Hello folks. This is a review of Destiny of an Emperor 2 and is also my first so
be gentle and hope you all enjoy this. It took me quite awhile and I have put a
lot of thought into it.

Destiny of an Emperor 2
Release was late 1990's but never in the U.S. ( was however translated to
English as a Rom patch in 2000 )

I don't know what others would rate this game but here is my opinion on what
it should be rated :
Overall : 8.
Graphics : 8.2
Sound : 7.6
Addictiveness : 8.3
Story : 8.8
Depth : 9.5
Difficulty : 8.4

It's an overall good game with surprising depth to it.  The game is loosely based off the Romance of the Three Kingdoms games. As with the first game alliances will change, betrayals will occur, surprise events can happen anywhere, and this makes the game storyline more compelling as well as kicking you in the butt when you think you have it made. Also as with the first game any character not in the final battle is free to be recruited to your war party. Of course the recruited also only applies to those that do not die in the game.

The only other notable games I could compare such depth to would be maybe Inindo: Way of the Ninja and maybe Dragon Warrior 4. While you don't get the luxury of recruiting generals in random battles like you could in Destiny of an Emperor, you do get to build a better army with more available characters ( Like 25+ different ones that level up as you do ). Unlike the first game ( Destiny of an Emperor )  you get to follow a more truthful timeline of course it still has some fictional aspects like the first one but not as many, not just straight up going from one castle to another without much option of anything else. Most of the characters you saw in the first game carry over, and so do a lot of spells and weapons, which veterans of the game will like a lot.

In this game the characters have their own personal weapons like : axes, swords, bows, spears, etc.. Destiny of an Emperor 2 also had many improvements over the original game as far as : It was larger in scale, longer hours of game play, has a more convoluted plot, a bigger amount of exciting battles ( in which generals now have terrain types they fight better on ), more caves to explore, more items to use and gain, and in my opinion was a overall improvement over the first game. Which was by no means a slouch of a game at all. In fact I still think it to be one of the better retro strategy/rpgs of all time ( in my humble opinion of course ).
It's not as straight forward as the first game where you knew where to go 96 % of the time. In this one you can get lost quite often and do a lot of wandering and grinding as you go trying to figure out where to go.  Some of the caves can be annoyingly tedious and the battles are slower but in my opinion more engaging.

Another cool thing I saw in the game was the Gym you can find in towns. This lets you level up by paying gold but I tended to avoid it most of the time, going to the tried and true ( if a bit boring at times ) grinding a lot.
While you aren't able to recruit the 100 or so generals like you were in the first Destiny of an Emperor ( I know a shame ) , the thirty four ones that you do get to recruit go up in levels with your army.  this gives you more better options at the end of the game because each of the 35 characters provides their own unique input, instead of having 8 or 9 generals that go up levels to choose from like you did in the first one. There is also more varying tactics to use, a new stat agility added, and arrays which is a system put in to arrange your characters to boost attack/defense and such. I don't know that much about arrays so I would advise you to look it up online and get some insight into it if you plan on using it much.

Now with all this good stuff to look forward to I do have to warn you that the game does have glitches, some minor misspellings, etc.. I'm sure there are cheats and stuff you can use in the game to be able to beat it easier but I will not be going into that ( as I am sure you know how to find it for yourself online ).

To sum up this review : I know I took forever ... just kidding ... the battles are a
bit slow ( slow feeling controls ), lack of clear direction can be a bit of a
hindrance at times ( but good for grinding levels ), the added bonuses to the
game over the first one definitely make it more unique, and with proper
looking into for need to know information ( arrays, new stats, walk throughs,
cheats, etc..) then  you can bet this game is as fun ( if not more than ) the first
game.

Hey Brain! It's nice to see you've attempted a review, and you've put a lot of work into it!  Since you wanted my opinion, here is my critical feedback. Don't take it too hard... it's only meant to help you improve!

1. I think you wrote this somewhere else and then copy pasted it here?  I say that because the formatting is all messed up, and this problem usually occurs when you paste content into vizzed.  For example, many of your lines are broken  between multiple lines when they shouldn't be.  (i.e.  "Hello folks. This is a review of Destiny of an Emperor 2 and is also my first so" on one line... then the rest of that sentence on the next line.)

2.  I see that you rated each category, but I'd suggest an adjustment.  Either move those ratings to the top of your review so people immediately know how you felt, or split the review into sections. List each category and rating, then ONLY talk about that category under that rating. For example:

Graphics : 8.2 out of 10.
I liked the graphics because...

Sound: 7.6 out of 10.
I didn't rate the sounds that high because...

3.I liked most of what you had to say, but I felt like a lot of it described aspects of the game instead of listing its strengths, weaknesses, attractions, and put offs. I think this is because you talked about many features without saying if you liked them or not. Why did you feel the way you did on certain issues?

I think that's all the feedback I really have. You did a really great job, so don't think my feedback means I wasn't impressed!  Good luck on future reviews (if you plan on completing more)!

Brain-Splattered : I am a huge fan of the War of the 3 Kingdoms, so this was a delight to read. I can see what Singelli is saying, and I succumb to using that approach alot as its the universal accepted way, but I like your approach is not so cookie-cutter.  The ratings are there, and that looks fine to me. Formatting might be a little funky, but its a good review!

Singelli : Hey thank you for the feedback. Yeah my first and maybe my last because I can tell I am not much for structured writing. I prefer freeform as you can tell because I use a text file on my computer ( saved in a folder in my documents ). That would be why it is so choppy and out of whack. If everyone thinks they are too off or messed up to read and enjoy then let me know ( so I can spare y'all my amateurish attempts ). Don't get me wrong I ain't being pissy about it or anything. Just doing this for fun because I felt like trying one to see if I could. I moved the ratings up like you said. I'll look at it and see what I feel like changing around and seeing if I can clean it up. Pretty much done with it for now because I am tired of altering and rewriting it. Been working on that for about 10 days and going cross eyed looking at it ... know what I mean ? I just tried to keep it broken up so it wasn't all big long boring stretches like some of my post you have told me about that I do. Oh and by the way no offense was taken ... seriously ... thanks for the review. I'll work on it as I can later on. :O)

Brain-Splattered :

Good review - in the future I'd break down the review a little more into different sections (ex. reviewing graphics, gameplay, music etc) instead of lumping it altogether into one big paragraph - it makes it easier to spot the key points.

Nice review! Really good for your first one . You used a lot of descriptive words and summed the game up pretty well. Although, like Ace102 said, I would break it down into sections, like gameplay, music, plot, etc. Whenever I write a review, I do it like this:

OVERALL: 10

introduction

Story 9
description

sound: 8
description

Graphics: 7
description

addictiveness 6

Depth: 5
description

Difficulty: 4
description

Conclusion

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

That's how i do it. Of course, you don't have to follow it that way, but it's a suggestion. You should do it the way you want.
