It would be massively imbalanced. Keep in mind that the trainers and gym leaders are designed around the three starters, with varying difficulties based on the starter you picked. With such a vast pool of Pokemon to choose from, there would be no way to design the game around them, thus leading to one or two starters clearly being a vastly superior choice, and making the game an utter joke.

That would be crazy, but fun and, well ... interesting. I would either chosse at random or choose torchic, turtwig or maybe even larvitar or altaria!!

If I could choose any pokemon that isn't a legend and is base evolution I would choose beldum. Who wouldn't want a partial tank at the start? Helps against training since he takes less damage from most all first finding pokemon but downside is he has to be healed a lot. This would be easier in every game I think since none know moves super effective against steel.

If this could happen then I would definitely choose Absol. The reason being is that he's pretty underrated, is really strong (especially if you use him to get a mass critical rating) and he's my favorite Pokemon.

I think getting to choose any pokemon you want would be open to a lot of abuse. It would be too tempting to just pick an uber-tier pokemon or basically any dragon type. Personally, I would choose Gastly--just because his evolutionary line is one of my favorites. For an interesting challenge, though? I think Ditto as a starter.
