Hello and welcome to my guide to speedrunning Mickey's Dangerous Chase! As far as I know, only one other person seriously speedruns this game (Nudua) and we have competed with each other to bring down the time, but there is still room for improvement. As of the writing of this guide, I have the record with 12:30 (starting timing when you press start on the title screen and ending when touching the present after beating Pete, though admittedly the timing should probably start after selecting a character and end after the final text you have to scroll through).

If you're new to speedrunning, this game might be a good one to try because it has absolutely no randomness and is fairly slow paced.

It may help to watch along with my record breaking run while using this guide to more easily see what I'm referring to. You can watch it here.

--General Techniques--

Jump grabbing - It's slightly faster to grab and pick up blocks immediately after jumping. If possible, you should jump just before the block you're about to grab and grab it on your way up the jump.

Lag reduction - Game Boy can't handle too much, so the less enemies and items you have on screen at once, the better. You can't do too much about this usually, but it can help to kill enemies and grab items quickly on auto-scrolling levels to save time from lag. Note that as far as I can tell, RGR automatically reduces lag which would make any speedruns on it unofficial, but it's possible that other settings may not reduce lag in this way (or I might be wrong).

Life bonuses - Each level has four orb cards that will give you a life bonus at the end of the level. In a speedrun, getting this bonus takes forever, so you'll want to make sure to avoid at least one orb in each level so you don't get the bonus.

Text - Between levels, the text is kinda weird. You have to hold B to make it go fast, but then release and press B to go to the next box of text.

Jumping - Mickey is like Mega Man: if your toe is on a platform, you can still stand on it. Use this to your advantage to make long jumps by jumping at the last moment.

Full Health Points - For best results, you must have full health for Stage 2-3, 3-2, 4-2, 5-1, and 5-3.

Stage 1 - Mickey's Town

Part 1 - Head right, jump over the first dog, jump-grab the next block and immediately throw it at the dog coming down the stairs at you. It's possible to jump this dog, but it's difficult and laggy. Continue up and over the next dog and bad guy, then down the steps, up the windowsill and onto the roof to pass between both dogs. Go up the next steps and under the first dog, then jump up to the area where it was and continue to the right, avoiding the dog at the end. Jump over the bouncing guy and then grab the top block in the tower of blocks. Jump across to the next tower of blocks and drop down. Use the block your grabbed on one last dog and finish the level.

Part 2 - Jump on top of the first block and jump over the enemy. Continue right and hop onto the two blocks in the ditch, setting up to jump over the water that the fire hydrant shoots. Watch out for taking damage from the side of the fire hydrant as well. From the next pile of blocks, jump onto the awning above the door to avoid the next enemy. Use your skills to avoid the next fire hydrant and pits. When you encounter the next hopping enemy, take a hit through him (or bring a block in preparation if you got hit somewhere already) and jump from the second step down after the hydrant to avoid a dog. This last part is tricky: Hop onto the window sill, then as close to the edge of the blocks the dog is walking on as you can. Immediately jump again and you'll get hit by the dog but be boosted up to a higher level. Continue right and jump as far as you can to the right off of the roof to get to the end of the level.

Part 3 - After the first fish, go to the right to grab a star and orb in the air (to reduce lag), then hurry back to your starting position to avoid the next fish. After the rock, hop along the right edge of the screen to grab a star, heart, and invincibility as soon as they appear. Hug right to kill a rock, then move back slightly to hit a fish, then hug right again, jumping to grab two more items, then staying down to kill a rock and two more fish before your invincibility runs out and you need to go back left again. Avoid a fish, grab a star on the right, jump two adjacent rocks, dodge fish, and immediately jump next rock to get a full health heart that's floating up. Next, you'll jump between two rocks, avoid three more fish, and then rush to the right, grabbing one more orb and star on the way.

Stage 2 - The Woods

Part 1 - Jump-grab the first block and throw it at the top of your jump to take out a flying squirrel. Do the same with the next block to get rid of the second squirrel. Simply walk under the next three and then quickly throw the next block upward to take out a rolling nut. Quickly hop up the left edges of the steps and avoid the other two rolling nuts (good luck). When you get to a snake and some blocks, grab the upper block and carry it with you through the straightforward remainder of the level, then use it to kill a flying squirrel as you jump the final spike pit.

Part 2 - Jump on the bear's back and up to where the other bear is, being careful not to hit it. Continue right until you see two blocks on the same level as you, jump-grab one and bring it with you to use on the flying squirrel which comes down the steps at you soon after. (Backup strat: If you don't have the block, you can jump left and around the flying squirrel as you go up the stairs.) Run across the small gaps and jump at the right corner of the first pillar to avoid a ball. Avoid the next ball, fall into the pit and hop up the right side, grabbing a block for using on a flying squirrel at the end of the level. (Backup strat: If you don't have full health at this point, you'll need to refill for the next level. There's a full health card in the ?-Block at the bottom of the large pit in the bouncing ball area.)

Part 3 - If you don't have full health here, you'll go super slow and be doomed. Either reset the game and do it better, or kill yourself to start with full HP. To start, grab/follow the stars up, to the left, then around the second bird to get invincibility. After the invincibility runs out, you'll be passing a heart on your right. Once you pass the bird after the heart, cross to the right side and hang out there until you get to the top.

Stage 3 - The Mountain

Part 1 - Jump-grab the first block and kill the bird. Continue until the moving platform, then jump into the divebombing bird to damage boost off of it across the pit. Grab the heart from the ?-Block and take a hit through the bird above it (or duck for a couple seconds if you want to play it safe). Grab the next available block and carry it across the falling platforms (you have to jump immediately on these things, you can't jump once they start falling), then kill the prairie dog. Drop down, take a hit through the next prairie dog and go up, across the pit, and down the next pit past the ?-Block. As you fall, hold right against the wall to land on a platform. Continue up again, perfectly performing in-and-out jumps (hardest kind of jumps in the game). Drop down before spikes and then move over a bit to land on a platform. Jump over the prairie dog and drop down for a health refill before continuing up and over again. This time, be sure to only move over just below where the spikes are to land on the one-square platform. Continue past the last spikes, dropping down to one square past the spikes and quickly jump up on the moving platform to finish the level without missing the platform's cycle.

Part 2 - If you aren't at full health, use your discretion at avoiding damage. If you are at full health, take a hit through the first bat, then quickly go up the right side and use a damage boost from the second bat to reach the upper area. If you're fast, you can grab the next block and kill the third bat while you're still invincible from getting hit by the second bat. Hop across the falling block and take the middle path to get a block which you'll use on the second spider after dropping down. After the stairs, run off the platform to pass under a bat and land on a platform. Then short hop up to the next platform and drop down where the star is. Make a long jump to where the next falling platform is and ride it down (jumping immediately just won't work). When you see the next ?-Block, try to grab it while falling and still land on its platform to get a heart and quickly jump up and over to avoid a bat. If you can't grab it while falling, walk off the side of it and turn around and grab it. Drop straight down the next hole and continue right. Bounce across the spikes at the end to finish the level.

Part 3 - This level is pretty easy, just ride the "nice friendly birds" down and be sure to grab the full health from the right edge of the third bird. When Mickey's head passes the background scenery, you should be good to run off to the right and get to Goofy. If you wait too long, the bird will turn and hit you and if you go too early, you'll die at the bottom of the screen.

Stage 4 - The Industrial Area

Part 1 - Jump up, grab and throw the higher of the two blocks, and continue up and over. Continue right and back up again past the spiky ball. On your way down the next fall, hold right and grab one of the two blocks between the set of four, then immediately sway back to the left to land. Throw the block and clear a space for yourself to continue right. Take the lower path and hope you have the skills to grab that ?-Block without falling in the pit. Jump up and grab the next block. If you do it right, you can land on the platform next to it in the same jump. Clear your way up and right, dropping the spike ball in your way. If you need it, the ?-Block here has a heart in it. Go down the next blocks and avoid the spike ball in your way, then stay low and go up when you get to a wall, using one of the blocks as a platform. Trigger the falling block and grab one of the two lower blocks on the right side, but make sure to still land on solid ground in the middle. Clear your path and keep hopping up and right until you're home free.

Part 2 - This is the hardest level in the game. First of all, jump up and over the gear and keep making your way up. Short hop repeatedly across any conveyor belts that are going against you and drop down (but not too far right since there are spikes). Keep going along the obvious path and enjoy your first in-and-out jump with conveyor belts. If you're fast, you should be able to run right under the first few plungers, but otherwise, their pattern is two smashes followed by a pause. After the few spike pits and next in-and-out jump, you can get a heart if you need it from a ?-Block on the left. Short hop and tank your way through the next two plungers if you can, and hug right to grab the block next to the question mark block which contains another heart. If you can, feel free to bounce across the next spike pit to the succession of in-and-out jumps. At the top, you can get one more heart from a ?-Block on the left side. If you have two health (you really should have two health), jump across the spikes on the top to skip a decent bit of stuff. Continue right and if you can, grab the block to the right with a long jump and land where it is for a slightly faster exit. If you miss, fall down and use the block to hit a gear and finish the level.

Part 3 - Immediately jump up to the second level. Then the third to avoid the second car. Then back down to the bottom to grab invincibility. Hug right and go through two tunnels, then jump on the third. At the start of the "bridge", stay to the left as long as you can to give yourself time to jump across the falling platforms which you'll need to jump off of almost immediately. Wing it for the rest of the level. xD You can dodge the final car by letting it go over you and sitting where the last orb was, but make sure you jump up as soon as it passes over you.

Stage 5 - The Business District

Part 1 - Drop into the pit and grab the block (and, if you need it, the ?-block with a heart in it). Continue right across the spike pit and use your block on the bouncing tire. If you have full health, you can take a hit in the next spike pit. If not, you'll have to go up and over it. Wait to go under the next two tires, then take a hit (if you can) through the first two bouncing barrels, then short hop under the third one when it's at its peak. Jump on the vertically moving platforms and grab a full health heart from a ?-Block in the air. Take the upper path and then drop down under the final barrel.

Part 2 - This level is stupid until you memorize it. Go right and up the side to start. Wait where the first orb was to avoid a falling potted plant, then continue back and forth up the middle and right side until you reach smaller platforms. Take the middle ones and make your way up until you have to take a long jump to one on the right. Now continue up the right side, a little past the next orb, then take another long jump back left. Go up this middle path again, but watch out for another falling plant on the right side of a fork in the path. Keep up the strategy of going right and back to the middle until you get to the top and watch out for one last potted plant. You can't get ahead of the screen on this level, but you can get to Goofy a bit early if you jump up the last bit quickly.

Part 3 - Once you start going right, Pete will hop in and throw a ball. Jump over it and then continue. If you don't have full health, kill yourself for a refill. On the next rooftop, Pete will again throw a ball at you. On the third rooftop, Pete will throw a ball, run a little, then turn and throw a second ball. On the fourth roof, he'll do the same thing. Be careful as you ascend the final falling blocks since you can't jump once they start falling. When you get to the weird looking block, mash B and throw a block at Pete immediately. Hopefully, you can grab another before he hits you with some balls which you'll have to jump up and left around. You're going to have to tank this boss battle. Return to your block as soon as you can and throw one up at him as he jumps down on your head, keep mashing to through them to the right at him and up at him when he's above you. If all goes well, he'll die before you and you can continue to the right to finish the game!

Congratulations! Now you know not just how to beat Mickey's Dangerous Chase, but how to do it in the most time efficient way possible. Good luck, and have fun!

You are my hero.  22 posts so far, and all of wonderful quality.  3,000 words doesn't seem to break you into a sweat, either.  Thank you for another wonderful walkthrough.

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
