The hardest game i've ever beaten would have to be Rockman 4 Minus Infinity. The stages are packed with high-health enemies that can take off a fourth of your health with one shot, the bosses are insanely powerful and agressive, and the whole game overall feels like the developer strove to see you suffer.

fightorace : A could not agree more. I got that game when I was about 6. Sure, the turbo bike was really hard for a little while. But it took maybe a couple weeks to memorize everything. I feel that level is really easy. The only part that I find remotely challenging is the last segment, but only if I have to do it with a keyboard. On the actual console, it isn't bad. I had no idea that that level was widely regarded as a famously hard level until about 4 years ago. The levels after that are WAY harder. Rat race can be a pain in the butt when you get to the last rat.

I'd have to say Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen was my hardest game that I've beaten. Sure it get's a bit easier as you get stronger and have better gear but encountering the drake or any other mini boss mob for that matter can be nightmarish early on. I remember the first time I played I went straight into the Dark Arisen DLC as a level 8 character and I was absolutely annihilated by the lesser enemies there. Dark Souls or Demons Souls are pretty hard as well but I haven't beaten either one yet. I haven't dedicated the time to playing them.

I think we can all agree that the classics can sometimes be the hardest games ever made, not counting the modern indie games that are designed solely for the purpose of frustrating players.

I have played and beaten many hard games so it is quite hard (see what I did there?) to say which one was the hardest. A few years ago I have beaten Contra without the extra lives codes. A lot of luck and mini-heart attacks were involved.
I have also beaten Captain claw (hint: my profile pic) without cheats which is quite an achievement in my opinion, since that game is hard as hell. Also beaten the first Castlevania in one go with 2 deaths.

Edit: How could I forget dark souls..

I changed my mind... You know VVVVVV? The indy platformer where you reverse gravity instead of jumping? Yeah, that game is frickin' tough to beat. There are a few areas on there that make me squeal. Not squeals of excitement, but squeals of PAIN.

But yeah, there's actually some custom player levels from programmers that... Well, they're made with a level editor, but the levels are made very well, but they're so damn hard that I want to

For me,I would have to say the hardest games I've ever beat (and probably the hardest game to ever exist) are the Touhou games. Nothing really compares to the amount of skill needed to play a Touhou game. When you play Touhou for the very first time, you probably won't even make it to the end (Even on the lowest difficulty). Touhou is a Danmaku (Also known as bullet hell) and there are several games out and the fan base for Touhou is HUGE (chances are you've seen it in one way or another). I have yet to beat one of the games on normal without continues, but I hope I get good enough soon.

Probably the hardest game I have ever beat, and the crown jewel of all my gaming feats, is Zelda II. You know a game is hard when its an NES game that I spent 3 days straight playing. The challenges in the game are excruciatingly difficult, especially the early game trek through Death Mountain. The palaces are difficult, the bosses are cheap sometimes, and even the most basic of enemies can take a toll on you unless you are a gamer ninja on super steroids. Though, to be honest, it was a great game. Even with the occasionaly cheap difficulty, the game was one of the best genuine challenges I've faced in a while.

Other than that, a second would have to be the original Mega Man for the NES (See a pattern, see how they are both NES games? Yeah, new games just aren't as difficult or as fun). A blind run through the game makes you want to rip your hair out, and everything poses a challenge. The platforms in Guts Man's stake, Elec Man, The chasm with the floating platforms in Ice Man's stage, Elec Man... Also, the most unfair thing in the original is having to use the magnet beam in Dr. Wily 1, because the space is so small to use it, you end up messing up and wasting all your energy. The game is just outright painful to play, but it is still fun.

TheFadedWarrior :

Yep, that's mine, too. I was just about to post that. Technically it's not that hard just because it is structured like a modern game; that is, it has checkpoints everywhere and infinite lives. But I still would have to say it's the hardest game I've beaten. I even did Veni Vidi Vici (AKA Doing Things the Hard Way). Not easy, but actually easier than getting the trinket in Edge Games. Now that was an exercise in torture.

Other than that... well, I'm going to disagree with PixelBrick here and say that Ninja Gaiden 1 on NES is rather hard. But that doesn't count in my case because I used restore points.

The hardest game I've ever beaten?
Super Mario Sunshine...
Yes, I am serious. I have beaten so few games, that it really only comes down to three. I have dozens that I'm CLOSE but... my attention span is so short... and with some of them I'm trying to beat them 100% before I finish the final boss for the first time...

Definitely Earthworm Jim, on the PS1. Apart from being straight up freaky at times, Earthworm Jim was tough-as-nails difficult... Yet I beat it as a kid, somehow.

I don't have much trouble with games. Even some games hailed as the 'hardest,' I find relatively easy. Probably because I'm extremely patient and will take two or three hours to find everything on a level. I played Dishonored for the first time last week and beat it in three days on a no kill/no detection run. Dark Souls was the game I bought before that and I'm proud to say that after I got a hang of it I easily finished the game. (Next up is Demon Souls.)

However, my Achilles' Heel comes in the form of Guitar Hero and Dance games... I did eventually 'beat' guitar hero, but only after weeks upon weeks of excruciating mess ups. I still fail anything past easy mode for those.

The hardest game that I had to complete was F-Zero GX. (Story mode) Each chapter was absurdly difficult in their own way and it took a lot out of me after completing each one. Chapter 7 took me three days to finally complete (This was on normal difficulty.) and the last Chapter took even longer. It was really difficult to complete, but I had a blast playing it.

I probably have to go with Ninja Gaiden I, but I love the game so much that I can't remember it being that difficult. If I picked up the game now after so many years I'd surely be as frustrated as I was when trying to beat it for the first time.
I can't say if it's really that difficult if I played it now, but as a 5-year-old Croc for PS1 was hell! There's a photo of me sleeping on the couch with the PS-controller in my hands after crying and raging over the game :-D
