Hello everyone, Laian here and welcome to the new walkthrough. I honestly didn't know which game I was gonna play this time. I delivered a PSX game involving Christmas called «The Grinch» and it was fun so I didn't feel like playing another Christmas involved game. I like Christmas, I like winter and snow but I hate catching a cold and, trust me, I've been sick during this month. So I decided to play a short game for Gameboy called «Castlevania 2: Belmont's Revenge». In this game, you play as Christopher Belmont and your mission, like the good Belmont you are, is to eradicate the Lord of Darkness, Count Dracula. However, his castle won't appear until you get rid of the first four castles: the crystal castle, the plant castle, the rock castle and the cloud castle. There's no specific order to complete them. You can choose the one you wanna take care of, as long as you do the job correctly. And by that, I mean you kill the boss at the end of the stage. All four castles destroyed will make your main objective appear: Dracula's castle. So let's start without wasting any more time. The walkthrough will begin with my favorite castle: the crystal castle. Then, the plant castle, the rock castle and the cloud castle. Finally, we go in the last castle after all that hard work put into the first castles.

CRYSTAL CASTLE

Right at the beginning, you'll find a power up in the very first candlestick. Kill the crow, then use the platforms to make your progress, grab some hearts in the candlesticks and the axe in the last one at the far left of the screen. Go up (because down below, it's sudden death and you lose a life), get the second upgrade for the whip, kill the bat, use the rope to get on the platform, kill the other enemy from here, break the candlesticks to find the holy water and a coin then go through the door. That's the first checkpoint of the game. Everytime you die, you restart at the last door you went through. The candlestick underneath your actual position contains an axe. You may think it's a pot roast, sadly no. Well, unless you are really clumsy and left-handed, you can't really die at this point of the game. So hiding a recovery item in this candlestick would be useless. If you want to get that item, use the moving platforms and the pillars to get there and break the candlestick. Otherwise, carry on, kill the armor with its spear, then the mermen, grab the hearts in the candlesticks and go up. That new creature has an ability you will dislike. It shoots a projectile that permanently steals a power up of your whip. In other words, you have the last level of the whip (the level 3, which is the whip shooting fireballs at the enemies) and one of these damn projectiles hits you. Well, you lose that level 3 and your attack power goes down to level 2. And it's permanent until you find another upgrade for the whip. Fortunately he is alone in this room, keeping the next checkpoint, some goodies and an extra life. Yep, there's an extra life in this room, hidden within these walls. Don't cross the door or else you won't get it. See that tile above the door (1)? Break it and the life will be free. Now, go ahead and open the door. Go down, use the jump button to go down quickly so you won't be murdered by the spikes and use the passageways to stop your progress. There are goodies to grab such as an axe at one point. When you reach the room with the eyeballs, jump and blast the upper wall in the middle to find another secret extra life. Open the door, go up first, get rid of the bats and blast a part of the lower platform to find a pot roast then go up. You can go down in the previous screen if you want to but there's nothing really interesting besides sub weapons, hearts and gold coins. Kill the enemies, go down, meet the jellyfishes (another annoying enemy... they drain your hearts everytime they hit you), go down, break the part of the wall to find a pot roast, kill another enemy and open the door. The music changes, that means you will face the boss of this castle. Use the platforms, grab the goodies in the candlesticks and get ready to rumbleeeeeeeee! That boss is not hard in spite of the giant dark cloud in the sky that keeps chasing you. The boss appears as a crystal before revealing his true form and unleash a thundershock from that dark cloud. You can only hit him when he is in crystal form. If you are fast enough, you can hit the boss twice then get away from him on order to avoid the upcoming attack. The thundershock is not that scary and hard to avoid. Like I said, you can easily get away from the sorcerer after one or two hits in the face since the shock has a short range or leap over it. Don't stand underneath the cloud though. Just don't do it. After a few hits, victory will be yours and the crystal castle will be destroyed. To the next castle, we go!

PLANT CASTLE

Kill the frogs, grab some goodies and open the door. Carry on, go down, then to the left. The bridge will be destroy if you kill the eyeballs so I suggest you to leap over that enemy when there's a space above your head or you can go down and get rid of the other enemies. Either way, go up then kill the bats and open the door. The platform to the left in the next room hides a pot roast. Get it if you need to recover some health and climb up the ropes, killing all the creatures you'll encounter. Right above the door, in the next room, there's another pot roast. Now open the door. Carry on, go down, kill an eyeball to go down, blast the tile above the door to find a pot roast (2) and open the door. As you can see, the next enemy is a spider and creates a string. It's not important for the first part of that screen, however it is in order to make the gap after the small bridge. Wait until they go down and kill them to create your path to the next screen. The last one must be really low so you can get the extra life hidden within the edge of the platform. Open the door and go down to face the boss of this castle. Make your way through the enemies, grab some goodies and face the boss. Yes, they are two this time. The twin guardians. They have two attacks. They lower their spear and they spit some projectiles you can destroy with the whip or the sub weapon. Speaking of sub weapon, if you have the axe, it'll come in handy for this boss fight. You have to hit their head with the axes and your whip. Use the moving platform to reach their head. Watch out, the projectiles have the ability to push you out of the platform and you might fall into the blade of the spear. You can hit any head you want, they have the same common health bar so it shouldn't be a problem. However, you need to wait until he moves forward if you wish to use the whip. After a few hits, the boss will be beaten and that castle will be destroyed.

ROCK CASTLE

That castle is quite challenging to be honest. Make your way to the door at the far right of the screen, killing the mudmen and the bats. Go down, kill a bat, then the creatures coming from the holes (those can be really annoying) and, once you reach the other rope, break the upper left part of the wall to find a pot roast. Now, you must use the moving spikes to go up. Be careful, they are deadly and deal half of your health bar so don't get hit by them and don't get close to them as well. In the next part, you must deal once more with these annoying bouncing creatures coming from the holes. After the door, go down, use the moving spike to go back up and open the door. The two next screens are kinda challenging. The room will be in complete darkness for a few seconds, hiding the pits of instant death and awakening the creatures scared of the light. You must take your time and move slowly to reach the door. There's an extra life to get before the last floating platform nearby the door, right above your head. That next part is also challenging. Go down and you'll see why. The spikes go up and down. I don't have to tell you it's instant death if you touch it. In order to make the first part, wait until the spikes go up, jump on the platform, crouch and wait once more until the spikes go up. Go to the other side, crouch and wait until the spikes go up once more to go down. This time, you can skip these spikes if you want to but you'll have to sacrifice the axe at the other side. Go down, kill the creatures and go through the door. Time to face the boss. Grab the goodies on your way to the boss' lair. This boss is not that hard. Ok, he has two forms, the second one appearing when he is half life. The first part is easy, just avoid the sword attack and whip him hard until he shows up his true form. Off the armor, you have to face some kind of thin bird skeleton with the sword. He is a bit more nimble and jump from time to time. He also shoots two shockwaves from the sword: one when he is jumping and another one after he did land. Stay away from him when he bounces (or go underneath him), crouch and use your whip to get rid of him. That castle is done, time to head to the next castle.

CLOUD CASTLE

Kill the crows, open the door at the end of the hallway, kill the moving armor knight and go up. You can grab the ropes in the next room but you must hurry up because, once you're on the rope, it will go up. Also, watch out for the spiked ball. Go up, using the ropes to reach the next door. Now, you need to go up with the rope again but there's a difference: gears are controlling the ropes. Watch out for the movements of the ropes and make your way to the door up there. Time to face the boss. Jump from platform to platform, get all kind of goodies, kill the creatures... well, be prepared for the upcoming fight. Behold the twin skeletons snakes. It doesn't matter which head you hit, as long as you avoid their projectiles (which can also be destroyed) and the exchange of bones between them (which can't be destroyed, sadly). The platforms are there to help you in order to avoid their attacks but you can also go to the far left of the screen, crouch and avoid the flying bones. This fight shouldn't be hard. After a few hits, the boss will be defeated.

DRACULA'S CASTLE

That castle appears once the four castles are destroyed. It's a castle divided in three parts. Actually, the map shows two parts but there's another one. Let's go in the castle and put a end to this without wasting any more time.

PART 1

The courtyard of the castle is full of crows and guys throwing scythes at you. You got used to the crows, the other type of enemy is new. You just have to avoid the projectile and whip him hard with your weapon. Use the platforms to make the gaps and open the doors at the end of the courtyard. Use the moving platforms to grab the rope to the right, go up with the platforms, kill the enemies and blast the upper part between the two giant bats to find a pot roast. Open the door, go down and, right before the other door, blast the lower ledge to find another pot roast. Open the door, go down and open the next door to reach the boss' lair. Don't even bother to go up, you'll be trapped in an endless loop. On your way to the boss, you will fight some mudmen (and collect some goodies as always). The boss is quite challenging but I highly recommend you to stay to the far right of the screen. As you can see, the boss will come from these strange holes on the ceiling and on the ground and the screen will move forward to the right. That is why I suggest you to stay to the right. And don't get trapped by its body, it's really important. Its weak spot is the head so, everytime its head pops up, hit that skeleton snake with your best shot and, after a few hits, your opponent will be defeated. To the next part of the castle.

PART 2

That part has a familiar tune for people interested in classical music. You can hear the «Passepied» by Debussy. It's originally a tune played with a piano from the "Suite Bergamasque" and hearing such a beautiful music in a Castlevania is surprising yet nice. You'll hear another tune later in this part, don't worry. That level is also a compilation of all the things from the other levels. For now, reach the door to the right, then go up. At one point, you'll have to destroy some falling spikes. Actually, you need to hit the mechanism a few times to disable it. And it's the second one. Open the door, kill the bat and go up. That mechanism should look familiar to you. Go up using the mechanism, open the door, use the strings made by the spiders to reach the next door. Blast the wall above the door to find a pot roast (3) and open the door. Are you ready for the boss fight? Do you really know who you're going to fight? If your answer is Count Dracula, you're wrong. You're going to face Christopher's son, Soleiyu. This boss fight is really hard. First thing to know: he will always stop in order to throw the three spinning swords. Second thing to know: his whip attack is really painful (and I'm not gonna describe how painful the swords are if you are hit by one of them). Third thing to know: holy water is probably your best ally for this fight. Fourth thing to know: if you are underneath one of the two platforms, he will always step on it. And last thing to know: he will never use his whip when he's jumping. Also, the music played during this fight is «Chromatische Phantasie» by J. S. Bach. Yeah, another classical music in the same Castlevania game. In summary, you should use the platforms to your advantage to escape from his whip attack and the swords. The only chance you have in order to hit him is exactly when he jumps on the central platform. If you jump and attack a second before he lands on the platform, you will get him. This fight needs a specific timing and some focusing. After a few hits, you'll be victorious and you will head to Dracula's lair.

PART 3

Grab some goodies and go down. Time to face the Lord of Darkness, Count Dracula. Good news: he has one form. Bad news: that fight is challenging. Dracula won't do his hellfire, his famous attack. No, this time, he will use some orbs spinning around him before going away. You have to avoid these orbs. They hurt a lot, I'm not kidding. The only way to hurt him is a hit to his head. However, it's not that easy, the least I can say. Make sure you hit him before he summons the orbs. If you're fast enough, you could hit him once more. After your hits, stay away from him. For example, if he is to the right, you go left. If he is to the left, go to the right. When he stands in the middle, it's a bit tough. Just pay attention to the moves of the orbs (if it's clockwise or inverted). I have no other strategy for this boss. You really need some focusing and a good timing to beat Count Dracula. After a few hits, he will perish and the ending sequence will appear. Congratulations, you completed «Castlevania 2: Belmont's Revenge».

Well, that's all folks. I see you, as always, in the next walkthrough. Until next time, take care

Laian : Nice on this game guide I can see that you worked super hard on it. If I ever play this game I'll have to look at this walkthrough because I'll probably get stuck a lot lol. Also how long did this walkthrough take you to make?

A few days for this one, like many others. It happens most of the time with short games and the ones I know like the pocket of my pants. Otherwise, I have one month to make it and publish it to the website.

Excellent review!

I like the use of pictures to show some of the secret locations.
