So, If you are a dragon ball fan, You would know that Akira toriyama is back finally. If you did not know, In a point of toriyama's life he was burned out from dragon ball and distanced himself a bit from it to do other stuff.

After a in my opinion actually pretty good Dragon ball GT, and some specials, Here is toriyama's return to the dragon ball universe!! Is it any good? Also, If I suck at making movie reviews, It's because i'm used to video game reviews.


Animation 8/10

The animation is really top-notch. It was the most smooth no doubt of any dragon ball z movie. It looks a lot more modern, And the result is actually really good.
However I was not really fond of The CG in this movie. It looked pretty good, But It was a bit distracting. And I feel that that a DBZ movie should be completely 2-d animated. I am okay if you just make a little bit of CG in the background if you really want it. But not objects in the foreground, It's distracting, Like the CG explosions. However on kai's planet with the fight with Beerus there was no CG and it looked better.

The animation gets a 8 out of 10.


Story 8/10

So how's the story? Well, It's actually pretty good. However, Toriyama is not known for his incredible consistency, But can you blame him, It's been freaking over 17 years.

So, here's the deal. King kai and supreme kai are scared as crap about someone that is coming to earth, Who is known as the god of destrucion: Beerus.

Goku hears the conversation king kai and supreme kai are having about Beerus, And naturally gets extremely excited.

Here's the catch, Beerus has been sleeping for over 30 years, and does not know about frieza getting killed, So his companion Whis, Shows him who killed frieza: Goku.

Beerus rememebers something about a super saiyan god, And believes that goku is one. He then tracks down Goku who is training on king kai's planet. He also tells goku that if he can't defeat him or at least be really strong, He will destroy the earth. However, Beerus is no ordinary Villain. As I will get to in the character category. Beerus also tells Goku about the super saiyan god, And trains for beerus, To prevent him from destroying earth. Meanwhile it's Bulma's 38th birthday party. And... The pilaf gang is freaking here! Yes the Pilaf gang from the original dragon ball. They are really funny and makes the movie more comical. Beerus eventually comes to earth, And Vegeta knows who he is, And I won't spoil why. But he also knows what beerus can do if you get on his bad side. So he tries to entertain him for as long as possible to prevent him from destroying the planet, Which at points is really funny.

If you are going in this movie, Not familiar with the Dragon ball universe, You will be a bit confused. The entire saiyan and frieza plot will  make your head spin. However, This movie was made for Dragon ball fans, Not for people new to it.

Overall I give the story a 8 out of 10

Characters 9/10

Now for the characters, Let me tell you. The characters in this movie are just great, Let’s go over them.

Beerus: He is the main villain in this movie, However.. Is he really a villain? He destroys planets, yes. But it is to keep balance in the universe. Without him, The universe would be out of balance. His personality is nothing like any Dragon ball z villain, Especially Movie villains, Who are just plain evil. (Bojack etc.) He does not kill everyone immediately he first wants to try out the food and party on bulma’s birthday party. He is the funniest movie villain ever in dragon ball probably.

Whis: Whis is Beerus’ companion who wakes him up from his sleeps, And goes nearly everywhere with him. We don’t know extremely much about him. But there is a reveal about him, That I won’t spoil. While Beerus was busy fighting with Goku Whis was trying out the different foods, He especially loved Pudding. And that leads to yet another hilarious plot point, Which again, I won’t spoil.

And than you have Goku, He’s just like always, A bit naive, And still some saiyan genes, Nothing has changed.

Vegeta: Vegeta is the same as always, However He is scared to beerus, Which at times is really funny.

You also have Tien, Krillin etc, They are all the same.

Overall I give the characters a 9/10

 

Fights: 8/10

No dragon ball z movie would be complete without some fights.

While there aren’t a lot of them, There is the final battle, Which Is the longest dragon ball z movie fight, This is also due to it’s longer run-time Than all of the other DBZ movies.

The fights are mostly really good, But the first two pretty predictable. There is that one awesome moment with Vegeta.

The final battle is definitely the best, It is long and just very entertaining, The choreography is really well done in this movie.

Overall a 8 out of 10

 

Sound 9/10

Now  for the sound, The sound in battle of gods is really good, The sound effects are really fantastic and Are really dragon ball, There is nothing else like it.

The music.. It was fantastic, With the design of Beerus being very Egyptian cat like, The music also really reminds me of ancient Egypt. It was very epic at times, It fit the entire movie so well, I loved it. There is no real other way to describe it, It’s perfect for this movie. Flow’s cover of CHA-LA-HEAD-CHA-LA is also very very good!

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods is one of the best dragon ball movies better and rivals the likes of Broly: The legendary super saiyan.

The characters are definitely one of the best things in this movie, Beerus and Whis are really interesting, And the entire god of destruction thing is also really awesome.

If you are a Dragon ball fan, You should check this one out. A 9/10!!

Thanks for the insightful review, I really liked the movie regardless of whether or not I liked the super sayian god form, personally I think they could have done a whole heck of a lot better on that form really, to me basically it just looks like a skinnier weaker kaio ken, (which is not a good thing in my opinion). It should have looked like the golden super sayian four form I think,, that would have been so much better looking, and sleeker. I like the whole concept of the multi verse though, I think they could do quite a lot with that specific area, I also like the whole concept of other gods out there ready to fight, I think that is a great idea that has a lot of untapped potential for upcoming movies, and or possible series, (which I really really hope happens down the line sometime I need my dragon ball fix, it's been too darn long). Another thing I like was that Beers wasn't really the most powerful enemy, which hopefully gives for more of a vast growth potential for more enemies than just the god's of chaos/destruction. One thing that really annoyed me in the movie was the lack of Vegeta going super sayian 3, I mean come on give him a break, they basically said he was stronger than Goku for that brief moment, let him at least achieve super sayian 3. He does deserve at least in my opinion. It would also round the character out in my opinion as well, giving him closure on the whole progression thing.  

Lycan212 : While I am a big Vegeta fan, I really don't know, plus in a recent interview the maker of dragon ball, Akira toriyama stated that Goku will never go ssj2,3 again because he found out that you can use that power in ssj1 and even base form, and that the other forms zapped too much energy, Thanks I really appreciate the good feedback. I also think that they could have done a better Super Saiyan God, it just looks like a fancy kaioken.

imamonster : Any time, I am a big fan of Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball, and the infamous Dragon Ball GT, so more than likely if there is a thread discussing something on Dragon Ball I am so there heh... 

I really liked Battle of the Gods. I thought it was great that it took more after Dragonball than DBZ. It was more focused on characters and humor than action, and I think that really worked in it's favor. Only thing I got somewhat confused at is *spoilers* how Gohan had his saiyaman outfit under his casual clothes, then has on Goku's outfit when he goes mystic. Was homeboy seriously wearing 3 layers of clothing?

I did like that Gohan's design in BotG is a nod to GT, and that GT is now officially non-cannonal. Yay!

Dragonball z Battle of Gods is my favorite movie ever!!!
