This game is pretty dang huge. There are seven worlds! All with its own unique theme. You have SS. Tea cup, Rice beach, and mt teapot just to name a few.
See, I told you this game is crazy. Anyway, the transformations also add to the depth here, the enemies are all unique, and every world is completely different.
The only things to say, are. This game is really big and there’s a lot to do.
Memories: 4/10
I just remember playing this on a bus when I was really little, Not much.
Overall: 8.1/10
You could say that this is a little bit harsh, considering all the praise I gave this game, but I still feel that Mario land 2 is a better overall game.
The music was really just OK to me, the gameplay was fun, and the controls were good.
I feel that this game could’ve been better… now, I’m not planning on reviewing wario land 2, but I am planning on reviewing either the virtual boy game, or wario land 3 ..
See you next time everyone!
Summon time!
