Released only on the arcades in the far east, the Japanese not only does crazy stunts on T.V, but in gaming as well. Giving us an interesting unique concept, they gave us The Funky Fist Fighter. To me, this is pretty unique because the control setup is just 9 buttons in the "Rule of Thirds" style. There has never been another concept like this and I give the Japanese props for coming up a brilliant innovation to the arcades.
The game play is fast and intense. You fight against sharks and dinosaurs! Now doesn't that sound cool? Any enemy can be at any direction and you have to push the right button at the right place at the right time. Know this, you have to have quick reflexes to get through.
The graphics are pretty decent and shows us the guts and gore when you kill the bosses.
Now almost every game has a set of flaws.
The game is way too easy for a button masher.
There are only 4 stages.
The story is as generic as ever. You are a generic blonde fighter rescuing a generic hot blonde.
At the middle of every stage, there is a "Quick Time Event". The reason I put it in quotes is because failing this is the only way to even lose. Meaning the "Quick Time Event" is the only thing that may go way too fast and lose your credit. *UPDATE* The bosses can take you down as well but it is way too difficult to even lose! All you have to do to lose a boss battle is to not do anything at all! Both the "Quick Time Events" and the boss battle are the only sections you can lose. But like I said, it's nearly impossible to lose one of these! The "Quick Time Events" do get harder every new stage, but you can actually lose good if you don'y have very fast reactions and reflexes. But if you lose a "Quick Time Event", you will get to continue where you left off but it's a possible chance that you will lose another credit faster than you can curse.
The only enemies are sharks and dinosaurs. Now is that "cool" enough?
The sound design is nothing much. Just lots of punch noises is what you'll be hearing the most.
*Spoiler Warning*
The last two bosses are recycled from the first two. Not to mention every single boss is way too easy.
Other than the flaws, it's not a bad game. Although the game can be completed in less that 15-20 minutes. That I understand because it's and arcade. But imagine this as a retail for consoles. Now that would suck. But The Funky Fist Fighter can be fun for a while before it starts to get repetitive. If only they can add more stages, new bosses, more bonus stages, a better story, and even include a competitive or co-op link multiplayer, and bring this to the U.S., this would become on of the best arcade games ever. But since that's not the case, it does become a stand-alone decent game.?
Just don't play this all the time because it's going to get old really quickly.
