Its Turtle time. In this review I'm going to be critiquing and reviewing Teenage Mutant Turtles.

Story: 7
The Turtles are ninjas that protect the earth from villains. The turtles mostly live in their home in the sewers with their ninja master Splinter. The Turtles have a human friend named April, who is a news reporter. One day the evil Ninja Shredder launches an attack for world domination. In the process he kidnaps April and challenges the Turtles to come and stop him. The Turtles soon discover that defeating Shredder's soldiers and stopping him is not going to be easy. Shredder has surprises and traps in store for the 4 reptiles.

I thought, the plot introduced the characters fairly well. We lean from the plot who the turtles are and who the bad guys are. So TMNT had a good plot to it, but it seems like some things were missing. First of all, this is your typical plot of having a damsel in distress that needs to be rescued. Other games have used that plot to death such as the Mario Series for one. I was really hoping for something more creative. Introducing Shredder was nice as we learn about his character in the plot. Having Shredder want to rule the world was also nicely done. I just wish they would have ventured away from the damsel in distress. But, maybe I have just played Mario too long and have grown tired of that. At the end of the day I give the plot a good 7 out of 10.

 Graphics and Controls: 9
The graphics in this game were awesome for an 8 bit game. To be honest, at times I thought I was playing a 16 bit game. The levels have nice backgrounds that fit their theme. The underwater level looked like it was on 16 bits. In a way the underwater level looked like Donkey Kong's Country for the Super Nintendo. The graphics were just that good in this game. The city levels look like an actual city. The sprites in this game were also awesome. The Turtles look very nice and their moves are done nice too. The enemies in this game look nice as well. If I have a complaint against the graphics it did seem like there was a few lags in the later levels. However, this was very minor.

The controls in this game were very good. All the Turtles have very smooth controls. Even when they do there combo moves. Not one time in the game does the controls feel stiff or sluggish at all. I will even compare to the controls to the Mega Man Series. Yeah they are that good. I give the controls and graphics a good rating of 9 out of 10. Had I not known any better I would have thought this was a 16 bit game and not an 8 bit game.

Sound: 8
The sound in this game is good. The way the Turtle's weapons sound is amazing. The weapons sound like they are doing serious damage. Also the sounds the enemies make when they are being attacked is nice, again letting the player know they are doing damage. The enemies attacks are even nicely done. The music is for the most part good. Some of the tunes have a nice theme. I also like it how the music changes when it is time to battle a boss. The only drawback I have to the sound is the short soundtrack. The soundtrack in this game is good do not get me wrong. But it would have been nice had they had more soundtracks. All the sewer levels have the same sound, and all the city levels have the same sound. I like to hear a variety of music in games. After, a while I kind of get tired of hearing the same tunes over and over again. Still, this game had a good soundtrack so I give it a good rating of 8 out of 10.

Addictiveness and Depth: 8
TMNT is a fun game with good replay value. I have found that this game was for the most part enjoyable to play through. For me personally I like to play the game through with a different Turtle and see how far I can go. I like to play as Leo or Donatello a lot. But you can also use a different turtle for a different stage which adds to the replay value. Now, they are some items to collect such as boomerangs, and other ninja items. You can also collect pizza for health. However the depth in this game is a little bit different. It is not like Mario or Mega Man games were there are tons of items to collect. The game has good depth because you can chose which turtle you want to play as. As I stated you can play through the game with one specific Turtle or you can mix it up. You can even switch turtles if you start running low on health. I give the replay value and depth to TMNT a good score of 8 out of 10

Difficulty: 9
The difficulty for this game was hard for me to rate. TMNT is a difficulty game because the enemy placement in this game just bury you. It is nearly impossible to go through this game without getting hit. Enemies will gang up on you, hit you from behind and even throw things at you. So you can lose health quickly in this game. On the other hand, the difficulty also is determined by which character you play as. Raphael and Michael Angelo are short range fighters. So if you are using those turtles you have to get close to your enemies to do a lot of damage. That can be very challenging and requires a lot of skills to pull off. Leo and Donatello are long range fighters with their weapons so they have an easier time in hitting enemies. Leo and Donatello can hit enemies before they get right in their faces unlike Raphael and Angelo. Still, this game requires skills to pull off and beat. I like games that challenge the player and require skills to master. I give the difficulty a good rating of 9 out of 10.

Overall: 8.7
TMNT came out around 1990 it might have been in 1989 when it came out. I remember my parents getting me this game when I was about 5 years old. I remember playing this game quite a bit when I was younger and I still like to play it to this day. TMNT came out right when the NES was at its peak. This game came out around the time Super Mario Brothers 3 and Mega Man 3 came out, those games proved to be big hits for the NES. TMNT is regarded as another smash hit from the same time frame. It was not surprising this game would be a huge hit due to the graphics, sound and difficulty. As I mentioned earlier in my review this game plays a lot like a 16 bit system. I find that remarkable that the makers of this game were able to provide that feel. This game was also the first game in the TMNT series and it really started the TMNT fanfare. Other Turtle games would come after this one in a few years. In fact, this game is credited to introducing the Turtles to mainstream popularity. After this game came out, TMNT merchandise started to be made and marketed. I guess that shows how popular this game was when it came out.

The negatives I listed are very minor and should not stop players from playing this game. Some players do not have a problem with the bad guy seeking world denomination and causing a damsel to be in distress. After, playing Mario games I kind of got tired of that plot being used again. I would have liked to have seen more creativity. The sound is mostly good accept that they could have added more soundtracks in this game. Other than those negatives this is a great game and should be enjoyable. But I you will be challenged if you play this game, which is not a bad thing. As far as recommending this game goes. I would recommend this game for anybody. It is a very good game and challenges your skills. If anybody is knew to the TMNT then I would recommend this game, because it is the one that started it all. Aside from the few negatives I mentioned you will find this is a fun and good game to play. I give TMNT a good overall rating of 8.70. I hope you take time to enjoy this good game.

Nice job on this r e view man, it is nice and easy to read as well as very organized and detailed which are all the key elements of a professional review. I like how you combined some categories together and talked about each one in great detail, you also do a great job of painting a picture of what the game is like and describing it in depth, I don't think I could ask for anything more in a review.

Overall, an impressive job, well done and I think that this turned out to be a very good quality review and it is exactly because of this that you are a site staff, you deserve it! Keep up the great work man!
