No Vizzed games to play....Toad's Christmas Adventure? A Super Mario Brothers hack? I'll try it...okay, I'm reviewing this hack. Welcome everybody to my review of Toad's Christmas Adventure. This month I will be reviewing festive games. Why not start with a simple game? Toad's Christmas Adventure is basically a hack of the successful Super Mario Brothers released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (1985). I really have no back-story here. But now it's Toad's turn to play along his buddy Mario! Let's see what Toad is in for in this game. This game has very authentic characteristics. Let's look inside.
The story for this game. Well there's changed text of the girl you're saving, but honestly, you could change the character and the villain and there wouldn't even be a freaking difference. This game might as well be a mushroom saving another mushroom from the clutches of the evil twin of a gargantuan-sized turtle. Basically, it's Toad's job to save his SISTER Toadette. Sisters? I thought they were one of Nintendo's couples. Anyways, remember Toadette? Neither do I. She was in Mario Kart Wii and Mario Party 8 and 9, but that's pretty much it. Bowser's evil twin, yes...BOWSER'S EVIL TWIN kidnaps Toadette leaving Toad to rescue her. Now wait a minute. Can't Bowser's evil twin just kidnap Princess Peach leaving Mario on a wild goose chase to kill BOWSER? Then for once, Bowser would succeed. But then the Bowser brothers would fight over Peach, but anyways, after Toad goes through all the levels, Toadette acknowledges that they're siblings and Bowser's evil twin did all the work and Bowser did nothing. Unlike Toadette, Princess Peach, the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom has witchcraft powers. Mario and Luigi Bowser's Inside Story (2011) and New Super Mario Bros Wii (2009) both for the give this away. Peach could have used these powers to stop Bowser, but Toadette has no supernatural powers, so let's not blame her for getting kidnapped. As you can see, this story is no different than your average Mario story line. Therefore, I'm rating the story a 5/10. It sure has gotten a little boost, but not much really. Let's move on to the next category.
Depth: 4/10
This game offers little. If I'm going to rate Legend of Zelda's depth a 6/10, then this should be very low considering Legend of Zelda is longer than Super Mario Brothers, but still really short. Now, there's 32 levels just like the original Super Mario Bros, but these levels are REALLY short. It's really easy to speed run this game. I'm not even kidding. There's no warps in this game, but it shouldn't take you more than 30 minutes to complete this entire game. Each of the eight worlds sport four levels. The fourth level of each world are castle's of the evil Bowser twin's clones. Castles are the deadliest levels, but like I said, this game is very forgiving with items, extra lives, enemy placement, and how long the levels are. This game steals textures from other Mario games like Mario 2. But sadly I can't pick up a Shy Guy and chuck it at a Flurry just like Mario 2 (Nintendo of America, 1988). This game obviously has the original power-ups. The mushroom and the 1-up variant which are completely identical, the star, and the fire-flower..which...actually isn't too useful in this game. I mean, Toad throws snowballs as fireballs, and Toad has a REALLY bad aim. The fireballs always go in random directions. You're better off using just a plain old Mushroom. And I should add unlike in modern Mario games, when you got hit when you're Fire Mario in games like Mario 1, Mario 2, Mario 3, and Mario World, you're getting your rear sent back to plain old Mario. Super Mario is the form of Mario with a mushroom by the way. In this game don't get fooled by Toad. He looks tall, but Super Toad is a blue variant of Toad. Then your sloppy snowball ammo makes Toad turn...purple. Well how does Toad turn purple when holding snow? I know it's to verify you're no longer Super Tod, but kinda distracting. This hack really helps distinguish the Christmas feeling. Even the music makes you feel like you're playing a festive game. More on that later in graphics and sound. There are no new enemies in this hack, no new mechanics, none of that. The second quest the Princess gives you from the original game is back in action, but in the original game, the second quest was where koopas turned into Buzzy Beetles, which are not weak to the Fire Flower. But in the second quest, you get a world select...that's nice. In this game you only start with one life which is find by me. This hack is way too easy anyways. Well, let's jump to the next category, which is the best..difficulty.
I'm rating the difficulty a 5/10. Like I said, this game is incredibly short. Short levels, fair enemy placement, this item rewards you with TOO MANY power-ups, and this game is easy to speed run because of its coherent design. This game certainly is easier than the original Super Mario Bros, I can say that. You start off with one life, but it shouldn't take you long to get up to ten lives in this game. Like I said, this game is very rewarding because of the many power-ups. I'd like to see somebody speed run this game. It's very easy to do. And this game gives you a lot of time, even though the time limit you got in the original game is cut short. This game flips challenges. The first level isn't a walk-in-the-park by all mines, then the second level and so forth is a complete joke. 32 levels may seem like a lot, but really it didn't take me long to get through the game to get the chance to finally review this hack. I know many will disagree with me, but you have to admit after the original Super Mario Bros, this is a breeze.
Overall, this game is an 8/10. The hacker did a really good job constructing this game. T = T N squared. (Toad = Top Notch Hack) There's decent difficulty, after dealing with Super Mario Brothers, good graphics, the game is very addicting because of its speed run difficulty, and the story certainly is a little better than past incarnations. I don't see anything wrong with this hack. This game isn't 10/10 worthy, but this is still an amazing hack never the less.
This game has good graphics, enough said. 8/10 in my book. Now many textures are taken from games like the first game, the second game, and the second game. Taking textures from both USA AND JAPANESE sequels? This guy has some nerve. A lot of enemies are from Mario 2, but they don't work like Mario 2. In this game, there's Mushroom Blocks, Shy Guys, which are Koopas, Tryclyde snakes as piranha plants, Flurrys are Goombas...and I don't even know what Hammer Brothers are supposed to be. They look like the Grinch, frankly. Ice blocks taken from Mario 2 (USA) and the texture for Toad is taken from Mario 3. The ground is from Mario 2 (Nintendo of Japan, 1986), and snow is from either Mario 3 or Mario 2. It's great that this guy can put these textures in and turn them into an amazing hack. And otherwise, the graphics are the same as the original game.
This game has a new 9/10 soundtrack. The main theme distinguishes the festivity of this game. It's hard to describe. You'll have to hear it to believe it. The death theme is basically just the original death theme with a few tweaks, and the game over theme is the same. The castle theme is also hard to explain. The sound of this game is a little hard to explain and there is little changes, but I still enjoy the sound of this game. I remember how my mother loved the sound of the original game...
THIS GAME IS VERY ADDICTING, 8/10, AND IT'S YOURS HERE ON VIZZED. This game's difficulty and the level design AND graphics make this game very addicting. With the formula of the early Mario games, this game is amazing. It's like playing Mario 1, Mario 2, Mario 3, Mario World, and a whole new Christmas game all in one neat little package. This is definitely my favorite hack of Super Mario Brothers for the NES. And you'll enjoy it too. I don't think this game would be as addicting if it wasn't so easy to speed run, but maybe that's just me. You'll have to try this game for yourselves... |
