So... acting! Have you done it? How did you get started acting? What kinds of roles have you had? What are your favorite types of roles to play? Favorite warm-up games? Does your acting group have crazy pre-show traditions? Or are you a tech crew person, or maybe a costume or props god/goddess? Have you taken classes? Or whatever else you want to say! Go crazy! (As if that's a problem for an actor...)
I started acting in third grade, when I played Moonglow the mermaid in my school's production or Peter Pan. I have been in my school productions ever since, and some out of school stuff. I have just always loved the spotlight, I guess. I've always been a bit of a ham onstage, (except, of course, for those awful auditions!), which is funny because I'm so shy in real life! Some of my favorite roles I've played were this fat evil guy in Lucky Dollar Private Eye, (being evil is awesome!), this interesting guy who dressed as a girl so he wouldn't be thrown overboard by pirates in The Lady Pirates of Captain Bree (I've played a lot of male roles, lol!), and "Narrator 1" in my one act, Ten Reasons Not To Be In A Play, in which I actually played a lot of things, due to the nature of the one act which had the five actors continually switch characters. (My profile pic used to be me in that play, drawn by a fellow actress.) We have lots of weird pre-shows for sure! I don't really know if I want to list those, though! XD I really like playing whoosh ball, wax museum, and freeze improv for warm-ups. How about you people? I did some acting in high school, but quickly learned that it was not my thing. It takes a lot of discipline I lack so I did not take it further. What I acted in back then were in some plays and some really small bit parts in some television stuff. You know "the kid on the bus" or some such thing. And don't get me wrong. I love the theater, I love the art of acting but to be honest, I would never have been good or disciplined enough to be a real actor. Well, I haven't been totally out of it. Next year some stupid sci-fi series is going to premier on local tv where I play "thug at the police station #3". Ha ha! Well, I haven't been totally out of it. I believe I started acting somewhere around Grade 5? Anyway, my first play I did get a speaking role. It wasn't alot of lines, but I had a poem to memorize which had me nervous, but I did just fine and had a ton of fun, not to mention I knew the director personally. After that, my good friend the director set up a little acting camp where we did all sorts of Drama games, like 'Sorry Honey, but you just can't make me laugh' and 'The Alphabet Game'. Then I squirmed into another play around grade 7 or 8 where I had the role of the mother in 'Hansel and Gretel' and enjoyed it immensely, under the same director, yet again. Sadly, that was the last play she ever did work on before she died. Now that I have a love of acting and a way to remember my old friend I'm now in Drama class where we're working on a little one act play called 'The Ever After' which is basically a fairy-tale talkshow. I only play a minor role as an advertiser, but I understand since the senior students deserve the bigger roles, and we got to create our own advertisement anyway, which was TONS of fun! Now that I have a love of acting and a way to remember my old friend I'm now in Drama class where we're working on a little one act play called 'The Ever After' which is basically a fairy-tale talkshow. I was in a couple plays in Elementary School. A Peter Pan and I don't remember what the other two were. In high school I auditioned for the High School Play and I got a small part and I wanted a bigger role so I quit the play which I regret strongly. I would like to do some more acting someday. |

Gamin'Gal : It sounds like you've had some fun roles! I also think sometimes the small parts are the best because you can work on being in character even when the focus is elsewhere and you get more time to bond with the other actors.
I've played "Honey if you love me"! It's a really fun game, but I've played it both with sweet little third graders at Girl Scout Camp and the crazy high school actors at my school, so it's, uh, obviously very different how it plays out with the two types of groups! XD Is the "Alphabet Game" you're referring to that improv one? I think that's the only Alphabet Game that I know. But anyway, the advertiser role you have sounds really fun! You could definitely be creative with that! And yeah, the seniors usually do get the best roles... Of course, they usually do deserve them, what with their experience, and the fact that it's their last year, but it's still hard to get a big part when you're an underclassman. Also, I'm really sorry about your director! That's so sad!

PokefanKala : I've definitely had a lot of fun with my roles! As my old friend's son says, 'Every role is important!' I know people say 'The show must go on' but I think that all roles are important enough that it's EXTREMELY hard to go on without them. Oh goodness I can easily inagine how different the game can be with such a huge age gap between groups. The high school ones must be, uh, interesting, to say the least. I'm talking about the improv one where every sentence has to start with the next letter in the alphabet so, 'Ack! I'm so nervous about the presentation today!' 'But why? You aren't even presenting' 'Cartwheels are hard to talk about though!' and so on and so forth. The nice thing was that the whole reason we got to create a new ad was so one of the other advertisers and I could get more lines. Yeah, I still miss her a lot, but every time I visit my old neighbour I sit in the old rocking chair and recall all the stories she used to tell me. I still got to say good bye to her in my own way, at least. I wrote a letter and they read it to her while she was in a coma. I like to think that she heard it... I had an acting class once in middle school It was SO fun! But I don't think I was very good at it. xD

I have been performing for basically all of my life (Ok, really since about second grade, but playing pretend counts, right?). Throughout middle and high school I was involved in a community Theatre troupe and held numerous roles (Mainly in musicals, my major in college is musical theatre.  ). I would have to say in high school, my favorite role was either Edna(the mom) in Hairspray (I was the first in the state of Mississippi to play the role), Jack in Into The Woods (I dyed my hair just for the role. As natural ginger as it could get.), or Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat. I have had my fair share of roles in straight plays as well. But, now that I'm in college my love for performing (Dancing and singing also included) has just bloomed into something I had never imagined. I know this is what I want to do with the rest of my life. I have been in all four main-stage productions I have auditioned for [Me being only a Sophomore, it's a big deal and the shows are : Henry V, The Drunkard(Musical), Ice Island : The Wait For Shackleton (met the playwright and this show is based on a true life event) and currently, Curtains(Musical). I have had a lead in each of these productions.] Now, I (out of my 10+ years of doing this) have finally gotten my first romantic lead in the musical, Curtains, in which I play Aaron Fox the composer. I am usually cast in those "weird" or "comic relief" roles, which is fantastic, but I have never been fully able to use my talents in a more natural, kind of way. I am excited to show everyone that I can play desperately in love with my wife (from which I am separated.) I love talking to other actors and hearing their stories. If this is what you want to do with the rest of your life, just let me leave you with one words of advice. Most people say acting is reacting? Well, that's wrong. Acting is portraying real life and exposing the truths about our everyday world, even in different circumstances. Performing is something that takes hard work, discipline, and tons of dedication. It's literally survival of the fittest out there.  Break a leg in any future performances to you or any other actor out there! PM me f you want to know anything else. I was in quite a few plays and musicals when I was younger. It was the best time of my life. I would have loved to done that forever but I chose a different path instead. I truly miss that feeling - the rush. Just thinking about being on stage gives me an exhilaration that I couldn't possibly put into words. PokefanKala, Gamin'Gal, tybeauxsboy - I'm sure that you know the feeling that I'm talking about... It's been too long ago for me to remember the specific warm-up games but I always enjoyed improvisation. As a matter of fact, Kansas used to have Improvised Duet Act as an event in their Forensics competition. My friend and I took 1st at State in that category. Unfortunately, IDA is not included in National competition. I also won 2nd place at State in Dramatic Interpretation or DI but that wasn't good enough to make Nationals, either. I don't really act like in plays and stuff but I do act like in group projects . I like Acting and if I don't get to be a Zoologist then I'll see what I can do with acting . I act A LOT when I am alone .... Use different voices and of course movements . I walk differently and talk differently. |
